PS2 fighters?
Ok Cowboys I'm looking for a nice, casual-friendly, awesome looking PS2 fighter. I'll have fun learning and unlocking characters/modes myself but the major motivation behind its purchase is some 2-player action with my partner who has a penchant for videogame arse-kicking, bless her.
The obvious choices are Tekken 5 and Soul Calibur 3, both lavish productions with widescreen and progressive scan support. Which would you recommend? I haven't owned a fighter since buying Tekken Tag with my PS2 back in 2000.

Bought Tekken 5. Can't fathom my 6 year old PS2 is running it for a start. It's absolutely stunning. The CG movies are incredible. It includes arcade perfect Tekken 1, 2 & 3 for gawds sake. PAL shafted out of 480p again but this version includes a PAL 60hz mode. Hmm? This gen I thought Dreamcast and XBox were the only platforms to occupy that space. Very happy with my purchase. Partner and I are going to be having some fun with this.

Hmm well my partner and I certainly had fun but her verdict is Tekken Tag Tournament is better by virtue of tag matches and Tekken Bowl. For me I certainly notice T5's improvements over TTT and yet the points she raise are decisive. It's amazing how good TTT still looks these days actually, parallax scrolling aside. Therefore T5 is getting the arse in favour of Soul Calibur 3. I ran up the SC3 website and played her the game trailer and she loved seeing all the weapon-slashing. So be it - makes more sense that our other fighter should be from another franchise anyway.

It's actually starting to grow on me now. Graphically it does have some amazing moments. It's far less button-mash friendly than Tekken when playing against AI. The AI creams you by the third round unless you know the basics.
I've noticed the colours are washed out compared to tekken though. Lots of blues, greys and browns. Even the normally red Namco logo during the opening splash screens is a dull orange vs its normal bright red. Wondering if there's a fault? Can anyone please confirm?
Will keep an eye out for SC2 I think. If anyone has a PS2 copy in good condition they want to sell feel free to drop me a PM.

I retract my above post.
I just got a couple of less colourful stages while trialing. Have played through a couple of chars and it's astoundingly colourful. Looks easily as good at Tekken 5 too. Like T5 it's hard to believe a 6 year old console you can buy for $187 these days outputs those visuals. Played some two player with partner just now and we had an awesome time. Fighting so much more spectacular than Tekken. Voldo FTW!

Speaking of which, I need to get in more game time with my girl. She's awesome for getting all the collecty things I can't be arsed with (like all the hidden stuff in Kameo or GTA) while I like doing the stuff she doesn't (like the fighting bits). Don't think she'd play any fighting games with me though (shame too with DOA4 on the shelf and 4 controllers sitting around, and multiple housemates to play against).
Which reminds me Pep, we need a games night again soon.
