Human remains, believed to be a head, have been stolen from a Melbourne cemetery, the second theft of partial remains in as many weeks.

Police were called to Footscray General Cemetery in the city’s west on Tuesday morning on reports a grave had been disturbed.

It’s believed unknown offenders forced entry to a mausoleum - an above-ground tomb - before stealing remains.

Detectives are now working to determine whether it is linked with another incident at the same site a week earlier.
