I think a lot of it has to do with first world entitlement - I've seen it in a lot of foreigners who travel through Asian countries where just because they are from somewhere like America, UK or Australia that they are somehow better and treat the country like an amusement park. They were found guilty under Indonesian law and sentenced accordingly. How dare the Indonesians actually go ahead and carry out the sentence? As for the AFP, they would have a memorandum of agreement with the Indonesian authorities about passing intelligence. If the Indonesians got wind that they were holding back we'd be cut off completely, or severely curtailed. Unfortunately, the Australian public and Abbott backed Widodo into a corner with all the jingoistic rhetoric, he could do nothing except carry out the execution or commit political suicide. I think the judiciary got it right over there, the leaders got the death penalty and the mules got life - seeing first hand how destructive drugs are in a community I wish we had tougher penalties here.

The thing that bothers me is how these people are being portrayed as heroes or something, I can't believe it.

Why should we care about them? Did they care for the people buying the drugs? Shows they care for the mules who are now spending the rest of their lives in jail?

It's harsh, but they made their own bed...

Just shut up and go back to school. Chan and Sukumaran were heroes. Uncompromisingly human. Reformed and redeemed. Apparently.

Part of me can't avoid seeing the horror of a decade on death row and then execution. The other part of me can't avoid seeing who they were, what they were going to do and the horror they'd have brought into the lives of countless others. If you deal in death, perhaps this is how it should be.

I really detest that people are placing some blame on the AFP. I find that disturbing.

I'm conflicted by it. On one hand they knew the deal, chanced it and lost. On the other, 10 years fits the crime, executing them now is just a waste. I find the outcome to be very sad.

Re: the Bali 9 stuff, the death penalty is problematic in general, and makes little sense in this scenario.
To me, any response to a crime, is supposed to a) rehabilitate the offender, 2) deter the offender and potential future offenders, or iii) both.
When the death penalty is enacted on an individual level, that means that you're declaring the offender as being unable to be rehabilitated ever. When the death penalty is the standard penalty for a crime, that means that you're making the blanket statement that trying to scare off other would-be criminals from this particular offense is so important that you're willing to kill offenders for it. It suggests that the crime is so sinister that rehabilitation isn't an option, or alternately, that you're willing to kill offenders in order to more effectively deter potential offenders. The statements from Indonesian government on this have made this clear more than once - they will happily kill smugglers because they want to deter potential offenders.

The problem for me is partly the idea of declaring someone as a lost cause, incapable of rehabilitiation, and partly the fact that the death penalty isn't working to deter anyone.

Corby was going through the Indonesian legal system and through Australia's media coverage frenzy while Chan and Sukumaran planned their operation. They found 7 other people that were willing to try to smuggle the drugs at a time when someone who smuggled half as much of a lesser class drug was on the news every other day trying to avoid 20-life. The 9 of them still went ahead with the operation.

In January of this year, while Chan and Sukumaran were trying every possible avenue to avoid death, 9 different smugglers from Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia, were caught trying to move over 800kg of meth.

The other day, Chan and Sukumaran were exectued with six others. A seventh was supposed to be shot too, but has received a pardon for now in order to testify in another case involving yet another group of smugglers.

That's untrue because that post is racist. Racism is a crime and white people don't commit crimes.
