So how about that Microsoft Surface?

Post by Talez »

Microsoft tablet is announced. 1080p screen (Pro version only, the RT has a "HD" not "full HD" which says to me 1366 x 768), inbuilt stand, RT (nVidia ugh)/Intel (Core i5 not Atom) versions, USB ports, multitouch cover that magnetically attaches to become a keyboard and multitouch trackpad, stylus sampling @ 600dpi.

Image

They'll sell millions of them so long as they don't fuck up this part:
Surface for WIndows RT coming in 32GB and 64GB models. Priced "like comparable tablets based on ARM."
Pro coming in 64GB and 128GB models, will be priced on par with Ultrabook-class PCs.
Windows RT verison coming with Windows 8 launch, Pro 3 months later.

Here I was thinking this was a negative thread. This is exactly what I want instead of a laptop.

Also, Windows 7 is an exceptionally good OS.

Microsoft making a killer tablet might be the kick in the pants Apple needs to realize that it's time for iOS (at least on the iPad) to grow up.

The only thing that worries me is Full HD on a 10.6" display. Microsoft's DPI scaling stuff is worse than Android's and is a clusterfuck at the best of times.

Win8 is the only thing that has me wanting a tablet, and now this hardware has really got me paying attention. I'm fine with my "smart" phone having a dumbed-down OS but not a tablet that I would actually use for productivity.

Looks like a possible xmas pressie to myself, pending reviews.

Through keyboard attachment is a necessity for me. This sort of thing is going to replace laptops.

Typing on what appears to be polyurethane will be an interesting experience though. The Pro keyboard looks to be hard with actual key travel although a bit thicker than the consumer multitouch one.

Looks like there might be an xbox flavoured tablet too as described on IGN. I'd post the picture but on my phone so can't be arsed.

Glad I held out on an iPad, been close to picking one up recently. Will wait and see how this tablet goes, so far looks good. If this thing has pinball arcade on it, I will be sold.

I'm holding out for an excellent windows based tablet. The second generation of this could be it.

Took me years to move away from Windows Mobile. I've never been desperate to buy an iPad. I like Windows.

If I was going to go either of these I'd wait for the Pro version. The RT powered by nVidia? They're struggling to outperform ARM's first in-house stab at a mobile GPU little alone the SGX543MP4+ monster.

I want to see what the Core i5 has for a GPU backing it. I'm not holding out for more than a HD4000 though. Holding out to also see about 3G/4G support too.

yeah, I'd wait for the Pro version too. Tegra 3 is a decent mobile SoC, but it's simply outclassed even by inhouse Samsung stuff, let alone Qualcomm. Of course, the Intel version will probably have terrible battery life.

having said that, this is a dead sexy device. It bodes well for a good looking Nextbox :D

Like i said in either the ios or droid thead. Fuck ios and Android on tablets their time is drawing to an end.... (they can be relegated to phones for me personally anyhow).

This hardware is what i was expecting to start filtering through. Will prob hold out for second gen intel offerings...

Man, I'm running the latest Win8 preview on my MSI Windpad 110W tablet, and it's absolute bliss. Provided it's either on something with a dedicated GPU (110W runs on the AMD Fusion platform = Radeon powahh) or is optimised specifically for the hardware (like this Surface thing) and runs as it should (you can tell the diff b/w 60 and 30fps with it) then it's definitely an iOS killer. iPad killer? No idea... but it will cause Apple to make some serious changes to iOS, no doubt.

A tablet that I can use photoshop and a stylus with on the go, that also has word = bought.

Will wait to give it a go first, but if that stylus feels responsive enough, I'll definitely grab one.

does it still have an on screen keyboard when the physical keyboard is not in use (even when still connected)?

and can you use it in your lap like a laptop? i'm sitting here now with my laptop in my lap and I can't imagine a loose pivoting keyboard with a kickstand in this position.

everything else looks awesome, apparently it's super strong too... really good stuff
I mean I just bought a iPad, but it could never take the place of my laptop, the surface can be both

Doesn't it have USB? Just plug in a better keyboard. And it should support external drives which is awesome.

Anyway the pro version will be super expensive. But I want one dearly.
