This is the quality game I noticed kids playing the other day. Another rags to riches iOS game that's either free with ads or a couple of dollars for ad free. The mobile gaming market today.

Dedicated handheld gaming devices as we've grown up with them...their day is over.
You are clueless. Imagine all those monster hunter fans playing on touchscreen or trying to do combos in fighters on touch pads? I get it, the phones are popular but the core gamers really don't give a fuck about how popular the non-game platforms are. It's sorta like the situation with ea sports titles. People will go where the franchise is. When EA abandoned the dc, they let sony win.

PC and phones are for non-gamers too cheap to buy dedicated game system. The ones that are not too cheap become dedicated customers. If you want crap quality buy a phone. But don't cry if its not as fun to play shovel knight or galak-z on touchscreen. Action games need buttons. Dedicated game systems won't be replaced, it's just that the west likes home console more and sees handhelds as kids toys.

Terraria on vita controls great. MVC3 controls great. Once you abandon us hardcore gamers who already have a phone, the quality of the games will turn to shit. Sure you could play animal crossing on touchscreen fine. I'm talking about those games that rely on action. Your kids need to stop trying to look like yuppies and just get a fucking part time job at ebgames selling used games like they did to buy a ps3 and play dumb final fantasy rpgs. Throw out the phone and play REAL games. Trade in your iphone for psvita at ebgames. If every non-gaming kid did that sony could port shenmue 3 to vita. Also encourage the kid to beat up apple fans on public transport to convert them to dedicated game systems which are not spying on you for the nsa and selling your sexting pics to pedophiles for huge profits.

Money is tight. You gotta save up. Don't waste it on shit $2 virtual items. Buy whole games that are cheap (mainly due to age only) but quality. This wil demonstrate what it is like to play fun deep titles and they may grow up to be the next shigeru miyamoto once they are exposed to proper titles. Start them on esy shit like kirby and then go to mario and donkey kong. Then show them the differences in depth between one game vs another. Games are designed to be too easy thanks to these kids not developing skills. Apple wants to feminise men by killing off dedicated gaming systems. Show these little shits why megaman is not a kids game.

Precisely. :D

I think Nintendo's future dedicated handheld gaming/mobile phone gaming expansion strategy is very clever. They have confirmed only 5 mobile phone games will be released by the end of 2017, and have already unveiled two of them (Pokémon Shuffle Mobile & Pokémon Go). I'm guessing a Mario and Animal Crossing puzzle game are amongst the 3 games left.

These aren't fully-fledged games (like say a Pokemon X/Y) - but instead free to play (with a shitload of in-app purchases) "teaser games" to give people a taste of the "Nintendo Magic", and entice them to purchase a Nintendo gaming system (which is what Nintendo have already said their mobile phone expansion strategy is about).

The fact of the matter is the 3DS has sold millions upon millions more units than PS4, XB1, & Wii U combined.

In total, a massive 55 million 3DS's have been sold (and note the 3DS was dead on arrival and a colossal flop it's first year), and 40 3DS games (mostly developed from Nintendo) have sold over a million copies.

In fact, not a single game on PS4/XB1/Wii U has sold more than 7 million copies - yet the 3DS has multiple games that have sold more than 10 million copies each.

This handheld gaming generation has clearly shown that almost 70 million people (the combined figure for 3DS/PSV sold units) were happy to spend hundreds of dollars for a dedicated handheld gaming system and drop down 60 bucks per game.

There will always be a significant market for dedicated handheld gaming (Japan's gaming market for instance is dominated by 3DS/PSV handheld gaming - and NOT consoles), because there will always be tens of millions of people that want to play (& clearly willing to pay for) fully fledged handheld versions of big franchise games (with actual real controls) like Mario/Pokemon/Monster Hunter/Metal Gear Solid/Zelda/Final Fantasy/Fire Emblem etc.

With Sony out of the picture - Nintendo is now going to have a global monopoly of the dedicated handheld gaming market (literally no competition whatsoever) - and with that kind of power, you would have to be delusional to not think Nintendo are going to work their magic and use it to their advantage.

Nintendo's executives in Kyoto must be laughing their heads off - especially knowing that going forward they are literally going to control 100% of the lucrative dedicated handheld gaming market in their motherland of Japan.

Hey I think gaming on mobile phones is fucking retarded, but clearly Nintendo do not hence their slow march towards being top dogs in mobile phone gaming. I just hope they don't forget about putting their fine games on Steam as well once they do go 3rd party.

Re: SONY DUMPS HANDHELD GAMING - CONFIRM NO SUCCESSOR TO PS

Post by Jasper »

Following Sony's exit from the handheld gaming industry, a new article that sheds light as to why PSP/Vita has failed...

WHY ONLY NINTENDO UNDERSTANDS HANDHELD GAMING"

At the EGX video games festival in Birmingham, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, took to the stage and essentially confirmed that there will not be a follow-up to the PlayStation Vita handheld console. “The climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming,” he lamented.

But is this true?

When the smartphone started its inexorable rise as a gaming platform, thanks mostly to the launch of the iPhone in 2007, business pundits were leaping over each other to declare the imminent death of the specialist games console. Why would people pay hundreds of pounds for a dedicated games machine if they were effectively carrying one around in their pockets all day? And then the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One arrived, shifting tens of millions of units, selling faster than their predecessors and generally doing okay.

As for the handheld gaming sector, the area of gaming surely most at risk from mobile phones ... well, the Nintendo 3DS has now sold over 50m units, putting it within a whisker of the top ten best-selling games platforms of all time. It hasn’t done as well as the Nintendo DS, of course (150m sales), but then, the DS has been on sale for over a decade and the 3DS has only been out for four years – and it arrived in a very different, much more fragmented and diverse, market place. Unlike Vita, however, it ignored most of its competition – from internet-connected consoles, to smartphones and tablets – and did its own thing.

Doing its own thing is something Nintendo has always understood, and why it has utterly dominated the handheld gaming sector. There were certainly other companies vying for a portion of the market when portable electronic games first started appearing in the late seventies, but it was Nintendo – or more specifically legendary industrial designer Gunpei Yokoi – that realised form factor, price, battery life and cuteness were going to be the defining features of a successful product.

The Game & Watch games were super simple, based on very cheap LCD screens, but they looked lovely, they were sturdy and they were cheap. When the GameBoy arrived in 1989, its monochrome display looked out of step with the wondrous visuals of the 16bit console era, but again, the tech was inexpensive and sturdy, and the games (Tetris, Super Mario Land, et al) exploited the limitations in an entirely loveable way. The combination of portability and kawaii design sensibilities meant that people actively enjoyed taking these things around with them and showing them to others.

Nintendo knew almost instinctively that we would think of miniature games as endearing. There is just something about the reduced form factor that allows us to enjoy child-like experiences without feeling self-conscious. The industrial design legend Donald Norman talks about how humans project a series of expectations onto objects, and how designers need to understand these in order to make successful products. In short: we kind of want small things to be cute – and Nintendo gets that.

But Nintendo’s rivals have usually made the error of thinking that to compete with Nintendo they had to beat it in terms of technology. The Neo Geo Pocket and Bandai Wonderswan totally understood the appeal of cuteness, but they were largely restricted to the Japanese market. In terms of global competitors – from the Sega Game Gear, through the Atari Lynx to the PlayStation Portable and Vita – the philosophy has been “bringing the home console experience to your pocket”. Not only has that proved costly to the consumer in terms of retail price and battery life, it grates against what a lot of people want from a portable experience.

Sometimes, as a race, we allow ourselves to be loveable. It doesn’t happen much and we often have to express it in quite obtuse ways – through novelty socks, or action figure collections, or really liking Pixar movies. Portable games fit into this mode of thinking. The most successful handheld franchises – Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Cooking Mama, Professor Layton – they’re all reasonably complex experiences, but they’re also really, really cute. They fit the form factor – both physically and psychologically.

The PlayStation Portable wasn’t cute. Vita isn’t cute. Both tried to compete, in industrial design terms, with home consoles and with smartphones, dropping into an awkward aesthetic space between the two. When gamers first saw Ridge Racer on the Sony PSP they gasped in wonder – a true console experience on the go – but it turned out that not many people wanted that; not just because PSP was more expensive, but because (to a lot of people) it just felt weird to sit on a bus with this ostentatious piece of cold, sleek gaming technology.

The idea of the Vita as a mini PlayStation 3 or 4 has stifled the creativity of developers. Stunted compromised spin-offs of major console titles like Uncharted and Call of Duty have done very little except underline the differences between a home machine and a portable gadget. They didn’t work. It’s no coincidence that the most successful series on Sony’s handheld machines – Monster Hunter – is very much in the Nintendo mould of highly sociable titles with childlike collection systems.

Sony has tried to innovate in hardware terms with OLED screens, proprietary memory card formats, proprietary optical discs and strange touch pads underneath the display. But these have usually been ignored by developers and read by consumers as a way to gouge more money from them. The philosophy of the home console race cannot be applied to the portable market because the consumer mindset is totally different. Sony may have had more success if it had really, really pushed the product as a homebase for offbeat experiments and indie projects – there have certainly been plenty of those along the way. But the marketing attention was often elsewhere.

The GameBoy, the DS and the 3DS haven’t just dominated this sector because they got the basics right – battery life, cost and sturdiness – they dominated because Nintendo understands that small things are cute and that cuteness pervades the whole experience. This is exactly what’s going on in the smartphone sector with Candy Crush, Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds. Bringing a game like Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer into work or school is a very specific experience that has nothing to do with technology or gadgetry.

The Vita hasn’t really struggled because of mobile games, it has struggled because people don’t want to hug it.

There is also the fact that gaming evolves. If you have one hit series that people are addicted to as it uses new systems, and it is exclusive, then it can force them to buy that system to experience the unique thing it does. It's up to dvelopers here to break from formula and innovate. This then adds value to that system. For instance I like psp power over the ds because games on psp might not have been possible on the ds. But are there enough people like me? This is where they got to think about content and how fresh it feels not the technology behind it. When games like mario 7 came out on 3ds, it didn't matter if it was good. People saw it as more of the same. Franchise fatigue.

Nintendo responds to franchise fatigue more than other companies by trying to mix things up. This is why other companies fail. They don't try to achieve beyond the immediate goal. The immediate goal might be to make sequels to popular things but if they don't break formula the competition will catch up. I guess that's where the indies come into it. As much as I like say the lego games, only the wii u exclusive lego city freshened things up. They are a formula now. Still fun but over time you lose people as interest lessens with each game. When more and more games flood the shelves looking the same, you have hs overall effect of games blending together too much. You don't want that. You want each game to almost be mysterious with stuff you never saw before. Expansion packs and dlc is one way to mix things up, but games that do different things get more attention since they are pioneering and they stay in your memory longer because they dont blend in to everything else of its time. They create whole genres of games.

Doing what's easy and obvious makes sense in the short term (people are creatures of habit) but you need ambition to see where we are going ten to fifteen years from now. (notice how the gameplay of most games today hasn't changed much this gen from last gen? Because they just want to upgrade visuals which is easy to do. No imagination needed, the tech is the selling point) People get smarter and more discerning so they wait for things to go down in price because they know the market is so flooded with me-too software. Even if that me-too game is actually good they are aware of how many other games are like it so they are not as interested on day 1 to rush out like crazy to be the first to experience it. Hapens to all game series. Mixing up the gameplay preserves the games from franchise fatigue. Reviewers now criticse games being too long and with too much to do. This was unheard of during the 16 bt days when games were fucking expensive and memory was limited. Now they complain games have too much value? lol Because of flooding the market of me-too. You need to be ambitious with long term visions.

SONY CONFIRM THEY HAVE CEASED ALL PS VITA GAME DEVELOPMENT!

Post by Jasper »

In addition to confirming that they've dumped handheld gaming & there will be no successor to PS Vita, Sony have now confirmed they have stopped developing Vita games!

SONY HAS 'NO TITLES IN DEVELOPMENT FOR PS VITA'

Image

Just last month, Sony said that a PS Vita sequel was unlikely given that there’s no market for the device. If that didn’t spell doom for the somewhat forgotten handheld, this almost certainly does: Sony is ceasing all first party development for the PS Vita.

In an interview, Sony Computer Entertainment SVP Masayasu Ito stated that first-party studios have no Vita games in development, and that the company is shifting focus to the PS4.

I just applied this thing known as 'common sense'. Sony are abandoning Vita, 3rd parties aren't. Nintendo are abandoning Wii U, 3rd parties abandoned Wii U 5 minutes after it hit the shelves.

Stands to reason Vita will outlast the Wii U, wouldn't you agree?

Sony haven't really abandoned it. The vita is alive in asian game scene. They just want you to use it as off tv play system to clone wii u tablet. This way ur mom can watch tv while banging pc gamers playing emulated roms on the tiny monitor on the coffee table so everyone in the living room can multitask. This is the future. People watch tv, play games, send sext messages on phones while fucking thier pets and posting on game forums about which platform is winning.

If you don't own a tv because you sold it to upgrade your pc graphics card, you can use vita to still play games. It's alive. Just part of ps4 now. Genius move to let kids play games without hogging the tv. No need to buy minecraft or terraria on pc. So dad can view his pirated movies and porn without distraction. Don't be jealous of console game companies just because they are innovative while pc only reacts to trends. Half the shit on pc is doable on consoles with superior controls. Divine Divinity is way better as a console game on couch in splitscreen you douche.

Candy Arse predictions proven false:

This game is to indie retro gaming what super metroid was to SNES.

Suck on that desktop fanboy.

Cross buy too which means if you bought it already you get it free on Vita. This game also helped a family man be there for his son. So if you didn't buy this shit, shame on you.

Wii U version is also being made.

Bought Odin Sphere on cartridge today from the local Ebgames store:
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstat ... eifthrasir" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
metacritic rating of 9 from users.
apparently this game has had improvements since the original ps2 release.

Vita is not dead yet. This and Muramasa rebirth make being a vita owner awesome.

remake of the first secret of mana game was also recently released (more for the tree huggers) on vita too:
might download that digitially. That should have come to 3ds not vita.

Garou Mark of the Wolves coming to ps4 and Vita:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016- ... 4-and-vita" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

great news for those who like to play the old games on portables. The nice vita dpad makes this a perfect match.
Recently bought last blade 2 on the psn shop.

When is SNK going to be as good as Arc System Works and use nice cel shading on all their future fighting games with unreal engine 3?

Let capcom do the realistic lighting and shadows crap, and you do the anime colored style. Much prefer that to the plastic looking 3D CG graphics style...

for those who haven't bought it yet Last Blade 2 is out:
if you own a vita I recommend it. You want to help these guys create new sequels to old games? vote with your wallet even if you already bought it 10 times already on previous machines :)

I wish capcom had the sense to port SF3 series on portables too. (already downloaded the old PSP port of Street Fighter Alpha 3) Vita has great dpad for retro arcade fighting games. But noo they are too busy killing megaman and not telling us what happened to Deep Down on ps4.

Reviews of trails of cold steel II are out and it is awarded masterpiece label:
This series is considered a JRPG equivalent of bethesda or bioware rpgs in terms of world building and interesting characters.

Will pick this one up soon. Recently bought Dragon Quest 8 for 3DS. However I would recommend you start on Trails of Cold Steel I first.
Good to see Vita still the best place for the JRPG. If it weren't for the plain looking graphics it would probably be more well known like the other series like final fantasy games.

Vita still kicking butt as release of Steamworld Dig 2 shows the quality of games still coming out is good (3DS still has no port of this which to me is a little strange given that Steamworld Heist was on there):

review of Steamworld Dig 2 (mostly positive as it sticks to the formula this time instead of changing the game into a "x-com from the side view" title):
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... g-2-review" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also for those who are looking for a good JRPG I would recommend YS Origins (recent release this year - amazing gameplay and used to be steam game until it got ported) and the just-released YSVIII

If you love action RPG game with quick combat and skill-based action that rewards you for practice then you can't really get much better than YS.

metacritic reviews:
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstat ... sa-of-dana" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Having said that: these games tend to have dated look to them and most would agree they are much more suited to a portable screen but it is worth mentioning that if you buy YSVIII on ps4 you are getting more content and up-resed visuals so if you can only have one version that is the definitive release for now.

It seems a lot of the games that are highly rated have dated graphics hehe
Zelda BOTW (wii U generation visuals)
Persona 5 (ps3 game)
YS VIII (looks like ps2 late gen game or early ps3 game haha)
Xenblade X chronicles (ps2 level npc in interesting backgrounds)

If capcom can get away with it (MVC Infinite looks like a mobile phone game) and SNK can get away with it (KOF14 looked like ps2 fighter on launch) for their fighting games then it shouldn't matter for these other guys.
