Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Hi all,
The forum software has been upgraded to the latest phpbb, this has allowed us to use a new mobile optimised theme, so you'll find browsing on your phones will default to the new mobile view.
Also we've moved to using the html5 version of youtube, so you should be able to see embedded youtubes on your mobile now.
There will be minor differences due to minor changes in phpbb but if anyone notices something odd/broken please post it here and I'll check it out asap.
Eventually we plan to drop tapatalk support, so please embrace the new mobile view, it's faster and more secure.
Have fun!

There is a link to change to mobile view at the footer of the page.jizzlobber wrote:It isn't defaulting to mobile version for me... Awesome news though, it has been a prick to view GR on my mobile
Do you mind passing on what mobile browser you're using? So far I've tested ie on wp, chrome/firefox on android and they seem to work.

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Was working fine for me before on Opera (Not sure if if is Opera Mini or Opera Mobile for Android but it looked like Desktop but with word wrapping, posts and images fitted etc while using 'Off Road' mode) but now it looks all barebones and in order to view it like how it looks on the desktop I have to turn off 'Off Road' mode which means no data saved on compressed images. I was saving a couple of gb of mobile data a month the old way.
I bet "The Boss" is an Xbot! Pre order cancelled.

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Is there an option to choose which version of the site a user would prefer? I have my browser set to request desktop version but it still loads the mobile version

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Is there an option to choose a theme for the mobile version cause god damn it's ugly! Probably running on the Xbone.
Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
I'm very angry about this optional new feature on a forum that I don't pay for!

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Your browser must be still sending a browser string with "mobile" somewhere. You're doing this from a mobile browser in the first place I assume? The only way to toggle desktop view if you have a mobile browser is from the link on the footer, but I believe the code only keeps that for the current browsing session. This is the issue with auto detecting when browsing from different browsers/devices.GreyWizzard wrote:Is there an option to choose which version of the site a user would prefer? T0mby I tested the mobile site on opera with and without offroad mode, seems to work in offroad mode except for the rounding around buttons and elements, the popup elements force a page reload which is common for opera mini/offroad pages. Might need to clear your cache if it's coming up messed up.
I decided on a lighter theme for the mobile site because I feel it's easier to read in outdoors and a lot of mobile styling/design is moving towards white backgrounds, the elements are modern/metro which again is becoming prevalent in all mobile OS's. now. With the way autodetect works you won't be able to pick and chose nor am I going to support another mobile theme. Phpbb is a pain when updating because all mods/changes need to applied to all themes and a lot of it is done by hand because upgrade scripts won't attempt to update non standard themes.

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Is there no responsive option using a grid system instead of relying on old fashioned table layouts and switched out mobile specific css? Forum software seems very old fashioned.

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
In topic it looks fine. I think its just the forum views with the orange topic headings which looks a bit jarring against the blue/grey for everything else.
A dark theme option would be nice though.

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
Well we've reached the end of the line with 3.0 phpbb, 3.1 and onwards use an event/modular component model for mods/extensions, which means upgrading is a lot easier but it's still very new and there are hardly any mods/themes for it but we'll upgrade to it when it hits some maturity.Twit wrote:Is there no responsive option using a grid system instead of relying on old fashioned table layouts and switched out mobile specific css? Mavy I'm finding the orange helps me spot new posts and topics a lot easier, also it kinda goes with our sunset cowboy logo. It's only used for highlighting new posts. If you can come up with a shade you feel is easier on the eyes, post a screen grab here and I'll try and update the css for it.
*edit Mavy I found a orange tone that's not so neon, I think it looks better, check it out.

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
The theme isn't fantastic, losses all GR personality and feel which is also why I didn't like tapatalk.
Needs the gr logo and black/dark grey/orange theme

I think the different orange looks better too. At least its not sticking out at me like it was before (you didn't actually change it did you! ).
Only other thing might be the blue bubbles around the page numbers and other text under each topic heading. Looks a bit busy as you're scrolling. I see them first rather than the title of the topic. Maybe a light blue or orange or maybe a shade of grey for them instead?

Who the hell browses GR outdoors?lestat wrote: I decided on a lighter theme for the mobile site because I feel it's easier to read in outdoors
All good lestat, my earlier post was talking about the old way, not this new mobile version. People hate change.
This isn't bad, only real gripe now with this new mobile version is you can't see who posted last, worse when you open the page and find out it's GH that posted last.
*edit*
Off Road mode works with full site now, weird.

I'm not the biggest fan of Tapatalk but I hope support isn't dropped anytime soon. I find the forum easier to read and quicker to load on Tapatalk than the mobile site :/

Agreed those page/order count bubbles were too busy, toned them down now.Mavy wrote:I think the different orange looks better too. At least its not sticking out at me like it was before (you didn't actually change it did you! ).

Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
I get stats for how many people use tapatalk a month, so if people stop using it, I'll stop supporting it.Rorschach wrote:I'm not the biggest fan of Tapatalk but I hope support isn't dropped anytime soon. I find the forum easier to read and quicker to load on Tapatalk than the mobile site :/
I don't mind giving people choice, my only concern with tapatalk is board security.
Personally I find I'm using my browser a lot more than running tapatalk, so the idea is the mobile site is meant to be faster. Also the mobile site has access to board settings/admin etc that tapatalk doesn't expose well.
Re: Forum upgrade + new mobile theme
I could be swayed if there was an option to select a dark mobilesite theme. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place all this white is blinding.
Edit - speed is definitely much improved. Would love a dark theme though, that would flip me off Tapatalk

If you're using Dolphin on Android you can tell it to fake request whatever version of the site you want.

I've added a dark mobile theme, I hope you all like it.
