questions regarding eBay

I know nothing about ebay but I am wanting to possibly buy something from it. My questions are in regards to payment of items.

Let's just say I have set up an account...

If I click on the buy it now option and they have paypal... how does that work? Is it an ordinary CC payment or do I have to setup sound kind of account with paypal or what? Payment methods have always confused me on eBay and this is why I have avoided it for this many years. I know it can't be all that hard as old women use it... and they don't understand the internets.

Any help would be appreicated.

Paypal can be set up directly for your credit card, or you can link it to your bank account. I've made quite a few payments by both methods and havent had any troubles yet.

yeah you need to set up an account at paypal, it's easy though.

it's just a middleman, it takes the money from your CC and passes it on to the seller, he then put the money into his bank account.
it's a fast/easy way to pay international sellers.

plus it's linked with ebay so it'll tak you to paypal.com and all you have to do is enter your password and his the pay button.

So, it isn't like an account I have to top up? I just hit the pay button and enter my CC details or is it already stored there?

No once your CC is on paypal, the details are there until you otherwise remove it. You just hit pay, then it automatically takes you to your paypal login screen where you vericate all details and thats that.

just set up an account first, add those details then.

The pay pal account will be based off/linked to your credit card account, so if you make a payment and there is no money in your paypal account it will be debited off your credit card.

It's kind of funny how many people are scared of eBay, including a lot of the programmers in my office (who should be the nerdiest of the nerd), given I know a LOT of non-nerds (a lot who are quite older and/or women) who use it and love it.

But anyway Greywizzard, was it really that hard to go to PayPal's website and read up on it there?

Paypal rocks. And each auction lists what payment methods are available - like bank transfer, etc, if you don't have paypal.

I don't like PayPal. Someone hacked my Ebay account ages ago and the PayPal account was directly linked to it... they were able to use my parents credit card by hacking into our Ebay account. So i avoid using it now. One bad experience turned me off it altogether.

We got the money back off the CC company. But still, makes me feel uneasy.

Wel they must have hacked that too. But i dont recall ever having entered one there anyway. My eBay account was hacked... and the PayPal account was associated with it. Spent around $600 on it before we found out... with a few auctions won that hadn't been paid for yet. Obviously ruined our feedback and all when payments etc. got reversed and we didn't pay the auctions we won.

To PayPals credit... they reversed and stopped payment on things without us asking. It noticed weird activity and disabled the account.

They need your PalPal account password, like Jizz said.

Also all credit card transactions are insured so stop being such pansies

Fucked if i know. I just know it happened. Either someone guessed the password (doubt it, wasn't really straightforward). Someone had access to passwords. Or it was hacked.

When i bought stuff of eBay with PayPal, i don't recall having to use a password other then my eBay account password. That was ages ago though. So it could've changed or i could just be forgetting.

And insured or not. It's too much fucking around

I want to sell shit on eBay but don't have a credit card to do so. My shitty Commonwealth account doesn't have Internet Banking and i'm too lazy to do what it requires to enable it(or even look up how i do that)

Doesn't sound like it was hacked, sounds like someone got access to your passwords.

I've never had a problem with my money online... ever. Been ebaying and netbanking and whatnot for a good 8 years or so now...

I did use eBay a fair bit... that turned me off it a bit. I've stuck to direct debit since... or direct credit card transactions. I wouldn't mind getting my keycard setup for online use... i have to borrow my parents credit card when i spend money. That sux.

Like i want to pick up Kickboxer of cdwow.. but i have to use my parents credit card for it

I use deliberately different email addresses and passwords for Ebay and Paypal and have had no problem with any fraud. In fact, my Paypal password is different to any other password I have anywhere. An added benefit is when you get those Paypal spams, you know straight away what it is.

In short: Paypal is good for buyers, convenient but annoying for sellers.

I've used ebay hundreds of times. Direct deposit is what I've always done as a buyer and a seller as I find it the easiest, 'most manual' way. Something seems low-risk about just walking into a bank(u dont even have to have an account with) with some cash. You see it all happen in front of you and there's no dodgy internet folk.
As long as you pass any bank in your day to day journey its by far the best way to use ebay. After all the money is in their account instantly and being cash it is limited to the ammount in your pocket - can't be accessed by some guy on the net who never got laid in highschool.

it isn't an option when buying from international selelers though, PAYPAL is by far the best way to go in that scenario.
