Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
i was just happy to get it through. Had to create a 2nd PayPal account to get around the ebay limit of 1 transaction for the sale.
Had already wasted it on a $70 purchase!
I don't care if it's not totally upgradeable. Last time I upgraded was in 2012 and it usually requires a complete change over anyway. So this is like the console of PCs! Best of both worlds!

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Had anybody bought into Ryzen yet?
I'm expecting a fairly hefty tax refund this year, so I'm tossing up between a Ryzen build, or a down payment for an MR2 GT.
...or, you know, paying bills.

I'm opting for bills this year but a mate is building one with a 1600x

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Early reviews of Vega look pretty bad.
-worse performance than GTX 1080(2016)
-70% higher power draw than GTX 1080
-60% bigger chip than GTX 1080
-only 25% better performance compared to their previous flagship Fury X after 2 years
https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Graphics- ... led-Review" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
What a disaster, now I see why MS went with a higher clocked custom polaris.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Suspect with better driver releases the performance will improve but still pretty disappointing. Just hammers home what a good value proposition the 1070 still is

If anyone is interested, knocked $100 off my BenQ Gsync 1080p panel. Has a high refresh and works with AMD through the HDMI port. In the trading forum for anyone keen.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Vega is a botched launch. AMD are saying among the RX Vega cards there will be faster ones than the Frontier. If RX Vega will go head to head vs GTX1080ti then they should've held off launching until then. If it doesn't then AMD clearly don't mind the bad publicity that comes with launched product not meeting hype expectations.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
People are saying these drivers don't use deferred rendering in hardware, I wonder if these compute gpus are Vega chips that have broken HBC/Deffered rendering and just use the legacy rendering.Rorschach wrote:Suspect with better driver releases the performance will improve but still pretty disappointing. The real launch will use different chips with the affected hardware fixed. Just a guess.

Not sure this counts as PC hardware but got myself a new Monitor on the weekend. Is it ridiculous? Yes. Is playing my racing games on it awesome? Hell yes.
It's a Sony KDL55X9000E

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
At that distance, yep its ridiculous.
I was using a 42 inch 4k monitor at work which I found fatiguing, you need to move your head around since too much of the screen is in the peripheral part of your vision.
Our eyes work in the optimal range of 30 degrees either side of centre, anything more than starts falling into the blurrier peripheral part of our vision.

By the time I sit on my chair behind the wheel I'm about 1.7 meters away so not as bad as it looks at first. And I don't play kb and mouse games (I'm really a console gamer that has a PC) I can use a controller and sit back from the screen. It's great

Adds to the realism, thought you'd be into that.lestat wrote:At that distance, yep its ridiculous.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Why? I make a point of never moving my eyes more than 30 degrees to either side out in the real world. Too much effort.

Yeah I figured you must be sitting back further than the usual 50cm most people sit away from their monitor.Kangawallaby wrote:By the time I sit on my chair behind the wheel I'm about 1.7 meters away so not as bad as it looks at first. Optimal distance is around 2m for a 55 inch, so you're about right.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
So, I know pretty much everybody here would have almost no personal interest in it, but that Ryzen 3 looks the goods for anyone on a tight budget.
...and then there's Threadripper looking at to deliver comparable performance to Core i9 at half the price.
It's good to see the CPU market being interesting again.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
My hardware platform is pretty much fixed for the next 3-4 years but I'll be looking to add an NVMe drive at some point plus a Volta GPU next year whenever they drop. It is fantastic to see genuine competition in the marketplace again, prices will no doubt come down as well.

Heavy power requirement for RX Vega 64. 750w for air cooled, 1000w for liquid cooled.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Imagine how much that would add to your power bill each year if you went from no pc to a 1000w beast!

750w for air
I have a 750w PSU right now and could get a 1080ti + top of the line intel processor and have no issues.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Yeah, that power requirement is nuts. Hopefully it's something along the lines of nVidia's old FX line was, in that it's laying the groundwork for something amazing down the line... but AMD really can't afford that.
