Re: Going to the States
I'm heading to the US for a conference (Orlando) in about a month, and am looking to spend a couple of days in LA before the conference (as I have to stopover there anyway).
Any recommendations for things to do in LA? I don't want to "waste" my chance to be there, but I'm not really big on sports or shopping...

Where are you hiring from? (you're in Hawaii right?)pilonv1 wrote:Renting a car in the US is a right cunt. Trying to work it out now and the insurance is a nightmare.

Nevermind them having a home game. That said the NFC West was was fucking terrible last year so you never know. Oakland aren't much better either so I would say not much chance of them making the playoffs let alone a home game.
Get me some Golden State Warriors gear while you're there Ags
Damned if I know why you want some Golden State Warriors gear though. Talk about terrible teams that never make playoffs.
Don't stay in LA. Go south, north or East. How long is your stop over?Seraph wrote:I'm heading to the US for a conference (Orlando) in about a month, and am looking to spend a couple of days in LA before the conference (as I have to stopover there anyway).

Re: Going to the States
Seconding don't stay in LA. Stay in Anaheim or go north to the Bay Area which has better food, better wine and is a better place to be in general.
Re: Going to the States
Only fun I had in LA was Universal Studios which is worth the trip just for the Simpsons and King Kong ride.AgOnNy wrote:

Ended up going through http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; after some good testimonials on Trip Advisor.AgOnNy wrote:Where are you hiring from? The biggest problem is that they cant give you an exact quote, because they all have 30 different types of insurance.

Re: Going to the States
If you're coming over with decent travel insurance you only want LDW (for your liability to the rental car company) and SLI (think comprehensive car insurance if you hit someone else). UMP is a crock since your travel insurance will pay for any medical bills sustained in an accident and ditto for PPP and your personal effects.
I already have auto insurance that covers rentals so it's dirt cheap to rent a car but when I came over I sure as hell needed LDW and SLI.

Re: Going to the States
Yeah I got travel insurance so I'm not concerned about the personal stuff. Everyone's rates for LDW and SLI are different, and then there's all these stupid 4% taxes in Hawaii too.

Re: Going to the States
dumb question I think I know the answer to but don't want to destroy my iPad/phone
Is it worth me getting a US plug for my iPad charger to charge my iPad/phone, or can I just use one of those Korjo USA plugs and use that on my current charging block?

My Android phone & tablet never had a problem with the Korjo or a US charger.

Re: Going to the States
It's the same thing. All of Apple's chargers are 110-240V universal. You can even unplug the plug adapter and plug in an unpolarized C7 cord (think portable radio power cord) to get power to it.pilonv1 wrote:dumb question I think I know the answer to but don't want to destroy my iPad/phone

$500 for 4 days rental so far and I got a shitty Chrysler 300. They wanted me to pay $100 more for a shit 4 wheel drive too.
Other than that everything is awesome and cheap.

Hawaii rentals are fucked. There's like 7 different taxes before you even get to insurance.

Re: Going to the States
Anyone noticed a jump in flight taxes? Was looking at award flights to the US only a week or two ago. Total taxes for Mel-LAX return was about $320. Now its over $600.
Can't find anything on the net about it. Only a new tax for those flying out of the UK.

Re: Going to the States
Are you flying with Delta by any chance? I booked a recent flight with VA but it's a code share with Delta. Have had to pay an extra tax which has to do with the internal section, not really to clear but the flight was still cheap.Mavy wrote:Anyone noticed a jump in flight taxes? Re: Going to the States
Nah it's Qantas. Looking to use my frequent flyer points but it looks like the taxes are going to be twice as much now. Might wait to see what sort of fares they offer in their upcoming sale.

Re: Going to the States
Keep in mind Qantas mix their fuel surcharge in with their taxes and how much they charge depends on the price of oil, the tides, the phase of the moon, whether there's an R in the month, etc etc etc.

Re: Going to the States
I found months ago that the taxes when using FF points were ridiculous. It's why we ended up getting sub $400 flights to Honolulu through Jetstar and using the FF points on other stuff.Mavy wrote:Nah it's Qantas.
