720p versus 1080i

Post by K.T.Shoe[BMs] »

Finally got my high def set top box :)

Anyway, the Philips box is default at 1080i, but after adjusting the display output, I find 720p is heaps better - actually it's awesome compare to 1080i. I find the 'jumpiness' of 1080i quite awkward to watch after seeing 720p.

Sorry if it had been done before, but any of you guys out there think the same?

What kind of TV have you got?

I've got a CRT, and it handled interlaced input like a champ. I've heard that some plasmas and LCDs can struggle and make interlaced input look awful.

What Mech said... though I didn't spend a lot of time comparing, on my HD CRT there was little discernable difference through my HD:STB, and from my extremely limited testing, the same was true for X360.

If it moves, use 720p. If it doesn't 1080i.

Yep, I've swapped a number of times between 1080i and 720p on my 360, and the only difference I can notice is that the dashboard looks crisper on 1080i.

1080i from my computer looks shit on all the fine lines, whereas stuff that's in motion (like videos and games) looks fine.

I leave my Xbox360 on 720p and my HDSTB on 1080i, mainly cos I can't tell them apart. Which network broadcats the best HD ? I would choose Nine followed by ABC's 720p then 10.

Anyone know if there's a difference b/w selecting a resolution in the 360 dash vs. 720p/1080i?

Doesn't help that digital TV has to have SD, HD and a guide simulcast into the one channel.

I have a Panasonic HD Plasma.

It is actually very obvious on Channel 9. Look closely at things like people's collars and faces.

But it's really the jumpiness that gets me with 1080i. In my opinion, I think even 576p is better.

I have a similar problem (I think) on my HD box. On ABC HD and SBS HD, sometimes there's a framerate drop, and the only way out of it is to cycle through the resolutions till you get back to it.

Yeah a lot of STB's seem to have a problem like that. I know my old SD STB used to funk up when on channel 7 every so often. It would drop to about half the frame rate and you need to cycle the channel up/down to fix it.

I notice with 720p, it's like turning on anti-aliasing on PC games.

That's it. It's a Hotchip 2000-HD or something, and it's only on ABC & SBS (probably due to lowbitrates or something since they broadcast so much). I've tried finding a firmware update for it but nothing yet.
