Re: Might as well rename it London 2012 pool side
Get rid of the gay sports like synchronised swimming, that dancing horse routine, infact anything that involves horses and bring in UFC as an Olympic Sport.

The sport is mixed martial arts. UFC is a brand. That's like your mum calling all consoles the sega.

Yeah but if I said MMA then people might've thought I meant some EA game.

No we all know what MMA is tomby you noob.
I tweeted Dana White last week saying he should push for MMA as an Olympic event. I think it's inevitable.

The men's 4 x 100m relay this morning was fucking fantastic. A great race.

That CBA commercial that keeps playing has a gorgeous red head waitress.
Re: Might as well rename it London 2012 pool side
Anything that is decided by a panel of judges is art. eg: gymnastics, synchronised swimming, diving.
Anything that can be measured objectively is sport. eg: a foot race, a game of soccer, high jump.
Just because something takes physical prowess doesn't mean it's sport. I acknowledge gymnastics takes a fucktonne of physical prowess to perform. So does Ballet. So does playing the tuba. None of them are sports though.
Subjectivity is injected into some sports via referees, but the overall scoring is objective (1 point per soccer goal, a 2 points for a bucket inside the circle in basketball). This subjectivity is unavoidable if rules that require interpretation are enforced. The coring is completely objective though (if a goal has been deemed to be scored, it is worth exactly 1 point).
Boxing as it stands is classed as an art if you go by the above classification. If they fought til someone got knocked out then it would be sport. Boxing has also been called a science - did they mean art?
At the expense of gymnastics, I say get rid of the arts and let the olympics represent the sports....
....you can't tell me it wouldn't make the olympics better if "pretty ponies" was abolished?
Either that, or introduce 'synchonised orchestra' and give the musicians a shot at a sporting medal since we're already giving them out to dancers and horse handlers....

Re: Might as well rename it London 2012 pool side
Actually Olympics boxing is scored on computers these days. Each punch scores you a point. No points for how effective your punches are, no points for aggression and no points for ring control. That's why it's so boring.

No points for Rocco then.Megaman wrote:No points for how effective your punches are, no points for aggression and no points for ring control.

Was the cartoon related to your comments? Did they miss the obvious Golden Girls TV reference?

See, that's what I'm thinking. I think they've managed to read it as gloating national pride.

Re: Might as well rename it London 2012 pool side
As did everyone else. Assuming that the cartoon above did a good job of misinterpreting it as well... because everyone knows the average HS reader wouldn't have known what to make of it otherwise.
(You are by *far* an above average HS reader, so there's no insult intended. Honest.)

Re: Might as well rename it London 2012 pool side
Ironically, you may have just invented a new sport.

In other news, New Zealand got another Gold yesterday, albeit, a week late....

I really feel for Adams. She nearly didn't make the competition after someone failed to enter her correctly which she stated did affect her mentally in preparation for the event. She then throws her own personal best (better than her Gold throw at Beijing) and it still beaten by almost a meter.

I got Lepo to text in a reply to myself to see if it'd go in too.
Raymond of Epping, you're right to want a constant reminder of our Golden Girls' great achievements. They carry the hopes and dreams of an entire nation on their shoulders.
