Goodbye Foxtel, hello Internet Overlords

Post by Candy Arse »

So I'm sick of paying too much money each month for limited viewing - sports talk shows, NFL, NRL.

I've cancelled my Foxtel account and am embracing the all-internet future.

What I think would be good is if we put together a thread with links to online alternatives - Netflix, NFL Game Pass etc. If I can put together an online package for myself that covers the latest TV shows from the US, movies, NFL and NRL then as a minimum I'm good to go.

So here's what I've got so far, would love you more resourceful guys to throw some links at me and I'll add them to this post -

Netflix - http://www.netflixaustralianow.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Hulu Plus - http://streambly.com.au/guides/how-get- ... -australia" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - $7.99USD per month
NFL Game Pass - https://gamepass.nfl.com/nflgp/secure/p ... p_gamepass" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - $204.99 USD for every game of the season inc playoffs and Superbowl.
NBA League Pass - http://watch.nba.com/nba/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; about $180 a season
UFC - http://www.UFC.TV" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - $55AUD for full PPVs
NRL - http://www.nrl.com/News/NRLonyourMobile ... fault.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

(be warned, I've not heard good things about the NRL Streaming). I believe there are free ways to watch in high quality if you want to use a VPN but I've got my parents Fotxel account on my iPad so I'm set. If you're really desperate you can go with Foxtel on Xbox for $50 a month and just subscribe during NRL season.

What's the cost for Hulu Plus each month?

Thanks dude. Hulu Plus 8 bucks USD/month.

I've just read online about a workaround to get HBO Go in Australia but it involves someone in the US sharing their cable subscription login details. Not a slam dunk solution.

The dollar dropping doesn't help with this either. Is there a need for Hulu and Netflix?

Not sure yet if there's a need, just sussing out the options. If you or anyone else has a better solution to cover TV and movies I'd love to know! iTunes? XBL/PSN?

NFL and UFC seem like no-brainers. Having access to HD Formula 1 would be nice as well.

With the NBA if they have an option that costs less and cuts out everything before the All-Star break then I'm keen. NBA pre All-Star = zzzzzzz

You can buy it by the month later in the season I think. Or you can choose just to follow a few teams.

I think the only way for F1 is through Sky, but Shaneus or someone could explain that one.

I did this at the end of the EPL season.

Foxtel supposed to be announcing/releasing "play" a non subscription "go" type ip service for ios/droid/windows on June 30th. You will all be shocked to know that this has yet to happen.

Foxtel Go on iPad is pretty awesome, if it's priced reasonably (   ) I'd look at it. Of course you sacrifice being able to record shows, but there's always half an hour or so in the buffer even when you start watching so you can skip back and not miss things.

Well that is supposed to be the point of "Play". It is supposed to be IP delivery with no contract. Hoping for some sort of pick and choose system that doesn't end up costing the same as just subscribing to the superior satellite system. I mean seriously! Looking at the XBL setup you end up paying the same as if you had a set top box with the benefit of paying for internet quota on top.

We shall see what comes of Play but knowing Foxtel I expect it to be priced out of competitiveness on purpose.

Also should this thread move to Freemasons?

It's an open discussion on legitimate alternatives to pay tv. No reason to move it.

I looked at ufc but was disappointed to learn that I would have to wait a week after airing for the ultimate fighter. It's minor I know but I'd like to be able to watch it when I want and not a week after it airs on tv in Australia...

I can vouch for NFL GamePass - best $130 I've ever spent (seems to have gone up in price this year). Every game anytime (since the 2009 season), plus NFL Network which is excellent - SOLD!

Even at $300 for 12 months I'd be in - if you enjoy NFL I can't recommend it highly enough. I often just have old games or NFL Network running in the background while I do other stuff. Gets me through the offseason.

When you start talking about US products and VPN you may as well move to the Free Masons just saying.

Anyhow...
http://www.eplondemand.foxsports.com.au/ Seems to be the only legal option for EPL streaming without a full blown contract.

I was looking to get pay tv a few years ago so I could watch NBA games, ONE HD had a few games a week which was enough to satisfy me but that wasnt enough, when I got some decent internet I got NBA league Pass and havent looked back. I could watch any game I want, never had any problems with it and I could watch the games live or whenever I want too, hell I could go back and watch any game I wanted too during the season.

If your a massive NBA fan such as myself, the only option is NBA league Pass via the net.

Doubt I will move on from Foxtel anytime soon. Watching the NRL in HD is absolutely amazing, and while it's the only thing I care about on Foxtel it keeps the missus happy as she loves IQHD, and would prefer to throw on some random episode of some show random show rather than using my HTPC which has thousands of episodes of shows that we both love, and she could watch a specific episode of a specific show.

I'll never understand PayTV here - you pay through the nose for access to watching the same shows and movies on repeat ad nauseam and you end up with more commercials than commercial television. The content isn't any better than what's on FTA, and it's subject to the same regulations anyway.

Oh and how they knew it.

$25 buy in (for fuck all channels) and the $25 for sports. With the convenience of wasting your internet quota on top. Oh and of course no AFL on PC/mac. Better off with traditional delivery.

They're just using it like the 360 version to drive home subscriptions. They're really missing what people want from it though

Well it is an expansion of the 360/Samsung version giving access to go for those subscribers and hitting a couple more platforms.

I hear the 360 base packs you currently enjoy on will be cut back too.

Oh and something about worse bitrate too?

Easier to subscribe to a poxy sd satellite box and use the go app if you want to waste your internet quota.

This will be good for people who can't get a cable or satellite install.. then again that would be people like Hercy whose apartment internets makes m0rps dialup look fast!

So after a bit of jumping ship from one site to another I have finally found the motherload.
Every league of every sport live streaming for free.
from division 2 brazilian futbol, bundesliga and EPL to college basketball, NBA and everything in between.
I dont know if I should post it here or make a new thread in free masons.
