Should foreign really be considered a genre? I would have thought that foreign films should still be considered under the constraints of the 'regular' genres (ie. Action, Drama etc?).

Candy, Animation is not a genre!

According to Wikipedia, there are three main ways to define a film genre: setting, mood, and format. Animation as a genre falls under the Format category, but individual animated films could of course be described using a setting or mood genre as well.

The problem with Wikipedia is that anybody can edit it. As an animator let me tell you now that animation is an art form, not a genre. You can have animated drama's, comedies, action movies or thrillers. Saying you're watching an animation movie to somebody doesn't tell them anything about the narrative or story.

This is the biggest problem with the oscars and other award shows. Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Iron Giant) is notoriously known for oing schizo on the academies for separating films told through animation from every other film.

But surely the fact that it's possible to separate films into the two genres (animated and non-animated) suggests that they are in fact genres.

There's also many other ways to separate the way films are shot/created. Just because they differ it doesn't mean that it is automatically a new genre. My same point stands with trying to classify foreign films as a genre. Just because the language is different, it doesn't mean that the film itself should be considered any differently to an english language film.

Yes! And I imagine they would be very different films. The beauty of animation (imo) is that you can do things in animation that you can't do with live action. But I doubt that any animated actor could have the screen presence possessed by great actors such as Brando and DeNiro.

I have doubts about "foreign" being a genre, especially when most movies are foreign from an Australian perspective. But this thread goes to show that anything is a genre. "Kevin Costner", "Kung Fu", "Adventure Trilogy", "Australian Cult", "Weird", "Movies in which Joe Pesci is a badass" - everything's a genre.

Bloodsport is awesome though. Van Damme is awesome. But then again... action movies of the 80s and 90s in general just kicked so much ass. Van Damme. Stallone. Willis. Arnie. etc. All have so many awesome action movies
