This is awesome. Almost 20 years of trying to force the 3D shit, and making a horde of terrible games, only for them to go "Fuck it, just re-do the originals"
...will buy.
...will buy.

Correction: ALMOST completely shit-baked.
Re: Sonic Wub Wub
I was under-impressed by Studiopolis the first time I saw it, but every time I catch a shot of it the zone just looks better and better. And the music is all over Sonic CD.
The GHZ remake is interesting in that it's not a new zone with GHZ theming, it's actually GHZ that you first played in 1991 but hugely buffed. I wasn't expecting that, and it's kinda cool.
It's been confirmed to have more levels than Generations, and mini-bosses per act. Apparently GHZ is the most conservative of the re-done zones also.

Fucking gold. Looks like Green Hill Zones 1+2 have been merged together, I like. Music rocks, animations rock, physics looks perfect. I'm balls deep. Did I mention I'm balls deep?
Edit: What's with getting some douche to describe the gameplay who can't even recognise changes from the original GHZ? Then makes the comment that the original Sonic doesn't play well, but this game would hardly be different to it (in GHZ).

There is always Freedom Planet 2 (AKA the sonic alternate universe after the chaos gems decided to say 'fuck you Sega!' and disappeared and created a new reality): Stop being so gloomy.Candy Arse wrote:Not like you've got much else to look forward to with your football team completely shitbaked

Anyway, looks awesome. Can't wait.
I hope there are a lot of new stages. Studiopolis music is amazing.
Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Many were guessing it will probably be half n half... Like S1 new SCD new S2 new S3 new SK new, to top out the amount in Generations.
Also can't wait. Actually legit Sonic game hype. Crazy.

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Sonic Mania uses Sonic CD jumping; ie, no control lock if you jump from a roll. So even if the insta-shield was in Mania (it isn't), its whole control-unlock perk would be useless now anyway.
The drop-dash apparently charges the same amount no matter how long you're holding it for while airborne.
With the CD style jumping, and the drop-dash providing easier spin-dashes, Mania is going to feel a lot freer than Sonic 3 I think.

It's very pleasing to know that they are using a decent physics engine.

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Without a doubt. It has such a perfect blend of all the 16bit Sonic games.
The only thing I don't like.. and it's such a tiny thing.. I don't like how often he turns into a blue sphere. It's one of the frames of animation from the original roll/jump.. but it looks odd being so obvious now.
But seriously.. if that's all I have to gripe about.. that is pretty fucking amazing.
Will this indeed be the sonic cycle combo breaker?

Nothing can possibly be as perfect as this game looks. It's going to be rubbish.
The music is fucking en pointe. I wonder if they got the original Sonic CD composer in for this?

I read somewhere that their premise for this was "what if Sega had made a 2D Sonic for the Saturn?"
I wholeheartedly approve of this idea. The extra colours and frames of animation are sublime.

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Yeah I read that too. Completely perfect way of approaching it I reckon.
As for the music composer.. Hmm I didn't get any Sonic CD vibes from the music initially but I'm certainly hearing some now that I have a closer listen. Thankfully it's the JP soundtrack too I'm really glad there are so many nods to to Sonic CD though.. it's always been forgotten about!

The music is very hit and miss for me. I love love love Studiopolis' music, love that whole level actually, but the title screen music is lame.
They did state who the music was by... somewhere. Sounded more like a young person than whoever did Sonic CD's music. Had a name like Disasterpeace for Fez, which is just one dude I think.

I think it's probably best to think of this as a fan game. That way, if it's rubbish, we don't feel too ripped off. If it's great, we can go "WHY CAN'T SONIC TEAM DO THIS??" again..

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Whoops, it was just the trailer music (which I wasn't a fan of either).
Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Pretty much all the Mania team is from the fan community. The music is by Tee Lopes; he did the music for that Sonic 2 HD demo y'all thought was a virus. He seems to be pretty good at lifting old tunes into modern quality/instrumentation. I don't really know/pay attention to composers, but if I was building a dream team for a new Sonic title, he would be in it. Sonic Mania kinda nailed all of that for me heh.

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
one thing that kinda bugs me is that the MegaDrive relied on CRT screens to produce some interesting visual effects. The weird patterns in the water you see in emulators and in the Taxman re-releases? On a CRT television, they make the water look transparent and ripply (check it out in Kega Fusion by turning on CRT emulation. Sonic 2 looks especially great). Sonic Mania is missing a golden opportunity to show us just how amazing that looks, while avoiding all the other problems with CRT-quality visuals.
