Re: Going to the States
I'm tossing up between Hawaii or San Fran.
Same cost, but Hawaii will be longer 10 nights whereas San Fran will only be 4 nights. Really don't know how long I can get off of work (still within my first 6mths), which is why I'm thinking the week in San Fran may be the go.
San Fran
+ an awesome suite in a great hotel
+ awesome people
+ great shopping (clothes, food, shoes, electronics, plenty of discount stores)
+ great food (restaurants and fast food)
+ In 'n' Out Burger
+ trams!
+ the Golden Gate Bride and Bay area
- only 4 nights
- more expensive
- too cold to go swimming
Hawaii
+ fantastic beaches
+ tropical paradise
+ awesome people
+ Shorebird!
+ 10 nights away
+ the best cookies from the Double Tree Hotel
- less variety for shopping (doesn't get as much as the mainland)
- doesn't have as much food to choose from
- a lot of tourists
- average room at the hotel
Any help?

Hawaii. San Fran is awesome but 10 nights in Hawaii is better than 4 days in San Fran.
I wish I could have 10 nights in Hawaii!

Re: Going to the States
If you're goin' to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're goin' to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there
For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair
All across the nation
Such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation
With a new explanation
People in motion, people in motion
For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair

In Hawaii at the moment, looking out my balcony into the ocean.
Wish I was here longer than 2 nights

I love that we all go around the world to these great places and then post on GR.

Re: Going to the States
I've locked down San Fran now. Pretty much have an idea of what I'm doing and been reading more into things the locals go to and do. Fingers crossed all goes well and we get on the flights with no probs come October.

Have you been to San Fran before?

Re: Going to the States
Yeah, but tacked it onto the end of the trip last year for a few of nights. This time, I've done my reading.
The short time I was there last year, it completely blew me away.

Yeah, great city. If I were to live in the US it'd be my first choice.

Get out of town and down to Orange County. Hit up Balboa and Ruby's.
Re: Going to the States
Hey Twiztid Elf where in San Diego did you stay? Also who is everyone flying with? I was looking at United Airlines from Sydney to San Diego for about $1200 I think.

Re: Going to the States
I went with V Australia they were pretty good, me and the misses only paid $900 each.
Re: Going to the States
Avoid United if you can, they're horrible.

I wouldn't mind visiting the USA but I know I'd struggle massively with food over there. Fruit, vitamins, spirulina and protein shakes for me.

Going to the States
The USA is right at the bottom of our list, apart from New York City. We get drenched in American culture so there's not a lot to be had from going there above anywhere else in the world.

Have to say, the quality of the fruit and veg I saw was pretty good. Even the salad on a Macca's burger there tastes nice and fresh.Peppermint Lounge wrote:I wouldn't mind visiting the USA but I know I'd struggle massively with food over there. Fruit, vitamins, spirulina and protein shakes for me.
Farmers Markets is where its at.
Re: Going to the States
wat. I think you're dealing with silly stereotypes there Pep, you only need to go to a Whole Foods or something similar and you'd be in heaven. Especially in California there are PLENTY of people just like you who care intensely about what they put in their body and what their body looks like.Peppermint Lounge wrote:I wouldn't mind visiting the USA but I know I'd struggle massively with food over there. Re: Going to the States
Yep I have no doubt the many fit dudes over there know where to go and eat well.. I hear from multiple trusted sources it's hard while touring ie: you check in, want some decent food so head out to a local. Bad bread, overabundance of junk. Mind you these people are less predisposed to looking for good food and would settle for shit whereas I'd continue on until I found something.mech wrote:wat. Re: Going to the States
Good food is everywhere, not hard to find at all. Best bit is they keep good stuff for themselves, not sell it all overseas like we do.
One of my days in NYC I wanted to checkout KFC to see what they had that was different, fuck it took me awhile to find one. NYC isn't littered with fast food joints like you'd think.
In terms of food though, San Fran wins for the quality and creativeness.

Re: Going to the States
V Australia does not go straight to San Diego unlike United but if they are shit how's Delta they are about the same price and I meant leaving from Melbourne not Sydney.
The plan is to go to Comic Con 2011 so this all depends on if I can get the 4 day pass with preview night before they sell out. I thought I would leave the Saturday before which gives me about 4 days to do stuff around San Diego like shopping and going to attractions. Then do the 4 days at Comic Con and come back. Was going to do New York as well but just will not be able to afford both comfortably.

Re: Going to the States
It all depends where you are in the US. But in places like New York or San Francisco it is not difficult at all to find amazing, cheap, convenient, healthy food. It's also easy to find incredibly huge portions of junk if that's what you want. That's what makes the US awesomePeppermint Lounge wrote:Yep I have no doubt the many fit dudes over there know where to go and eat well.. Re: Going to the States
This is fucked looking at all the hotels in San Diego, trying to get something in the city near the convention center and other shit I want to see and I am getting a price of $2000 to $3000 for 9 nights.
