Yeah I like Blomkamps style, didn't realize it was his work till the end credits but made sense. Also a pleasant surprise to see Sigourney Weaver play a part too.

Spiderman: Homecoming

Early free screening again yo :D

For a general opinion with no plot points:
Probably the best summary is "Not as epic as several other Marvel movies, but still good". And I imagine that was a deliberate strategy. Not mind-blowing, but satisfyingly not-annoying in really any way. Stable.

I'd give it 80%.

More blurb, slightly more spoily:
I honestly think Garfield was more enjoyable to watch than Holland, but at the same time felt that Holland (and the plot) does the acting like a kid much better. Clumsy moments are scattered around, he's a bit unsure and desperate, and a bit boyish in that he reacts in his own interests more than the good of the people and wotnot. There's definitely more of a "young boy finds awesome stuff" vibe in this one, and he never really just gets up and kicks arse; it's a slightly desperate struggle all the way. So that's all pretty ok, I thought.

To be honest the plot isn't terrible, but also isn't memorable. I've pretty much forgotten it. Pretty much every cool sequence you've seen in the trailers is just one of many good looking scenes. A lot of enjoyable stuff happens, and there's really nothing wrong with any of it, but the drama is honestly pretty low-key. There is really just not a lot of epic going on. The boat scene, with Iron Man saving the day, is possibly as high as the hype gets.

Spidey wants to join the Avengers, stuff happens which coincidentally involves a very conveniently located bad guy. I did like how they didn't muck around with weird mutations and creatures, however the villain still felt pretty generic to me. That wasn't a terrible thing, just a thing. (And maybe he's a known comic character, I don't know.)

Oh and that money-shot in the trailers with Spidey and Iron Man swinging/flying together, that doesn't happen.

Keaton looked derp at the very, very beginning, but soon became decent in his role.

I found the boat part -- the part we've all seen in the trailers -- the only distractingly wrongish thing. The boat was plain in 2 pieces; it's not like you can just pull half a boat sideways and it won't sink. So pretty weird to use as one of the main spectacles. But really, that's about the only actual complaint I could make.

I'll just say watch to the very end. Watch past all of the credits, not just the pretty credits. I don't think saying that is a spoiler, everyone should already know it. And yet, so many people left the cinema early.

Because oh man that was easily the funniest part of the whole film, by far. I laughed out loud and suddenly, where I was going to walk away satisfied and content, was now walking away wishing there were more. It was lolz.

NFI how people are saying Wonder Woman was good. Many of the effects are really poor. Now I get why, in the Justice League trailer, some of the effects look cheap. They are cheap.

The plot, also cheap. It's just unimportant and dull; there's a lot of dialogue that I just wanted to be over and didn't seem to matter, and yet the action is so sparse at the same time. I think of Batman Begins, where very close to a full hour passes before we even see the batsuit, but it works just fine because we're hooked on Wayne growing up. Wonder Woman, barring the montage-y opening, takes even longer to get to some action. A solid 70+ minutes of not genuinely wanting to spend time on her actual character, mixed with no-one-cares rambling about Ares.

The villains are utterly forgettable.

And the bullet time. Bullet time every 3 minutes. So much bullet time. After watching it I wonder how can any director ever use bullet time again without feeling stupid.

I wasn't trying to be cynical; I had heard good things and stayed patient for as long as I could. But damn.

Gal Gadot and Chris Pine were fine. Gadot is excellent in the role. Sexy as, and just great to watch imo.

But I really think WW was a case of expectations being so lowered that people thought it was good. Or simply because Gal Gadot is so good to look at.

WW was indeed terribly mediocre. You should go watch Baby Driver instead.

Seeing Spider-Man tonight.

I thought the first half of WW was more than good enough, the second half was yet another DC-style second-rate attempt at Dragon Ball.

Nothing they've done since The Watchmen has come even close to being as good.

Split

M Night Shamylan seems back on form with this film. Story of a guy with multiple personalities that kidnaps 3 girls, but which personality will let them out? Great performance by the lead who I'd never heard of. Won't say anymore but it's a great thriller/horror worth watching. Right up there with Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

8.5 personalities out of 10

Only unspoil this if you've seen it.
Spoiler!
It's set in the same universe as another movie which the end cameo will give away.
This also leads to a sequel to that movie and this movie.

Wonder Woman was ok but not as good as Spidey.

If you have a choice between the two, go for Spiderman. WW suffers the same problem as Iron Man 1 where the villain seems too weak compared to the hero and you don't respect them enough to be truly excited to see the fight.
Spoiler!
But the overall way he manipulates men to fight without him getting his own hands dirty is a good concept. It fits in well with the idea that there are no good guys just pupets being used by their own ambitioins to control others. It's not as flashy but it fits the dark gritty universe DC wants to push over the cartoony one
Listen to Angry Joe and watch the animated movie.

Rakka looks bloody good. Sort of has that Edge of Tomorrow look which was based on manga. I think it has the right things people miss from old 80s sci-fi horror movies: violent aliens, humans with underpowered weapons, the feeling of doom and despair, and imperfect characters (which the Battlestar Galctica tv series reboot did well - imperfect people can get into conflict with each other and have fights which makes the monster seem less like the bad guy and more like the opportunist with the main bad guy being the humans that betray each other. ie there is as much internal fighting amoung humans as human on alien fighting)

Although seeing black goo again is kinda tired since alien franchise is doing that shit these days. Man this should be a Halo tv show.

Saw Dunkirk

4 out of 5 stars for me.

The feeling of tensian as the bombers would come at the vulnerable soldiers was like the sense of doom of past viet nam war movies. Only the focus seems to be on fighters attacking the less agile planes in time to save lives. I don't think of this as a war movie/documentary but more like a rescue story. This is what older star wars movies (and rogue one which copied the best stuff from old star wars) felt like whenever you watch battles and can see the danger that exists in scenes and not just some saturday morning cartoon version like in the Force Awakens where the pilot is an overpowered 2D cardboard cutout.

The movie is just the right length and the begining gets straight into the exciting/scary bit and moves from that point on. (sort of like the second lord of the ring movie - no introductions or bullshit just fights)

The good thing about these war films is they are free of feminist shit. It shows the dangers men have to go through to defend their nations/family/property from others and the vulnerability of ordinary people. And without the usual glorification of killing people, but a respect for combat and skill necessary to be good at things. (even the skilled pilot must know the limits of technology; the fuel capacity, the time to take to reach target, the other enemies who are trying to do to you what you do to them etc and the movie shows this danger as people work within limits like how many people can you ship off the island in time, the lack of any easy lock on and having to anticpate the movements of the other plane so you cna line up a shot)

Today there is virtually no danger as pilots just shoot at each other from long distance with guided missiles, and today with drones you don't even have to be in the combat zone and can kill with little risk to yourself. No wonder people want to play Call of Duty set in WWII again: the soldiers were a lot more macho as the machines were shittier in the old days and required more skill. If there is ever a Top Gun sequel it will probably be boring to watch as people don't dogfight at close range like older pilots did. (unless it's an anime adaptation of dogfighting ie like Macross with dozens of acrobatic dodges of laser fire and micromissile swarm which doesn't exist in the real world heh)

The Spitfire is the hero of the story. This is secretly a mech show. If the VF-1 is the star of SDF: Macross which turned the tide of the war against the giant aliens in Space War I, then the spitfire is the star mech of WWII which saved lives for being the best plane.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/z3jkwmn" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Nobody really cares about the dying humans they just want to see the Spitfire kicking butt. lol If you like mech shows like Gundam and Macross, this is the movie equivalent of one.

Mr.Plinkett's review of Ghostbuster 2016:
the key to good humour is the timing. Please listen hollywood people. Just because you think the only people that didn't like it are just anti-feminists, doesn't mean the movie didn't suck. :P I guess the failure of this movie could be a blessing in disguise though because it means they might listen to the critics and trust the judgement of the people who know what made the original good.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. I loved it. The best eye candy movie I've ever seen. The story was better than I anticipated having read some reviews that said it was non existent to terrible. Yes the dialogue is oddly wooden during intended romantic moments but it ventures into camp territory for me and remains entertaining. I'm a big Fifth Element fan and I liked the things it was criticised for. Same here.

I saw the trailer for that last week when I went to see Dumbkirk on Imax. It actually looked alright so I'm glad to read your impression.

Rogue One

Hadn't seen this yet so decided to sit down and watch it today. It wasn't too bad, expected worse and the reports about the final battle were spot on. Don't know if it's got the pull for me to watch it again like some of the others but I enjoyed it for what it was. I liked some of the back story and seeing Grand Moff Tarkin again was great, Leia looked a little weird though.

Couple of things that irked me. Why could the X-Wings take down an AT-AT, were their weapons stronger than the snow speeders? Why doesn't the Empire decommission pass codes when one of their ships goes missing? (This is relevant for RotJ too). I had another in my head while watching the film but it's slipped my mind as I write this.

I really enjoyed Rogue One. Thought it was a far better film than TFA. Ending scene with Vader was so good.

Saw this last night and I agree with that last bit when they were back on the USCC Covenant. Only explanation I have is that David waited before enabling Mother to announce a foreign lifeform in the Sickbay.

Was a pretty good movie, but not scary at all. Lacked the tenseness and horror of Alien and Aliens.

It.

I read the book when I was about 19...maybe 20. I kind of remember back then being a bit put off because of the kids (I didn't really like any of them) and the end of the book being about a giant turtle. Anyway, of course I'm going to see a movie adapted from a book I didn't really enjoy in the first place.

Movie sucked. I'll definitely go and see the second part if they make it.

I kind of wouldn't mind them doing The Stand. The original "made for tv" version is good enough though so it's not like it doesn't have a quite good "movie" version. Nevertheless, I could imagine a great modern adaptation for The Stand. It's definitely my all time favourite King novel. But as far as It goes, no. Not his best novel.
