Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
I tried sending you a pm but it keeps on going to my outbox so I created this thread.
They have a new plan out for $90 ($10 cheaper if you have a mobile phone with them) unlimited internet, plus fetch tv with the entertainment package.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I've just noticed my sent PM messages are just sitting in the outbox too. How are people supposed to receive my sexts?

If it's anything like mine they will get sent later in the day, but I don't know why the stay in the outbox first.

Can't be. No one leaves a PM from Madmya unopened. Don't you know who I am?

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
I got the PMs in the end, thx to fipswitch I'm on the new plan. My fetchtv arrived yesterday but I need to wait till the new year until I can activate it once the new plan goes active.
Also discovered Optus increased my upload speed from 512kbit to 1.5mbit. Nice for game hosting, not related to plan recent plan changes I think.

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
The upload speeds in Australia are brutally slow. I get 10mbit here now, I think the max I got in Aus was 2mbit on my 100mbit Telstra plan.

That's strange, my uploads speeds went to 1.5Mbit when I changed to the 200GB plan in oct.

Upload speeds are fine I can have 100/40 if I want. I run 25/5 which is more than enough for anyone!

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
Cable traditionally wasn't designed for high upload speeds, I believe docsis 3.1 fixes that and allows nbn style 40mbit upload. With nbn taking over the hcf network we'll see a 3.1 upgrade down the line for sure.
Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
It's the same effing technology. It's just policy.lestat wrote:Cable traditionally wasn't designed for high upload speeds, I believe docsis 3.1 fixes that and allows nbn style 40mbit upload. With nbn taking over the hcf network we'll see a 3.1 upgrade down the line for sure.

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
Docsis 3.1 uses totally different channel spacing, increasing the number channels which helps with congestion. Because of the shared nature of cable, I believe they cripple upload to free up more channels to handle more subscribers which generally download more. Docsis 3.1 due to more channels will allow 40mbit upload to be a reality.DOCSIS 3.1Released October 2013, plans support capacities of at least 10 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream using 4096 QAM. The new specs will do away with 6 MHz and 8 MHz wide channel spacing and instead use smaller (20 kHz to 50 kHz wide) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers; these can be bonded inside a block spectrum that could end up being about 200 MHz wide.[5]
Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
Lestat - all I'm saying is cable in the U.S. allows for faster uploads using the same technology. That's it. I even got the same cable modem here as back in aus. Having a 1/2mbit limit on cable in aus was strictly policy driven, nothing to do with the technology. 40mbit would be nice, sure, but it's already 5-10x slower unnecessarily.

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
Yeah I agree the 512k upload speed was unnecessary and policy driven. It was 256k at one point. Curious what upload you get now?
Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
I get 10mbit. Ugh I'd forgotten about 256/512kbit uploads, I was on 1mbit when I went to Telstra, which I think was 2mbit, not sure.
Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
10mbit is damn nice btw, I can easily stream all my movies from my house while I'm away, easily do online backups, etc. More would be nice, but it's such a huge improvement over what I had in oz.

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
The wording on this new plan implies the cable premium speed should be included if you have a docsis 3.0 modem. Quite a few people at whirlpool got it included.
I was just on the phone with Optus sales and argued these points and brought up my loyalty, 20 year customer here. So I have the 100mbit included now.
Probably worth giving sales a call for others in the same situation.

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
I got my Telstra cable today since the ASDL where I've moved to is hopeless. Wish I hadn't waited so long. Only downside is the supplied modem has horrific wifi but I can bridge it with my Billion and it's fine

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
I got the Optus unlimited with fetch tv. Modem is balls but I didn't understand what the tech wanted. He kept saying it had to be with a power point on an outer wall. So my brain just says the main bedroom. I mean wtf?? So now I have a shit router at one end of the house no where near anything. I set up my old modem as a wireless access point. I could chuck the billion in the middle of the house in bridge mode but meh... Two access points are fine... except that kitkat 4.2.2 has some shitty issue with dhcp clients so my wife has t connect in the bedroom and then reconnect in the living room so it can get the dns entries... Fuck knows why... If you root the phone you can get it to fuck the held dns details off. But yeah that isn't going to happen.
Honestly it doesn't seem much faster than ADSL2 with tpg...

So I sign up for Telstra cable and the next night the whole of Sydney suffers a massive network outage

Just a heads up, you've got until or before? The 6th of April before the price goes back up.

Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
Telstra doubled my quota, now have 1TB a month
Re: Attn: lestat and optus cable users on unlimited data.
At that point, shouldn't they just switch to unlimited? I go crazy with my downloading and uploading but 'only' use 500gb a month, have never cracked 700gb.
Have they fixed upload speeds in Aus yet?
