Re: the Metal thread
20 years ago Fear Factory's Demanufacture came out. One of the best metal albums to come out in the 90's and one that changed my life musically. I'll never forget hiring the 12 seater out from Tafe College, the dodgy battery, getting metalhead fans to give us a push start after seeing Fear Factory live on a friday night at The Palace in St.Kilda. Good Times.

Re: the Metal thread
I've just acquired this (gotta love that Australia delay).
I know it goes without saying, but it's absolutely fucking sensational. The setlist is a good mix of their old and new stuff, and not just their big hits/singles either, which is always good to see. Pretty sure these guys have to be the premier live music experience of our generation. So bummed I've never been able to see them

I saw them headline BDO and it was one of the shows I've seen. Keep wishing Soundwave would book them.

Re: the Metal thread
I can understand why they don't, but I'd like to see them tour on their own.

Re: the Metal thread
I am sure I would absolutely love Animals As Leaders except for some ungodly reason I cannot get into purely instrumental music. I need vocals to keep me interested, no matter the quality of the music underneath.
I've been neglecting this thread, so here's some cool shit I've found recently:
Votum - Ktonik
Face The Maybe - The Wanderer
Also, Haken has a new album out at the end of the month, and it appears as though they've enhanced the heavier side of their prog metal and dropped the wankiness and cheese. Really looking forward to it.

Re: the Metal thread
Heading to Japan for 3 weeks in May.
About the only thing I could think to do is see if this Jap metal band I used to love is playing. Nice surprise to see not only are they still around, but playing whilst I'm there!!
SEX MACHINEGUNS!!!

Re: the Metal thread
New Haken album is pretty bloody good. They've replaced their 70's prog wank and cheese with 80's wank and cheese, but they're a lot tighter song-wise and far less cheesy. I fucking hate 80's synth-everything stylings and I'm still a fan of the album.
In other news, I've finally given Mastodon a decent go. When their last album came out a few years ago, I listened to a few songs and was underwhelmed. Recently I gave Crack the Skye a listen via youtube, and ended up buying the album. After repeated listens over a few weeks I now reckon it's one of my favourite albums of all time.
I'm now going back through their earlier stuff (now that I "get" them and am less put off by the vocals) and I think that I'll probably spend the rest of this year listening to them.

Re: the Metal thread
Crack the Skye is a ripper. I also love Blood Mountain - don't expect it to be the same as Crack the Skye though. It's far less proggy and more 3-5 minute-songs driven. But it's probably my second favourite of theirs.

Re: the Metal thread
Crack the Skye is an absolute ripper. Most concept albums are a bit of a wank, but it's beautifully cohesive.
I gave Remission a bash on my (short) drive to work today as it requires a bit less concentration. Giving The Hunter a run through tonight, and am really enjoying it. I can see why hardcore Mastodon fans would have disliked it, as it's a "Load/Reload" level of stylistic difference from where they started out.
I can get through a whole album when I take the train to the city for work, so tomorrow I'm having two full listens to Leviathan.

Re: the Metal thread
What was that? You guys wanted to hear what I've been working on lately?
Well, fine. It's just an early guitar/vox demo, mind - there's not exactly any recording studios around here to lay down the rest of the band's parts
(zero points for spotting the L7 reference)

I don't even know where to start processing this. Is this the Japanese answer to Rammstein?

I've been getting into Gojira. I'm really not a fan of shouty singing, but these guys have some excellent lyrics, and kickarse guitar riffs
