Re: The Board Game thread (Modern board gaming)
Yeah, sitting around a nice big table for a couple of games with some good mates is great. The feel of the wooden/plastic pieces in your hand. Looking over the board while you contemplate your next move. The smack talk. For me, it's so much more enjoyable than sitting in front of a screen playing video games with friends.
I just pulled the trigger on Pandemic. Looks/sounds awesome. Preordered the 2013 reprint from http://www.ozgameshop.com. Cheapest board games I've found online (free shipping).
I was leaning towards Prosperity but I'll do some homework re: Seaside and Hinterlands.
Side-note: We were playing a fair bit of Ticket to Ride and Settlers last year and I ended up buying 6 of these:
Really handy for games that involve lots of cards.

I played 7 Wonders not long ago and I really enjoyed it, but it can get a bit slow when people start thinking. Also it's easy to get confused when trading.

Not sure if you guys are aware but Wil Wheaton does a web series called table top where he and celebs play board games:Twiztid Elf wrote: Ticket to Ride.
Yeah, I know it's on XBLA, but you can't really play local multi player on XB.

Cheers for that. Good little show.

I've watched a few of those episodes now. This is probably my favourite:

I've watched quite a few myself. The show and Wil's enthusiasm has got me looking into buying a new board game. Might start a once a month board game night.

Is Tsuro the Dragon game? If so I want to buy it. It would be great if you have too many people for a board game and people want to play something else.

This. I ended up ordering a copy of Alhambra, thanks to Wil. It arrived yesterday.Cletus wrote:The show and Wil's enthusiasm has got me looking into buying a new board game.
I don't have the fancy pants version that they play in the video as I couldn't justify the cost, but my copy plays the same, so meh.
I've only played one game so far and it's pretty great. Definitely itching to play more.

The more I look the more I want to buy. Alhambra, Kemet, Carc, Catan, City of Horror. Even the BSG BG gets a hell of a lot of praise. I'll probably go a euro game first.

Just be careful with the BSG game. I hear that sessions can go for very long periods. There are other games that do the whole "who's the cylon?" thing and take way less time. BSG just adds in detailed missions.

Whoa! Sounds like someones caught the bug and is tumbling down the rabbit hole.Cletus wrote:The more I look the more I want to buy. Alhambra, Kemet, Carc, Catan, City of Horror. Even the BSG BG gets a hell of a lot of praise. I'll probably go a euro game first.
Like Grey says be cautious of playtime. Usually best to check boardgamegeek - it always shows an average game time in the game summary. I won't buy anything that is over 90 minutes to play. Based simply off the people I'm playing with (usually my kids or extended family who can have their arm twisted to be casual board gamers).
Having said that, I personally am hoping Reka comes through on his 'Arkham Horror' session sometime. I think that's 3hour+. (whoa! edit - make that 4 hours).
If it's hidden roles, spys, sleuthing, etc you're after, Resistance is considered the cream of the crop and plays very quickly. Takes a little while for people to get their heads around it, but once the penny drops, the game rules. Warewolf and Shadow Hunters are also good for this mechanic. Even Pandemic with the expansion (I think) - it has the bio-terrorist role of secretly sabotaging the other players.

Re: The Board Game thread (Modern board gaming)
Resistance is great but without the expansion it makes it near on impossible for the good guys to win. It's still fun and generates a lot of yelling and mistrust amongst friends.

Re: The Board Game thread (Modern board gaming)
Any recommendations for games that work well with 2 players? Me and the missus were looking at Carccasone and Catan but from my memory of playing on XBL they were better suited to 3 or more which sort of leaves out quite a few games I was looking at. They actually have quite a good selection of board and card games in one of the Westfield malls here, a few dozen of the more popular ones such as the two I mentioned, Ticket to Ride, Zombies!!! etc etc.

Carc is as good a one on one as it is multiplayer. You also learn far more in one on one games of Carc.

Re: The Board Game thread (Modern board gaming)
I would argue that Carc is actually better as a two player game. It reduces the luck factor of getting good tiles. As you get half the tiles, you're less likely getting screwed with constant road pieces like in multi. Also, meeple cnservation and placement is far more critical.

Yep. You kind of can't plan like you can in one on one. Multi throws a spanner in your custard most of the time.

Rofl @ that Alhambra video, the two guys bouncing off each other.

Like your fluke win in the GR comp. Two of us were trying to outsmart each other and Cletus swoops in to pick up the bread crumbs. Cletus cheats.Cletus wrote:Yep. You kind of can't plan like you can in one on one. Multi throws a spanner in your custard most of the time.

International Tabletop Day is this Saturday!
I've invited a bunch of people to my place for some board gaming goodness. Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday with friends and/or family.
http://www.tabletopday.com/index.phpOn March 30th, 2013, premium YouTube channel Geek & Sundry (The Guild, TableTop, Written By A Kid) asks all of our fans to go to their friendly local game store, community center, or host an event at home and play more games. International TableTop Day is a reminder to spend more time and strengthen the bonds with the people who matter most, our friends and family, by playing games together. Tabletop gaming promotes many positive social and cognitive benefits like increased communication, team work, planning, and is an excellent stress relieving activity for all ages.

Re: The Board Game thread (Modern board gaming)
Yeah it might not be a selling point but I won that comp with no idea how to play or what it was I did that outscored everyone else. The thing is nobody really knew how to play it at the time because it's uncommon that a complete noob would beat experienced players. It's taken Pep months to beat any of us. Thats with every kind of hint and helping hand we could throw at him. Now Pep is winning games completely through forethought and well considered gambles. You'd wonder why someone would bother trying to learn the game under those conditions and while I don't speak for Pep, I'm sure the pay off in even not completely losing is worth playing the game, let alone actually winning. Once you know how it works, it's a very even playing field. I can't speak highly enough of Carc. It can be friendly and it can be dirty.t0mby wrote:Like your fluke win in the GR comp. I went full retail on this edition of the big box. $120 Some expansions I'm familiar with, some not.
Good times.
