I jizz all over my surface 3... Youporn baby.
Plus I just love the thing, I think it's a wonderful bit of kit, which is why everyone is now making surface knock offs.

After suffering from Surface Envy since the Pro 3 released I pulled the trigger on a SP4 i5/8gb/256 should be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait.

Lucky bugger... enjoy!
Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Would love a Surface but the price is well and truly out my league for what it is, would rather buy a decent laptop with a discrete GPU. Still, great form factor and power in the hand

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Surface Books look awesome but if I was going to spend that much I'd buy a gaming PC. The most expensive Surface Book on JB's website actually costs more than what I paid for my beast of a PC

The price point that MS seem to think is acceptable is a bit fucking stupid I think.
If you are serious about doing work.. you get a desktop.

And then when you add the cost of a monitor, keyboard and mouse, docking station etc

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
I have a laptop that I have at home.. only because I caved and got one as I was told it would be AWESOME.. and it hasn't been the worst.. but I'd prefer a desktop for my next purchase.. I have work PCs.. and I have a tablet if I ultimately need to do emails or check the net for anything if I was on the go somewhere..
Money on building a kick arse Desktop and having the ability to customise it with exactly what I want is the way to go in the new FY!

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Yup, desktop for home, windows tablet for any potential mobility requirements. Laptops are a huge waste of money nowadays, IMO.
Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Yep, an entry level i5 runs almost $1500 up to $4200 for a top of the line Surface Book. Crazy. Either amount of money would pay for an epic desktop build.GeneraL CyberFunK wrote:The price point that MS seem to think is acceptable is a bit fucking stupid I think.

I would probably get a Metabox down the track to have some mobility and power and half the price of a Surface.

Desktop and tablet combo for me too.
I use my phone a lot more than my tablet though.

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Yeah if you're going to drop $3k on one of these things you need it to really work for you. I'd agree that desktops are best for work but portability is a huge factor for me which rules them out. I actually use the tablet mode for drawing diagrams and jotting stuff down that I want a copy of permanently as well. That is a feature that separates them from normal laptops. I'm going the Book over the Pro because I'd love a discrete GPU purely for dabbling in games, mostly the odd game of starcraft but likely others too. That, and an extra USB port is gold.

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
What about this plus a custom-built gaming PC for ~$2200 from somewhere like https://www.ple.com.au/
PLE are a Perth-based company (with a store in Melbourne) but I'm sure Brisbane have an equivalent. I bought my PC there and it worked out cheaper having them put it all together professionally (seriously, their cable management etc is incredible) than it would have been for me to do it all myself (and probably stuff up) Having a local warranty etc helps for peace of mind too!

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
That's an option, though the Surface 3 isn't up to what I do which is a lot of CPU-intensive stuff. I'd be better off keeping my current Surface Pro than going to a Surface 3. But the desktop option just isn't there. If I really wanted a desktop I'd probably already have one because I can afford it. What I can't afford is the time for PC gaming to justify one, and I currently think it's ridiculous paying $2k purely for a games machine when the bone and Wii U are perfectly capable. If it were work-oriented as well...
If I really wanted to cut down the cost I'd simply go the Surface Pro 4, i7, 256 GB. That extra bit of oomph from the GPU for Starcraft 2 and The Witness, an extra USB port, SD card reader and better form factor is making me fork out the extra $1k. Plus, it looks like a fantastic little device.

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
We use laptops at work. Part of a big BYOD push. We're allowed to do whatever we want with them, install whatever we want etc because when it comes to doing work, they're basically dumb terminals. A portable screen. We log into a remote desktop in Canberra with a secure connection via Citrix, where our work is actually done. It means we can also log in from home and work from home using our own PCs or laptops or whatever. The public service being dragged into the 21st century!
Would you be able to set something like that up with a cheapish Windows 10 tablet and a decent PC? I do something similar at home, I have my old Dell PC in the corner I use as a games server, I log into it via Remote Desktop Connection (built into Windows).
Just thinking outside the square
Of course go for the Surface Book if your heart is set on it, it looks beautiful. Film an unboxing video

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
I could do that but then I'm at the mercy of my internet at home - no NBN. I've also severely limited my places of work to where I have Wi-Fi access, it's not ideal in this situation. Dammit Ambrose, I'm getting a surface book. It just works for me.

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Only if you think you need something portable. Otherwise you're always going to use the desktop first.
I don't think you'd be disappointed with a cheap Surface Pro 3. If not, you could probably sell it again for more than your boss gave it to you.

Re: So how about that Microsoft Surface?
Yeah I'd say so. I used my first gen at uni and thought it was great, the 3rd gen is a lot better. There won't be a problem with software compatibility (students can get MS Office pretty cheap too), and for me the pen was useful in that you didn't have to print pdfs - just scribble on them. That last point mightn't be easier than the old fashioned way though, sometimes it didn't work well.
