Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo released!
Thought I'd make a new thread for this, as part of winning best action game in that Intel competition we have been greenlit for release on Steam, and the game is now available!

The ONLY reason I haven't downloaded this yet is because I couldn't think of a good excuse to chuck a sickie today...

Re: Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo release
Try the Demo Sculli
And our game is completely DRM free so you're not even account locked GCF, once you buy it the files are just yours forever and you can copy/paste them wherever
, but you can re-download an infinite amount of times through steam on any PC you want.
Madmya get a controller! Should work with Logitech/360/PS3 controllers, you'll need a custom driver to use a PS3 pad though I think (to emulate xbox pad).

Yeah I know, the game would be infinitely more fun to play with a controller. Don't have any adaptors to play with a controller on my pc though!

Re: Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo release
Worth a try Sculli, it's lightweight... some of the loading screens didn't need to bother being loading screens.
Coral definitely my favourite so far. She looks cool and her weapons are both great fun. But I'm enjoying all of them to be honest. The different character weapons work well ... Holly, Starch and Coral especially bringing enjoyably different styles of play. I like that Holly doesn't feel easy, but more like a game of more manic running around than the others.
And the characters and animations themselves are just great actually. I love whatever the Starch comments are alluding too. The voice-over comments are just right; not too hype, not too dull, sci-fi feel without losing the "plainly delivering important information" vibe. I just really like how it doesn't go psycho about the batteries, even though you can be dying for it to tell you one's up. Just right. The dynamic tricks you guys have applied to the music, also very nice. The game's sound on the whole is just really nicely involved.
The trickiest part seems to be keeping a combo together between waves. I managed to drop only 6 on one level, using KBAM. I'm terrible with a pad, just haven't gotten used to twin sticks at all for anything, ever. My thumb keeps wanting to press A and B. Having said that, using the pad converts Holly from my lowest scorer to my highest scorer.
Anyway the best thing to say is that overall it is simply plain enjoyable. I just enjoy playing it over and over. The characters, the sound, the chaos, and the game itself... simply good stuff.

I have a pretty low end graphics card (Radeon Mobility HD 4570; can run starcraft II, SF4 at mid settings). I suppose you have no idea how the game might perform? Can the graphics be turned down for better frame rate?

Just bought it, can't wait to dig in. Congrats SJ! Maybe we can celebrate with some SF4
Re: Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo release
Boomy, I'm on a Radeon HD 3650. Runs at 1600x900 (laptop) without a hitch on the highest setting. So I'd say expect it to run perfectly.
@Sonic Jam, heh no, the thanks belongs to you. It's a good game and the balance is satisfying. Right now I am definitely in a "I need to get to the shops" moment, but I want to keep playing. Just killed the demo boss with Holly, let out a laugh at her reaction. But Starch is definitely the most amusing with that smartarse pumpkin crack. Honestly I think you've actually set up some pretty cool IP here.
Not trying to sound like a suck up but really enjoying the balance too. Coral kicks arse on the boss at first, then it's a nightmare chasing him around. Love how her special serves 2 purposes. Holly's fire is so weak against him but there she goes with the high score again (84, 576) and that weird-arse special. Lemon's special is great fun on the boss, just timing it to get the most solid hits out of her. Starch is literally built for that boss, while Cactus is maybe the trickiest (or Coral actually).

Re: Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo release
I've purchased it as well, and had a quick bash.
First impressions are I suck at modern twin stick shooters and Holly ably supports my complete noobness. Hold down fire, run around like a dickhead, kill stuff. It's giving me a very nice Robotron and Smash TV vibe amongst all the modern shooter flourishes.
Controls well, both the wired XBox controller and KBAM feel really nice. Looks good and runs smoothly on my shitty PC too.
Nice work..

Re: Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo release
Download the demo and give it a shot yourself, 122MB. It should run ok on that though, how does it compare to an Intel HD 4000 integrated solution? We have the Intel running the game at 60fps low settings at 720p. Running at 60 is kind of in the DNA of games like this and we try to make sure that's possibleBOOMY wrote:I have a pretty low end graphics card (Radeon Mobility HD 4570; can run starcraft II, SF4 at mid settings). You would destroy my soul these days, I have grown rusty and bad after my SF at work crew disbanded. Maybe when dev slows down a bit I'll give you a run for your money.Candy Arse wrote:Just bought it, can't wait to dig in. Congrats SJ! Maybe we can celebrate with some SF4
Starch is borderline OP against that bastard, but you don't get Starch until you beat him so it kind of evens out. And as you said, other characters actualy end up top scoring due to the speed of their damage output, so it all comes out in the wash if you're at the top end. Glad you're enjoying it so much, the second boss will make you cryDeef wrote: heh no, the thanks belongs to you. It's a good game and the balance is satisfying. I'll see what I can do, we're so far from finishing (well, 3 months at this stage of dev can feel like an eternity) that I can barely think about special easter eggs and such, plus somehow I have to work the word Cletus in to an enemy name! Not sure I'll be able to pull that request off. Any pad you have should work, except I guess wireless 360 without a receiver.jizzlobber wrote:I really need to get a pad sorted, I don't usually game on my lappy but this runs beautifully... Re: Assault Android Cactus Steam Early Access & Demo release
Purchased the early access Loving what I have played thus far, I dare say it will get a thrashing with some friends tomorrow night. We're always looking for some good local co-op stuff, and after the hundreds of hours we've put into Geometry Wars 2 some fresh gaming in a similar vein will be awesome. I noticed the way the music warps and slows down when you go down felt like a nice homage to the way Geometry Wars does it when you die.

110,263 on the first boss with Cactus. Finally got out of "D".
I keep surprising myself with who I do best with. Lemon broke Holly's highscore with 88K, now Cactus with 110K (her flamethrower is serious DPS). Starch seems built for that boss but yes to what you said about the damage output. I reckon Coral could still pull off the best time in the hands of an expert.
