Fuck me. After I heard that any enthusiasm I had left for this franchise was completely lost. JJ is an extremely average film maker. Extremely average. This will be a fairly safe and boring final act into what should have been an awesome trilogy. Fuck I'm still so upset how average and vanilla TFA was. Fuck!

I don't mind JJ's movies, in fact out of all I've seen from him I've enjoyed including Cloverfield.

Story details are, of course, being kept on a secure hard drive at Cyberdyne Systems, but Cameron and Miller are treating the new movie as a direct sequel to Cameron's Judgment Day. And the themes of the potential evils of technology will once again be at the fore.

But the new movie will also be seen as a passing of the baton to a new generation of characters.

Cameron isn't writing the script. Cameron isn't directing.

I'm not excited.

My interest is piqued, but I really don't see anything to get excited about just yet.

My interest will be further piqued if they confirm a return to R rated horror roots.

First movie was only R13 in NZ and the second was R16. Those ratings should've been the other was around.

A 1980s R rating would be seen as pg13 by today's moral standards I reckon.

It doesn't have to be R, but the tone of the movie needs to be serious and not "marvel comic book" tone if you know what I mean.

I personally think a sequel is unecessary. Just do a prequel story set before Kyle Reese was sent back to 1984 to save Sarah from assassination.

To me the only thing left to tell is the events that happened before the machines went back in time so we can see a Terminator war movie. In much the same way we got Alien's (and it was presented as a type of viet nam war in space) that's what needs to be done with Terminator series where we get to see how John was abble to win against them. Were they just dumb? Did they have virus uploaded into them? Did hackers reprogram some and reverse engineer the tech to use against the machines? In the future of the pre-time travelling Kyle, did the soldiers have EMP to kill the network so they couldn't operate effectively until they could be EMP shielded to resist that? Knowing HOW did the humans win should be the whole point of the movie. And present it as a war movie like Aliens. That's it. And then don't milk the franchise. Just let it be the final movie. Unless humans decide to turn into cyborgs themselves and fight each other for control. But then it wouldn't be machine vs man story, it would just be man embracing technology to make himself into machines rather than being bossed around by them. We still don't have computers that can learn. They just look for pattens and identify trends in the patterns but this is not thinking for themselves. Machines are still fucking dumb and despite the speed they can think at they still make stupid assumptions on things based on patterns not on evidence like humans.

In the prequel the lesson should be that despite superior speed and efficiency the machines can't feel, and without feeling and having the heart for war, they are just doing a job. (these are the overpaid government workers who just got into politics for money and to make a career out of it, not to serve the people and actually change society or in how things are done because they have found some solution to a problem. And that's the weakness: they can't think for themself, they just repeat a pattern or do what they were conditioned to think is right. Individuals with creative minds can overcome any security a drone can by inventing drone jammers and unconventional technology to counter machines. It would be the anti-transhumanist movie in a sea of pro-transhumanist crap that has come out of hollywood today)
Some ideas would be to come up with new designs for powered armor, the breeding of dogs to detect machines by snifffing them out, trap-setting tech which senses robots based on weight of the person so if it is a robot the mine goes off (robots are heavier so it can smart detect who is flesh and bone and who is flesh with metal etc)

The should be a lot of "mech porn" showing the technology in action and how it works which is sorely missed in a lot of modern science fiction movies of today. The people should know how the gadgets the humans make actually work. It's not Michael Bay blockbuster movie stuff but a nerds movie that explains things by showing how thing work. (not verbal descriptions) The inclusion of beam weapons technology is a must. The conventional weapons to shoot should be used to stop a robot by blowing chunk off of them (because they don't feel pain you see) but the beam weapons can finish them off. This wouldn't be a survival movie but a war movie where scientists had been working around the clock to create the weapons needed to kill the robots easily. (so not a repeat of terminator 1 where humans are mere prey for the robot to hunt thanks to having shit weapons to fight it with).

The advantage of machines is they have the head start and that's it: they are not unstoppable force, but they are overall "winning" because of the lack of need to sleep and ability to work non-stop much like the Orcs in Lord of the Rings. The scary factor comes in the sheer number of them more than how calculating and intelligent they are.
With all the CG these days they can do some great futuristic war scenes with beam guns and CG gore that doesn't look cheesy. A guy getting blown up doesn't just fly into the air, but you see his limbs cut off and in pain saving-private ryan-style. But it would not glorify violence. Humans are scarce and much like zombie apocalyse each person lost is a big setback on the chance of success. (remember when movies actually had danger in them and actual consequences for fucking things up?? And how this added suspense to action scenes? I do. And you don't get this anymore)

James Cameron knew how to put suspense in his aliens and terminator movies. If you can't do it right, the tone of the movie turns from action suspense into popcorn flick and you don't want this. You should get to know the characters, care about each one as if they were vital organs in a functioning system, and when one dies, it can be lethal. Eg in Aliens the aliens were stronger faster, and more numerous than the soldiers. But the humans had guns and tech. But the aliens were smart enough to cut off ammo supplies and grounding the marines by attacking dropship. So there is danger in the fact that the humans power is limited. That same thing should be present in Terminator prequel. Since the machines have the factories and humans have to scrap together what they can and be seen as underdogs. They have potential to kick butt but only if they don't fuck up. But fucking it up is very easy to do because of lack of chances due to limited resources. This way you care about them more to not fuck something up and want to know what happens because the direction can go either way. (more numerous machines can overpower humans, and humans can use more agilty and flexibility because they are small and hard to track due to knowing what to expect from machines which have to follow a system and can't think for themselves on individual level. (making them predictable in behavior)

94% average on RT. Sounds better than Flatliners.

Do you think Officer K is out to hunt Decker? I've heard theories that Decker was a replicant.

the 3 short films you can see which take place before the events of the movie (all in one clip):
nice loredump for me since I haven't seen it yet. Replicants are deep niggas. But humans have magic and fortune cookies to give them reason to live. Something science fiction authors always forget because they are boring athiests who view living beings as things not spirits with a body, instead of body with a thing in it called consciousness. What made movies like the Matrix so popular was the spiritual messages in it questioning reality. I don't think this will have as big impact even though clearly Blade Runner is reconised as classic. People today have short attention span and blade runner was a slow moving movie that americans hated. Maybe this movie only appeals to fans only and some philosophical people. I predict lack of action in it will turn off the masses.

One of the best sequels I've ever seen. It's not hard to imagine that the modern audience will not like this.

After watching the original Blade Runner last night and now 2049... It's impressive how well they did it. possibly partly because the original was so ahead of its time.

The visuals and especially the score for 2049 was insanely good.
I'm so impressed that it was so smart and asked me to think.

I'm going to watch Blade Runner again before I see the new movie.

One thing I remember a lot about Blade Runner in the 80s was how they made the streets so grimy and smokey.

There is a guy on youtube that does retrospectives of movies from the 80s that has done a good job reviewing the old blade Runner:
Also the thing I liked about judge Dredd movie was how it made me feel like I was back in the 80s science fiction movie days again where the vast majority of them were dystopian futures instead of clean and optimistic futures. I will never trust corporations or big governments and those old movies were great for showing the badness of utopian ideals. Hollywood needs to look back into the past to see what made Terminator, Blade Runner, Alien and Aliens popular. (to a lesser extend robocop as well. But robocop was more comical and didn't take itself so seriously with humor to lighten it up a bit) You got the feeling that technology was beneficial and convenient but that people were also weaker because they relied too much on it (example how elevators in the future are still slow and the controls are not perfect because the people who built it were not perfectionists and possibly underpaid so they rushed it) and then when the machines rise up or the greedy guy uses the tech to enslave them, the future becomes a dark and oppressive world to live in because they let their guard down thinking they were going to get the star trek type world they were led to believe instead of the Robocop one where corporations would work with bad guys to obtain profits instead of serving the best interest of people and be motivated by righteous reasons and justice.

Within any group there is always some dickhead trying to rule the world. You don't get the utopia because the fallen nature of people gets in the way. This is what differentiates the cartoony george jetsons future with film future of 80s science fiction. The world is scary, it is not happy. There are monsters in suits pulling the strings and they don't give a fuck about you. I would never want to go to a futuristic hong kong with smoke and shit flooding my nostrils like in blade runner. That's thanks to 80s movies telling me it must be polluted as fuck.

I’m not really movie guy, but I’m a big fan of Blade Runner, loved everything about it including the soundtrack and didn’t feel it needed a sequel, but this might change now.
