A couple of movies I've seen lately that have blown me away

The Paperboy (decent pulpy thriller to whet your appetite)
Killer Joe (amazing film from exorcist director William Friedkin in mid 2012)
Bug (Friedkins previous film from 2006, this is literally one of the best movies I've ever seen)
Killing them softly (American film from the director of Chopper starring Brad Pitt and Ben Mendelsohn)


Runners up:
The Place beyond the Pines (not bad, really)
Mama (haven't felt this way watching a movie since I first saw Evil Dead)
Sleeping Beauty (Decidedly Kubrickian Australian film from 2011 starring Emily Browning)

I started watching Killing Them Softly but gave up for some reason, will go back and watch again. Best movie I've seen in last 12 months where I have gone, "fuck me, this shit is all kinds of awesome" was The Raid: Redemption. Seriously one of the best action movies ever made.

IMO this scene represents a landmark in digital photography. It now looks better than film.

The movie overall has wonderful subtext through out it. It's punctuated by classy action scenes (if a little low key) amazing photography and acting, and a strong finish.

Only criticism is that yeah, it's a little dull to start off with.

I wasn't a huge fan of A Place Beyond the Pines. The first portion with Ben Gosling was well done but the last part was really dull. Definitely well made, but more of a rental. Tried watching Killing Them Softly again last night. I gave it a good hour but still turned it off, just not my cup of tea.

Well I can't say I'm a technical expert but as I said, Killing Them Softly was shot on film, not digital. So, yeah, I have no idea what you are talking about.

I prefer the realistic gun fighting not bullet time stuff.
If a live action movie is inspired by an anime it makes sense because it is a common thing you see in action scenes in animated form to highlight the emotion of the character or his hyper awareness of his surrounding just before a critical time that he/she must react in order to dodge or block the attack, but for anything else it only has the effect of slowing down the action. If the audiences eyes can't catch the slight movements if done in normal speed to be able to understand what is going on than it becomes necessary to do the slo mo. But these days they do it when doing basic actions that can be easily understood at normal speed just because it looks cool.

It should be use sparingly in live action.
You saw this in "the warriors" for instance when they had to fight in the toilets and one guy is thrown right into a toilet bowl to highlight the damage it must have done to the guys face. It's a crucial moment in time as it illustrates the point before he gets knocked out and it is a big flashy end to a fight. (using a big move)
This is like if an explosion goes off and you put it in slo mo for us to see it all in dramatic way. Doing it all the time slows the action down and ruins the flow of everything. 300 for instance shows a lot of this slowing down of time and it is not even needed. None of the moves are hard to see at the normal speed but they do it all the time just like lens flares in 90s playstation 1 games. Action movies have lost a sense of realism and I don't watch them much anymore. I don't want to watch a videogame. I like ordinary speed of the old movies when it didn't look like underwater combat.
