It depends where you live, they have been doing a "one month trial" (it has been around 3 now though so I guess it is good) in Melbourne and Sydney and I can tell you, it looks so much nicer than 576p they had here. It is running at a low bitrate but even still, it looks incredible.

They did have it at the full 1920x1080i for a while but it is now back to the more watchable 1440x1080i and is working very well. They also have a few shows (Lost, Heroes, Ugly Betty, What About Brian?, etc.) in 5.1 as well so it is better than the other stations in that regard.

I posted a few caps at another forum of PotC from the other day, I will put the link below to these to show how much better it looks compared to the alternative.

Shark Tale

Pirates of the Caribbean

Some other Seven HD 1080i captures

24
Heroes
My Name is Earl
Prison Break
The Great Outdoors
Eurotrip

As you can see, 576p is dead in the water as expected when compared to 1080i.

Oh thank fucking god.

Fuck Alston for allowing companies to use 576p as "HD".

I'd much prefer 720p over 1080i but 1080i is a billion times better than 576p.

Soooo I went nuts buying some Blu-Ray movies last night... I got:

- Planet Earth (4 disc BBC doco all shot in 1080p)
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
- Letters from Iwo Jima

And in non-HD purchases
- Arrested Development Season 2 and 3

Pretty sweet haul all up :)

So my 360 is the UK model and won't play most of my DVDs.
so I thought i'd try the HD-DVD player (originally purchased from playasia) and they work.
I have no idea why.

360's a piece of junk quality wise?

Or is it some sort of region thing?

the HD-DVD add-on is just the drive yeah? and the 360 handles the rest?
so I don't know why that would change anything.

i'll try my R1 T2 later on.

Looks like Blockbuster is going with Blu-Ray for its full HD rollout...

Hope that one format dies, and soon, so we can stop all this bullshit.

Anyone who lives in 50Hz land should be praying that Blu-Ray wins the war. 25p masters are fucked up.

Looks like some Blu-ray discs are developing a problem whats being called..

BLU-RAY Disc rot.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=857067" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Numerous reports are circulating over at the AVS forums that a problem with the coating of some Blu-ray discs (now being described as "disc rot"), which produces mould-like spots, have now made Blu-ray discs unplayable for several owners. The reports have now morphed into a five page thread, with many forum members discovering spots/marks which can't be cleaned or rubbed off on Blu-ray versions of The Prestige
EDIT: More than likely just a few bad pressings!

Yeah this isn't a hi def debate topic, we've had a few of those.

Recently I've seen the first Pirates movie on BRD and it was superb, really great transfer and fucking fantastic film, not having seen it in a while I kind of forgot just how hilarious Jack and Barbosa are in this one. 9 undead monkeys out of 10.

But the real treat that I've been watching is PLANET EARTH, this is so absolutely incredible it's probably the single best use of hi def I've seen thus far, the colours and the detail are just astoundingly beutiful and the actual content is really good too - One of the best nature docos I've ever seen.

I cannot reccomend it highly enough to anyone with a HD DVD or BRD player, it was on sale at Amazon when I bought it for about 60 USD but I don't know who has it cheapest now.. GO BUY IT PEOPLE, I can pretty much garauntee that if you arn't half blind you will be blown away.

Just incredible.

The vocal minority are the only ones that care about hd movies. It still amazes me how dead hd formats are in this country and in the us for that matter.

If 5 people on AVS who may or may not be telling the truth are 3-5% of the blu ray buyers out there then the BRD group has much bigger problems than possible disc rot.

Never seen this posted about on ANY other forum, and all my discs are fine (both HD DVDs and BRDs)

Most likely QA screwed up for a day at the pressing plant.

DVD didn't exactly take off at lightning speed in this country either and you didn't need a new TV to enjoy them, prices will go down HD TV penetration will go up and people will want HD content.

That's my theory anyway.

Actually, Megaman. HD-DVDs can either be 60Hz or 50Hz versions. 60Hz versions use a 24fps master with an optional 3:2 pulldown and 50Hz versions use a 25fps master that's frame doubled.

Hahaha I was just coming in here to post about both these movies! Planet earth is AWESOME. I got it for USD$67 + shipping from Amazon, so anything less than that's a bargain... looks fantastic, and it's a really interesting doco too. So great.

Pirates of the Caribbean looks awesome too.

Got Letters From Iwo Jima as well, haven't put it in the PS3 yet though...

How much have you seen Mech? I just finished the first disc and I'm sooooooooo impressed.

Some stuff they have captured just floors me to be honest, like doing the fade between seasons or when they showed the great white shark leaping out of the water (And my god how crazy is that, 1 single second for all of that action is just insane.. Never going in the ocean again!).

I challenge the high def doubters on this forum to see Planet Earth running on a nice 1080p set and tell me we don't need a new format :P

Just the first episode. And how good was the shark!!!!!!! I bought the series off Garnett saying how great it was on 1UP Yours, I didn't know anything about it, but I've just been blown away, it's just fantastic. Tons better than March of the Penguins too, just so much stuff, how the hell did they film it?!

The only problem is it's really showing up a few issues with my CRT, principle of which, a terrible flickering problem that it sometimes has. It's driving me crazy, maybe it's time to upgrade to a 46" LCD :P

But yeah, it's weird, because the flickering is a lot less noticable on other things.

BTW - <3 David Attenborough, really well spoken and smart guy... I love this quote from him about religion:
My response is that when Creationists talk about God creating every individual species as a separate act, they always instance hummingbirds, or orchids, sunflowers and beautiful things. But I tend to think instead of a parasitic worm that is boring through the eye of a boy sitting on the bank of a river in West Africa, [a worm] that's going to make him blind. And , 'Are you telling me that the God you believe in, who you also say is an all-merciful God, who cares for each one of us individually, are you saying that God created this worm that can live in no other way than in an innocent child's eyeball? Because that doesn't seem to me to coincide with a God who's full of mercy.
