Yeah I don't mind Periphery. I own their EP Clear, 7 songs each written by an individual in the band which leads to 7 different sounding songs. Pretty cool I reckon.

Re: the Metal thread
I'm a fan of Periphery. They were the first band I really gave a chance to with regards to harsh vocals, because I fucking hate the majority of bands who do harsh vocals. If there aren't top quality cleans (ie the singer can really sing and isn't reliant on overdubs and processing to do cleans) then I have no interest in their music. Clear was decent, but other bands are doing more interesting things now so I'm interested in how their new album will turn out.
If you're looking for a similar style, I've really enjoyed Monuments' new album this year. Chris Barretto is their new lead singer (ex-Periphery) and his cleans have improved out of sight. Monuments is very percussive in all factors, so Barretto's cleans save the album in a lot of places from being atonal. He's mostly about the harsh vocals, but the songs in general are great and he does a great job of stylistically varying his harsh work as well. Possibly my top album for the year so far.

This goes in here right?

Got a lot of time for Scott Ian, think he's an underated guitarist. Keen to keep an eye out for his book.

Re: the Metal thread
I'm more than a little disappointed. It's a meandering mess of an album. Conceptually flawed, with no clear narrative or even a vague direction. There's a distinct lack of cool riffage, and even the most interesting parts are variations on things heard the first album. Hell, there's not even any quotable quotes to be had.
After Deconstruction, Devin Townsend has a lot to live up to, and this just plain doesn't. Especially disappointing, given how much he was talking about his plans for the album over the past few years.

Re: the Metal thread
I'm going to reserve judgement for when I listen to the album. Worryingly, the two or three songs I've heard so far can be summed up by unfunk's opinion though. The songs felt forced to me, but I'm hoping they'll make better sense within the album.

Re: the Metal thread
Mmmmm nope, Ziltoid 2 is pretty awesome. At the moment I don't think it's as good as ZTO, but shit, that album is pretty spectacular so expecting it to be as good is a tall order. The album is growing on me immensely. Sky Blue is a better Epicloud, Dark Matters has its moments but is definitely harder to get into. The best thing is it's better with each listen. The songs stand better amongst the album.

Re: the Metal thread
see, I like it... but there's no moments of outstanding greatness. There's no Hyperdrive, no Planet Smasher, no Colour Your World. There isn't anything even approaching the greatness of Planet of the Apes or The Mighty Masturbator. It's disappointing in that way. As a whole, it's... OK. As a Ziltoid album... well. Deconstruction is a better Ziltoid album than Z2.

Re: the Metal thread
Probably sits on the edge of metal, but I've been loving Eidola's new album.
Also been listening a bit to Destrage again. Their album from last year (Are You Kidding Me? No.) was one of my favourites for the year. Technically fucking awesome, heavy and actually fun music to listen to (because they're crazy Italians who sing about shooting zombies in the face)

Re: the Metal thread
Oooh, Tesseract has posted their live in concert DVD on YouTube!
Since their last album, they replaced their lead singer (Ashe O'Hara) with the guy who was the lead singer on their first album (Dan Tompkins). Dan does a pretty good job of the newer stuff, even though his high range isn't as good as Ashe's. Dan seems far more consistent live though and barely hits a slightly off note in this video. Fantastic stuff.
