After 2+ decades of shoving SHIT into our faces and trying to reinvent the wheel so many times, they appear to have gotten it SPOT ON by just doing what made it good in the first place. 2D side scrolling.Scullibundo wrote:New level from Sonic Mania: Mirage Saloon:

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
Initially I wasn't in love with Knuckles' artwork, but it's starting to grow on me, helped in no small part by just how much smoother all the animation is. I didn't notice it so much with Sonic's sprite, but with Tails and Knuckles it really jumped out at me. ... Although Tails lifting-Sonic animation looks a bit sinister.
Even the rings' animation is super smooth. Noice.
The aesthetic of the level doesn't really blow me away; none of the Mania levels in fact. GHZ still looks and sounds better than Studiopolis and Mirage Hill in my opinion.
BUT, the level design does leave me completely satisfied. They appear to be nailing that. I can't speak for the layering and wotnot, but the number of junctions and the way lots of separate pieces are chaining together looks really good. Lots of speed but lots of options. It also seems to less blocky than the Megadrive titles, as in, the connecting ramps, quarterpipes, ceilings and such all appear to be a lot more freeform in their placement. And then there's the gimmicks; they really did well. Love the piano keys, love the spritzer. Oh and love that Spring Yard-inspired badnik! The way it moves around the environment so much, it already appears to be the most playful badnik I've seen. Nice.
At first I wasn't really buying into the "This is what a Saturn classic Sonic would be", but the steps up in quality above Sonic 3 are showing. I'm not yet convinced this will beat S3&K though (as that is sounding like their goal).
Overall the pros are easily outweighing the small niggles I might have.

Re: Sonic Wub Wub
This is what happens candy when sega went third party. The old games that made them relevent are forgotten by the company and quality dips. Now that fans have saved sega, they can get some respect back again.
This is why people do not like you saying nintendo should just go third party like sega. Quality will dip and gameplay will change. That's why your boyfriend rocco left GR and you are depressed.
Sega realises fans from the older gen matter and are asking what franchises should be dug up. It's a good time to be a sega fan again. Maybe one day like duke nukem forever being released, sega will finally port PSO2 to vita instead of just letting ugly, smelly, balding, mouse-clicking pc gamers have it?

New trailer up. I'm on my phone, so I can't link to it, but it looks great. We've got a date now though; August 15!

From what I can tell..
Sonic can't talk in this game
The friends are limited to Tails and Knuckles.
This instantly makes it a break in the cycle.

Thinking that is PART of the cycle!
I like the way the trailer implies that it's the real Sonic 4, right at the end.

I'm doing a rubbish job of staying on blackout for this. Hearing that split screen is a thing and Stardust Speedway is CD's showing... both awesome news, but spoilt it for myself doh. I would've flipped out to discover Stardust Speedway on a playthrough. Oh well, I have no idea what changes it'll have at least.
The whole animation thing is amazing too. Sonic Mania is really pulling out all the stops; that's probably the best part. It's not just a good reminder of S3&K... it is every good bit included, nothing forgotten. Well... I guess it could have time travel but that'd be asking too much.
Really hope Mania 2 becomes a thing.
August 15th... :D
