Favourite genre movies?

Post by Scullibundo »

Movies don't get enough love on this forum.

What is your favourite movie from each genre?

You may list a movie more than once if it fits into both genre's.

You may list ONE runner up movie.

Note: Animation is not a genre, it's an artform.

Here's my list:

ACTION: Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Runner Up: True Lies
Honourable Mention: The Matrix

DRAMA: Almost Famous
Runner Up: Schindler's List
Honourable Mention: The Shawshank Redemption, Grave of the Fireflies

COMEDY: I Heart Huckabees
Runner Up: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Honourable Mention: Kung Pow

SCIENCE FICTION: Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Runner Up: The Matrix
Honourable Mention: STAR WARS OT

THRILLER: Munich
Runner Up: The Usual Suspects
Honourable Mention: Se7en

HORROR: Signs (This may be seen as thriller or sci fi though)
Runner Up: 28 Days Later

FAMILY: The Incredibles
Runner Up: The Prince of Egypt
Honourable Mention: Aladdin

FOREIGN: Spirited Away
Runner Up: HERO
Honourable Mention: Mononoke Hime

I didn't include documentary or sports, I can change that if anybody has an issue with it. :D

GO!

Should foreign really be considered a genre? I would have thought that foreign films should still be considered under the constraints of the 'regular' genres (ie. Action, Drama etc?).

Good thread BTW!

According to Wikipedia, there are three main ways to define a film genre: setting, mood, and format. Animation as a genre falls under the Format category, but individual animated films could of course be described using a setting or mood genre as well.

Also, Candy said so.

The problem with Wikipedia is that anybody can edit it. As an animator let me tell you now that animation is an art form, not a genre. You can have animated drama's, comedies, action movies or thrillers. Saying you're watching an animation movie to somebody doesn't tell them anything about the narrative or story.

This is the biggest problem with the oscars and other award shows. Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Iron Giant) is notoriously known for oing schizo on the academies for separating films told through animation from every other film.

Candy, you are wrong.

But surely the fact that it's possible to separate films into the two genres (animated and non-animated) suggests that they are in fact genres.

There's also many other ways to separate the way films are shot/created. Just because they differ it doesn't mean that it is automatically a new genre. My same point stands with trying to classify foreign films as a genre. Just because the language is different, it doesn't mean that the film itself should be considered any differently to an english language film.

If the same film was created twice, once shot on film, and once animated, with exactly the same dialogue, would you still argue that the two films fall into different genres?

Goodfellas is shit? WTF are you smoking?! 23rd best movie ever according to IMDB voters.

Mallrats may be a little more subjective, but....wait no it's not. Mallrats is hilarious. You make more sense when you post annoying high-res logos. :fight

Yes! And I imagine they would be very different films. The beauty of animation (imo) is that you can do things in animation that you can't do with live action. But I doubt that any animated actor could have the screen presence possessed by great actors such as Brando and DeNiro.

I have doubts about "foreign" being a genre, especially when most movies are foreign from an Australian perspective. But this thread goes to show that anything is a genre. "Kevin Costner", "Kung Fu", "Adventure Trilogy", "Australian Cult", "Weird", "Movies in which Joe Pesci is a badass" - everything's a genre.

1. The Untouchables
2. JFK
3. Wyatt Earp

These are also the only Costner movies I have seen. And I'm not sure if I've seen Wyatt Earp, there are so many movies about Wyatt Earp so I may be getting confused.

Fuck you. Mallrats fucking owns. Can't comment on Goodfellas just yet... and Shanghai Noon... well, i won't comment.

Bloodsport is awesome though. Van Damme is awesome. But then again... action movies of the 80s and 90s in general just kicked so much ass. Van Damme. Stallone. Willis. Arnie. etc. All have so many awesome action movies
