I'm off to Pennsylvania for work purposes in January next year but I'll have 4 days in NYC to be a tourist so I just ordered myself a couple of Knicks v Bobcats tix at Madison Square Garden!
Work has fucked me over and I no longer have a job to comeback to. Going to look at extending my stay in LA for an extra night or so and go to San Fran for a few days.
LA would still be good though, probably go hangout at Venice and Santa Monica a little longer as we won't be there too long. Trying to get 3 nights in San Fran and fly direct to Syd from there. What's the public transport like in San Fran?
You don't need a car in San Fran if you're planning on only staying in the city proper (which for 3 days is all you need). PT there is very good, and it's such a small city (7x7 miles) you can walk almost everywhere, which is what I mostly did.
Santamonica and Venice beach are absolute shitholes. I went there back in 05 and my mate and I immediately cancelled the rest of our stay there and went to New York early because we didn't want to waste 2 more days there.
The famous Santamonica pier you always see in the movies is a dilapitated piece of shit and so is the beach.

The rest of the guys are right about L.A... total shit hole... I was there for work late last year and it's a filthy hole.
It is worth looking around the hills, seeing the strip and even going down to the piers, but a day or two is all you'll need before you've seen all you need.
Beverly Hills will knock your socks off, the amount of money that place is built on is mind boggling, especially when you see multiple Ferraris and BMWs in the one driveway.
Other than that, the people and food are shit. It was my least liked place in the States. NY is fantastic, so is Dallas and San Diego.

I know what you mean, I was pretty under whelmed with the Venice beach and the santa monica. A lot of places in the states were under whelming, you can just tell the US has past its prime, lots of infrastructure is really run down and old.
I loved LA ... stayed on Sunset Boulevarde and spent a couple of days looking around Laurel Canyon at old rock star haunts. Weather was beautiful (around 25 degrees and sunny). Saw Crosby, Stills and Nash outdoors at the Greek Theatre ... saw a gig at the House of Blues across the road from my hotel. Awesome couple of days!! It is what you make it!

Wait, LOL. "Past its prime"? How many times have you been to the US? You know they're still the richest country on the planet right?
Also - all the other countries outside the US in that list are TINY and their values are skewed (and they have either high living costs or are tax havens). No other country has near as many people in magnitude AND such a high standard of living.
