Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
I'm not necessarily talking about the standard of the footy, it's been a good year for the game in terms of NSW winning origin and the Bunnies winning the GF. Rugby League has dominated TV ratings this year. As a product the results have been good.
I think the standard of footy has been better than 2013. I thank the clamping down on the wrestling for that. It's still far from perfect. I'd like to see that 0th tackle from the 20m restart gone. There's too many massive possession swings in the game at the moment, it feels unbalanced.

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
The 20m restart is shit now. Losing the ball trying to score a try and missing a field goal should not be penalised with 7 tackles to the opposition team.
I think a better solution would be to have the team start a normal set of tackles from wherever the ball was kicked. A normal 20m restart would apply if the ball is kicked from inside the 20m zone, or if it's a field goal attempt. But if you kick the ball dead from 40 metres out, then the opposition get to start their set from that point.

I don't like it. What was wrong with it originally? It was pretty rare that teams exploited it, and even then it wasn't such a big deal. I can really only think of the Titans playing Melbourne where it was obviously being used as a tactic.

NSW players dominate the Kangaroos squad, Australia gets rolled by NZ. Typical.

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
Blame the shitty depth of Queensland. With 20+ players unavailable, there's probably only 2 or 3 Queenslanders who could consider themselves unlucky not to have made the 24 man squad.
Australia are fucked in the forwards. We have no front rowers who can match it with New Zealand and England. With the likes of Matt Scott, Andrew Fifita, James Tamou, Nate Myles and even Trent Merrin and Paul Gallen all unavailable, our only genuine front rowers are fringe rep players at best. Lillyman could consider himself unlucky not to be picked ahead of a few forwards, but he's hardly going to carry the front row. The likes of Sam Thaiday and Corey Parker in the front row sure backfired. As did playing Greg Inglis while he was sick, having a hooker on the bench with no utility value and a bunch of ball hogs in the second row.
Also losing Hayne really fucked us. Had he been in the side, he slots straight to fullback and Australia lose nothing. Instead we have to move a rookie centre who has barely played any fullback. That's when the game was well and truly lost.

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
Samoa game was fantastic. They can feel hard done by. The referee made two incorrect calls that directly led to tries to England. The difference in the end was goal kicking.
Even with those calls, Samoa were the better team and could have won. Take out Ben Roberts and Kyle Stanley who would have to be the worst halves pairing I have ever watched play the game, and they would have won with literally any other players in their place. Even a couple of front rowers trying to do the playmaking would have been an improvement.
Kyle Stanley somehow played worse then Ben Roberts. Which takes a pretty massive effort to do.

I thought Roberts was pretty good. It will help that they get Lafai back next week

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
NSW claim victory at being the most represented in the Australian team, we get flogged. Josh McGuire should be playing for Australia, and Tim Sheens ought to be ashamed of himself for picking Farah. Ben Hunt was the far better option, regardless of hindsight.
I went to the game and it was a great day. They definitely should do this again, I loved it. Samoa/England was the better game, but I thought Roberts' kicking game was embarrassing. It was a shame for the Samoans, I think they were robbed of victory too.

Thankfully, he's also found some sense and had Parker start at 13 with Bird in the second row. That was ridiculous.
Edit: Oh shit Farah is still there. It's the biggest waste of a bench spot. Smith should never be replaced.

So the Kangaroos were doing an in-store appearance, autograph signing etc at Rebel Sport in Melbourne today. I went along to check it out, and I reckon the players, support staff and sponsors reps outnumbered the fans about 2:1.

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
Australia lucky to get away with the win. The spine all had shockers yet somhoe Smith got Man of the Match. We didnt look good until Ben Hunt came on.He ignited our attack, ontop of not having Thaiday cripple it. Our best players were Bird, Jennings and Hunt, but his short cameo killed his MOTM chances. He plays 80 and its his for sure.
Poms are whinging about the final call, but if Hall did get downward pressure, then so did Inglus with his first touch to knock it dead. For mine he never grounded it though. A single pinky brushing a bouncing ball is a knock on IMOZ especially with the referee ruling no try and not having conclusive evidence to overturn it.

If Hall grounds it, then so does GI.

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
His hands weren't moving down, he was trying to scoop it dead... I think the pins were ripped off, the explanation was the ball was on its way up but that wasn't the case, it was on the ground and his finger was bent back showing there was downward pressure, you only need one finger to score a try.
I know he wasn't even going for it and it would have been a fluke, but a try is a try and that was a try... Not 50/50, not even 99/1... There was downward pressure as the ball was on the ground and you could clearly see it on the replay.
I want australia to win this thing, but they should be out

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
His fingers still force the ball into the ground, that's more then Hall can say. You don't need to be trying to ground the ball for it to count.
Im happy with the call as I see either both players as having grounded it, or neither did. Which both mean it's not a try.
Just means poms missed out on a drop out, and maybe 2 tackles.

You need downward pressure, one "grounding" had downward pressure, one didn't... There's the difference.

Re: Official NRL 2014 Thread - Souths winners by default
Hall didnt have downward pressure. He had a singls dinger brush the edge of the ball, and that side.od the.ball was.bounxing up.into his hand.as hs did. The ball went into his hand, not the other way around. No downward pressure and certainly cant overrule a try on one frame that doesnt prove anything other then his hams.might have grounded it. Some.angles show what looks like grass between his hand and the ball.jizzlobber wrote:You need downward pressure, one "grounding" had downward pressure, one didn't... There's the difference.
Inglis has.more evidence to.prove he grounded the.ball then Hall did.

Yeh because it was a try.
Bunch of one eyed cheats around here! His finger was bent backwards ffs... I don't care if it was1 frame, the ball was on the ground as his finger forced it.
