Yeah, bit of a let down. Gal looks great as usual but the story was pretty balls.

Dumb and Dumber To
hahahahaha.
Holy shit, this film has some piss funny moments.
I can only vaguely remember when it came out, but the reception was pretty bad I think?
Not sure why. It's not quite as good as the original, but still pretty damn good. Like I say, it's fucking hilarious at times.

Godzilla vs Kong

Good, stupid, fun. The opening and closing scenes of this movie are some of the funniest shit I've seen on the big screen, the music choices were incredible. It really didn't need the side story with the annoying kids and the bumbling idiot podcaster, and the token "hacking" scene was predictably awful, but overall it didn't make the mistake of focusing too much on the humans at the expense of kaiju action. It was a shame Lance Reddick only got one line, it would have been nice to see him in a bigger role. Much more enjoyable than I was expecting, I think I might give Skull Island and whatever the other one in between was a go.

Tricky to score, I guess it's an 8/10 if you enjoy dumb shit, probably a 5 or 6 if you prefer your movies to make sense.

Skull Island is really good, saw it on the big screen and bought it on Blu Ray as well, seen it about 3 times so far. Make sure you got a good home system, the chopper scene when they first approach the island is epic.

Mortal Kombat

Started great, but rapidly went downhill. The only characters I have a shit about were Sonya and Kano since the casting was pretty lame otherwise. Shang Tsung's in particular was awful. Completely lacking in any form of gravitas, the dude doesn't even rank as a cut-price extra in a Bruce Lee film.

Having said that, it was the right move to focus on the Scorpion/Sub-Zero story, instead of jacking off to the Liu Kang mythos that the games and previous films do. Their storyline is much more interesting than the others.

The fights were mostly great, and there was more than enough blood to justify being called Mortal Kombat. The acting was passable, the direction was nonsensical, and Goro didn't have anywhere near enough screentime.

Was it enjoyable though?

Heck yeah it was. Seven dirty harpoons out of ten.

New Sonya < Veronica Vaughn

Agreed that it's definitely a fun watch (I'm probably going to see it again at the cinema), but not exactly a great film. Kano was funny as all fuck, the fighting was good, and the modernised theme song is pretty decent. Kabal was the weakest part of the equation IMO, he sounded like a huge dickhead. All of the direct references to lines in the game ("flawless victory", etc) were super cringey but hey, it's a MK movie. Sets up decently enough for them to shit out a few more, which I am down for.

Much the same premise as the original movie IIRC, Outworld is one tournament win away from enslaving Earth Realm forever. It's more or less a retelling of everyone's origin story, they don't stray far from what's established in the early games, but like Unfnk said there's less focus on Liu Kang and more on the Scorpion/Sub-Zero rivalry. I've only put significant time into MK1-3 too, and there were only two characters that I had no idea who they were. Just looked them up and one debuted in MK4 (so you'll probably recognise them), while the other was in a bunch of the spin-off titles then eventually in MK11. Neither have a particularly large role in the story or get much screen time anyway, so you'll be good to go.

I don't think they could have given us a less interesting main character if they'd tried.

I do look forward to the inevitable sequels though. Hopefully they recast Shang Tsung, or have the guy playing him attend some acting classes at least. And give Kintaro more screen time than Goro had. It wouldn't be hard.

Godzilla Vs Kong

The battle scenes were great, as was some of the cinematography (is that the viewing angles etc?), computer graphics have just come so far. But honestly, they could've cut 30 mins of the story away and made the film 90mins instead and I'd have enjoyed it more. As it stands, I couldn't wait for it to finish. Cinema was empty too for school holidays and 330pm, literally 5 people including myself and my son. Skull Island shits over this, my son said the same except without cursing.

I haven't seen it yet, but those big monster films have declined very sharply, haven't they? Godzilla was ace, but then the studio seems to have gotten the franchise dollars in their eyes and have started pumping them out like Avengers films...

Godzilla vs Kong.

I'm pretty sure I saw GameHED listed as the head writer.
I'm probably missing something by not watching it at a cinema, but at the same time, I'm glad I didn't spend money on it.

5/10, and that's only because the CGI was top notch, and I'm feeling especially generous.

Best movies I've seen lately are Boss Level and Nobody. Both huge amounts of fun and no woke bullshit going on.

Enjoyed both Godzilla v Kong and MK. Stories weren't that great but fun to watch.

Have watched others. Can't even remember them so probably weren't that good.

Army of the Dead.
Sigh. I could literally write pages and pages of what is wrong here, but I can't be bothered.
And the frustrating thing is that there are elements here that could have made a deadset fucking classic.
Absolute trash.

Went in expecting that this would be fairly decent. Ryan Reynolds in a video game action setting; that's a pretty safe bet.

Then was pleasantly surprised that it was even better. Or pleasantly surprised that it just didn't drop the ball and kept the fun going for 2 hours. Had some big funny moments near the end too, which I loved. It was a Tuesday morning so we had a really light crowd (like 10 other people), but I'm pretty sure that had the cinema been full there would have been laughs and cheering for at least one particular bit.

Totally enjoyed it and better than expected; consistent quality and fun basically. I wasn't planning to watch this on the big screen but very glad I did.

Maybe it's just light video gamey guff but this gets a 9/10 from me.

This. Right down to watching it on a Tuesday

It's a Ryan Reynolds movie so if you don't like him you probably won't like it, but I enjoyed it a lot.

BOSS LEVEL

Good, I liked it.
The line - "I am Guan Yin. And Guan Yin has done this" will always be one of the best lines in a dumb action film - ever.

Dune (2021).

Imagine, if you will, the novel Dune. Now imagine that Denis Villeneuve directed a film adaptation of maybe the first half of it or so. That's it, that's all you need to know.

An interesting take on the "video game characters living their own lives when the players aren't looking trope". I'd go as far as to say it's the best videogame film we've had yet, if it weren't almost completely let down by the secondary story of the boy getting the girl because he coded a character in the hands to basically be himself. That bit was dreadfully lame and I don't think it really added anything to the film. It could have been handled much more imaginatively, but I guess cheesy is what Ryan Reynolds is known for.

It's still a pretty alright film.

It was my third attempt before I watched the whole thing in its entirety. The Blu-ray/UHD comes with 3 shorts that ties in with the movie really well, especially the Batista one. Also, the Dolby Atmos in the movie it outstanding, one of the few movies that pops up regularly when home cinema buffs ask what to impress others for sound.

I can't get a surround sound setup in my current place, but if there's anything that anyone should know about Villeneuve films, is that they've always got amazing sound design.
