Xbox 720p and PS4fps

Post by Peppermint Lounge »

A stock RX480 isn't running Forza at ultra, 4K and 60fps though. It's uneconomical to put today's top shelf GPUs into a $600 box. Looks like MS have done something pretty amazing to build a fixed Jaguar/Polaris hardware platform that delivers meaningful 4k. If they can do it and not burn themselves with expensive silicon then credit to them.

One thing that stood out to me in the screenshot is the use of 4x2 EQAA. PC version uses MSAA which is more costly. Ultra on PC uses 4xMSAA. EQAA is supposed to deliver similar quality to 4xMSAA but at 2xMSAA performance level.

When upgrading to a newer console, does anybody else get sick of thinking ' where am I going to put the older console'?
In other words, I'm running out of spots to put them. So what do you do with yours? Sell it, give it to someone, put it in your drawer, hide it somewhere?

It almost pushes me to go PC exclusively because I still have my old games from late last century to this day, and they only require 1 pc ( my current pc) to play them.

I always sell it off for nothing at the end of each gen...a little after maybe. I generally would never go back and play old games. No interest. I did keep the 360 though. It's the only one and I really don't need it but it might be handy at some point. I kept it because it can play all of the gta games I thought I'd need a console to play. But I have them all on Steam anyway, I think. And I'd probably only want to play San Andreas if anything.

Anyway, I get rid of them. They serve me no purpose.

Yes was thinking the same thing. I still have the 360 connected but have not turned it on while I have the PS4 sitting on top of the Xbox One. PS3 is in the draw under the 360.

PC is no different. I have a cupboard full of old parts. Most of the time when I go to upgrade I need to replace CPU, mb, ram and graphics card. The only thing I've kept the same in the past 15 years is the case, keyboard and mouse!

Now that Xbox One has BC I should pack away the 360. Not that I've really made use of BC anyway.

Yep, I have been loving my new home in PC land for this reason. Every generation of gaming is available on this machine, I feel I play what I actually want to play more often as I'm not bound by the idea of playing something 'for' my new console.

I can relate to feeling sick thinking where I am going to put a console. Its more the mental real estate than physical. Therefore my old consoles go in and out of storage. They often end up setup in some secondary entertainment area; At the moment I have my megadrive setup in the shed to accompany jams and beers. Most recently with the 360, I just culled all the games I wouldn't go back to and have retired it for the moment. I nicked the monitor from that setup for my PC so it sits there unplugged where it lay the day I bought my computer and hasn't been packed away yet; neglected and forgotten. 360 will probably end up in a mame cabinet, as a media centre or some other utilitarian fate eventually.

I can see myself staying with Sony for their exclusives but all of the Xbone stuff is making its way to the PC. I managed to sell my Dreamcast collection for a reasonable price but I don't think it's worth keeping old consoles, hardware just ends up failing and then the software is useless. Everything should be on PC simply for preservation.

I usually sell them. I sold my WiiU (and a heap of stuff) to Reka at mates rates.
Looking critically at the WiiU, with MK8 and Splatoon both on the Switch (and Smash likely), the only games left that I'd likely re-play are Bayonetta 1 and 2 (but I still have my 360 version of 1), and Super Mario 3D World.
Two games that I'd re-play is not worth keeping a whole console for.
I will keep some of the WiiU games though (Two GOTY's for me). Bayonetta 1&2, and Splatoon, which is loaned to Reka until he's done with the machine.

I do keep some consoles. I still have my 360, Dreamcast, Saturn, OG Xbox and I'm unlikely to get rid of them. I've got an Atari2600 in good nick stashed somewhere with a stack of cartridges too. lol.
I tend to keep games more than consoles, even when I don't have the means to play them. I'll have to take a photo of them sometime.
I can't see me keeping any of this gens consoles to be honest. PS4 maybe. Definitely the Switch though - I know this already.

Still hooked up:
In the lounge: XB360 (more for movies and streaming stuff the TV can't do).
Family Room: XB1, PS4, Switch, Wii. That XB1 is on tender hooks too tbh if it wasn't for it being my Overwatch machine. I'd relegate it to the lounge if I needed the space. I'll wait and see what E3 brings first.

I keep mine to add them to the collection. The other half and I aren't too far away from moving into our house that's being built so you can be damned sure I'll be posting sick gaming setup pics pretty soon.

Wait, I actually don't keep them all - if they're gigantic pieces of shit like the XBONE I do indeed get rid of them.

Although come to think of it, that's the only console I've ever sold

WTF????

Digital Foundry have just uploaded their Tekken 7 analysis video, and the game is only 720p on XB1, and 900p on PS4....

In fact - Tekken 7 on XB1 is not only 720p, but the texture filtering/ambient occlusion/depth of field have all been massively scaled back (or entirely removed) - plus the game in general is blurrier & full of tearing.

Plus on the XB1 version, the loading time is horrendous.. 40 fucking seconds loading time for every fight!

Thank god for ARMS on the Nintendo Switch...a TRUE 1080p/60fps fighter!

ANOTHER underpowered console. Looks like the DF stuff was just a puffpiece and now that objective writers are on board we're finding out the truth.

This is just as much a half-step as the PS4 Pro.

PC Master Race the ONLY place for real gamers.
They probably did it on purpose to see if they can make console cycles go back to 5 year cycles again like Wii U.

You could think of the Wii U as mid gen machine. Nintendo deliberately releases the Wii underpowered, to test waggle, then Wii U as the stopgap while they work on the Switch secretly. Or how 3DS could have had the second analogue stick but they made the original not have it so they could later sell the enhanced one later on and reel in more $.

Things have changed. Mid gen is the trick they are using to make us buy more shit.

4K tv is still new to a lot of people. Not many people on the street even know what a Xbox One IS LOL See my post on that.

Whether you like it or not, nintendo has proven that a underpowered machine can survive if the games are good. Game publishers do not want to make games on systems with a low userbase as the PS Vita shows. If you release a really powerful machine but nobody can afford it due to being poor how are the third parties going to make money? (america is becoming more and more socialist which means everyone is on welffare and food stamps, Trump is trying to get them off their fat asses and work for their money by cutting the welfare down a bit - other countries are sick of working and producing things of value while muricans just offer nothing in return) Certainly not from PC gamers who are tiny minority in the gaming scene and refuse to buy triple A games at full price and always wait for fire sales.

You are very shortsighted guy on these boards. You would ignore games like Persona 5 on ps3 simply because it is a last gen game. You would ignore whole fanbases of series and think their money doesn't even matter. You would priobably ignore mario kart 8 last gen simply because it was a 720P game only running at 59 fps. Most of us buy games to actually play them not as tech demonstrations of the hardware we just bought to show off to others. What really shows how shallow you are is that you never bothered to play Vanquish last gen. Vanquish on xbox 360 was the game that killed Gears of War and a very polished title. By ignoring the lesser known developers you are the one responsible for them failing to survive comercially by taking so long to buy thier games. (ie only playing them when they get ported to pc when they are old)

Now I am a fan of overpowered machines but the economy isn't that good to sustain it imo. By going for smaller cycles I think it helps people step up gradually.

PS4 was underpowered. Then PS4Pro came out (60fps at 1080P which is what poeple originally wanted. Nioh does this)

Now MS is copying this strategy.

Nintendo started it with the various 3DS models. 3DS then 3DS XL, now we have New 3DSXL which lets you play certain games like Xenoblade that the normal one can't play.

You can certainly keep posting that gif if you want. But you are assuming I believe you. We don't believe you that you claim to ignore posts . The proof is in how you keep going into my far cry 5 thread even though you know the thread maker is ME. Why would you do that if you are ignoring. Obviously you are stalking Jasper and me because the posts threaten your fave company EA when people criticise them. Look the jig is up. Nobody believes you ok?

PC is not the master race. The master race is the ones with the most interesting games library on it. And consoles are dominating. Not high end pc where only a tiny percentage of people own and most are running shitty indie games that only require a fraction of the power to play on.

PC has the best specs but it isn't stable platform since it is open platform that lets hackers have their way with developers. You see it in the way people try to play World of Warcraft on legacy servers for free, the way emulators try to reverse engineer the consoles in a desperate bid to have something interesting to play, and the "Free to play" model on pc which shows that pc gamers; much like mobile gamers, don't want to BUY games. They are broke! Ok? Businesses need to make profit or they die. You'll understand when companies like CD Projekt Red are forced to make games they make target console specs first and then later enhanced PC versions. They need to milk the console peasant race of $ (since we outnumber pc guys) then using those profits make port to pc (the poor guys who will likely just pirate the games) later.

It worked with GTA5. Everyone played it on console first. Rockstar got its money. They made a profit. Then used the money to port to pc. It's the future because most people are peasants and this is where most money is made. Nobody cares about cutting edge graphics you fool. Why did Pokemon Go get more attention than regular pokemon games on mobile phone land? Because the masses are dumb. Same reason EA succeeds by catering to them and understanding the importance of making games for the masses to survive. MS is losing time so they got to rush out the Scorpio quickly and start winning back all the lost fans that sony gained at PS4 launch when they fucked up with their TV TV TV TV campaign. The solution? Stopgap console for the poor guy, and premium model for the rich guy. Then hope the developers won't mind doing extra work trying to make the game compatible for all platforms.

Nioh and The Surge are great examples of how to do it right. Let us hope the other companies follow and try to custom design each title to work for both low spec entry level base models and the newer models.

IF MS fails I think they will quit the console biz and just go third party and release software on sony and nintendo. They wanted to push this cloud gaming thing but I doubt it will take off as people like playing games offline in case internet goes down. Yes the internet isn't going down. But it just feels safer to know a game can run nice graphics locally without need for third party connected to you at all times. It feels invasive. The idea of always needing to be connected is something blizzard liked too, but the option to not be connected should always be in the consumer's control. Nobody likes a nazi breathing down their neck accusing them of being a criminal just because they didn't log in. We are adults not kid in primary school. And it was stupid to think we'd like less options rather than more options.

Duh, Trade it into the EB Lizards who will refurbish the old console and sell it almost as new to future gamers who still have to catch up with the early adopters.

Did it with my 3DS everytime nintendo released the better model.

I keep old consoles in boxes and when the better versions of the games are released I sell off the old ones. Eg portable port of Zelda OOT and Majora's mask in 3D > n64 versions which I had kept all this time. (these are classic games) So now that enhanced edition makes the old one obsolete and it is portable, it is time to sell it to collectors who have space.

The key to storing old shit is stacking them like tetris. As for handhelds they take up nothing. Pretty much still have my PSP still but if I wanted to I could sell this to gametraders since most of the psp games are also on vita too. (Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX looks great on vita screen but still works great on PSP as physical UMD disc but that's just me since I keep shit in good condition. I have a backup xbox 360 for when the old one dies out. 360 and ps3 were the greatest console generation IMO Current gen is a clusterfuck of half arsed decisions and backflipping lol)

There are these portable offices you can use to store things:
http://www.hccontainers.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Maybe that can be where you store all the old games you'll never play again because you can play them digitally. I am not a game collector but for those that are, this might help keep the house clean when the collection gets too big.
You can store the 486 PC with Doom in these containers and pretend the 90s never ended.
Most old games are only worth replaying if they were good old games. The rest you can forget.

Not everyone can be as good as Team Ninja.
Although this case can be used to point out how underpowered consoles are, games by first parties show how low spec machines can still do decent graphics. When you are lazy and rely too much on other companies technology you lose the polished feel that creating the engine yourself brings. (ie I still have memories of Namco back in the Dreamcast Days with Soul Calibur. No wonder everyone still considers that perfect title. Please read the article DF did on Soul Calibur on Dreamcast. I love the DF retro series! )

Oh well at least they had the sense to keep the 60fps. Very important for Fighters and racers to not dip down as these are compeitive genre.s RPG and open world titles I am fine with 30fps. But action titles need 60 fps minimum imo.

There is a reason games like Fast Racing Neo on Switch and wii u get so much praise. They are smooth as butter and at such high speeds. Polished shit like that is more of what I want.

Economy is going to collapse so I predict people will have less money to spend.
http://www.blogtalkradio.com/cfp-radio/ ... uck-coppes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The greedy money changing banking families will eventually kill the west with debt and we may enter into a cashless society and banning of cash in future to control everyone's souls. (the bible warns not to worship mammon - feed the sick, take care of elderly and orphans and widows and serve people, not money. It isn't living god. The suffering is coming unless we can reverse the evil of the globalist elites) You got to prep and think of the long term. Consoles will be seen as luxury items not neccesities to survive. So companies need to find cheaper ways to produce entertainment without sacrificing quality. The move to off-the-shelf technology and outsourcing work is a sign of poverty of the nation. Without local guys having any jobs who is going to buy the games? They will have to be sold at dirt cheap prices and that might not be enough to profit to sustain the game industry. (indie games will probably rise up and budget titles will see rise in sales wich may be good for garage coders)
