Microsoft tries to salvage HD-DVD fuckup, demos addon

And you thought Sony could spin?
"This gives consumers choice and keeps their cost down," Collins said
No it doesn't. You guys wanted to be first to market, realised you made one hell of a fuckup and are now trying to spin it as "oh we wanted our first generation products to be old hat!" under the guise of "consumer choice".
Expect to hear 360 fanboys either a) profess their love for Microsoft making them buy an expected to be $200 add on, b) claim that they "aren't ready for HD-DVD yet" or c) proclaim loudly that they can't see the difference with HD (just like those trees in PGR3 that don't look funny and look exactly like real trees) so they can't see what all the fuss is about.
I eagerly await the first JRPG that has "HD-DVD add on required" on the box and the Xbox 540 now with "built-in HD-DVD drive" where the fanboys will then switch over from their "consumer choice" line of fanboy reasoning to "convergence = value".

how is that a fuck up?
I want the choice, and I don't want to pay extra for a drive I don't even need.
also it probably would've pushed the launch back.

Uhhh WTF?
I'd rather not have to pay for a HD-DVD drive. I'm not interested in it.. and the console is cheaper for not having it.
Also, i'd of preferred to of had my console when i got it, rather then a year later.
The add-on is a stupid idea... but if someone wants it... they have the option to purchase it. If it was cheap i'd buy it (ie. sub $200AUS). On the bright side, it won't kill the laser of my console when i watch movies. Which is what i have against watching DVD's in current consoles (other then the pathetic quality). Otherwise, i will buy a stand-alone HD-DVD/BR player. When one of them is the new standard.

If it came with a HD DVD drive, I would so far only have one movie I could watch on it. That is Pirates by Digital Playground, and I don't really enjoy watching that stuff when my housemates are around.
So far, it is a useless device. Maybe if HD DVD was a widely available format releasing with the drive would have made much more sense.
If I want to upgrade in the future I can. I probably won't need to and I doubt we will be seeing games requiring the drive. If we do, it will be in the last year of the systems life.

Either way. I'm happy with my 360 and have been since launch. No way would i have preferred waiting a year or so and paying extra for something that doesn't effect it as a gaming console.Madmya wrote:have....... IMO, MS got it right this time. Although the HD-DVD add-on shouldn't be an add-on. It should be a cheap stand-alone product. Or at the least, be able to be used on a PC aswell as the 360.

So, wanna make a bet?
50 bucks. If someone releases a HD-DVD game 1 year after the HD-DVD drive is released I win. If someone doesn't release a HD-DVD game within 1 year you win.
And to make it even fairer I'll even let you off the bet at your discretion if Microsoft virtually gives the drives away (Official RRP of less than $99 USD).

i'd love to take you up on that bet, but I won't.
we'll just make it bragging rights.
space isn't an issue so far, and if it was borderline i'm sure devs would rather squeeze their game onta a DVD (reducing video quality/ whatever) than release it on HD-DVD and cutting off the majority of the 360 userbase.

I didn't mean that square have a HD-DVD game in development. What I mean is that Square will most likely release a HD-DVD game and I'm expressing this idea like its a complete certainty to show how confident I am.
I base this on the premise that Square are willing to release a game that requires the 360 hard drive so they wouldn't be above releasing a game on HD-DVD.

The 64DD isn't really a good comparison, since it wasn't released outside of Japan, where the 64 was pretty weak. And was introduced late into the system's lifespan.Lepo5 wrote:Yeah but its not like a significant number of games will require the HD drive. It'll be freakish and rare.
Of course I could be wrong a lot of games did come out for the N64 DD
Anyway, I don't think there will be more than a couple of games released that require it, unless Microsoft replaces the DVD drive with it in the premium 360s within the next year.

Excellent trolling Talez.
Phase 1: Set the trap
Phase 2: Show everyone the trap
Phase 3: Tell everyone how to fall into the trap
Phase 4: Watch everyone fall into the trap regardless
Out of interest, what's the point of an HD DVD drive for those people who have a media centre PC set up and ready to go? Surely you can get a high-def signal to your 360 that way? And Vista is going to have all that stuff as standard, isnt it?

Having a choice whats wrong with that....................Sony fanboi's digging up dirt/faults with HD-DVD.......is that the best they can come up with.
Its better having a choice rather than been a Fanboi, been forced to pay for Blu-ray when 80% of Sony owners will be playing their PS3 through composite/Svideo on a 60cm 4:3 TV. And then they will tell you how amazing blu-ray really looks on the 5 year old TEAC composite TV...
