Sonic Mania Plus! Sonic Mania Adventures!!

~Not a spoiler-free zone~

Deserves its own thread I reckon so here we are.

It also gives me one chance to post something about it without running into spoilers, which I'm terrible at avoiding it turns out. Especially when writers drop videos about one game into articles about another. -_-

Despite trying to stay on blackout since FBZ's announcement, this is what I know:
* Sonic 2 level: Chemical Plant
* Sonic CD level: Stardust Speedway
* Sonic & Knuckles level: Flying Battery
* Sonic 1 level: Green Hill
* Sonic 3 level = ???

.. And that blue spheres makes a showing somehow, though not "the" special stage. Guessing one of/the only bonus stage? Perhaps he uses the Sonic 1 & Knuckles approach and there are thousands of them... that'd be cool. As you can see, I'm still making guesses about details that might already be common knowledge.

Stardust Speedway!

Sick nuts! This was the worst spoiler I accidentally stumbled upon, :( oh well. There wasn't a strong consensus back then about which CD level we'd get. Stardust Speedway is absolutely my top pick; probably my most anticipated for the whole game. It's awesome in its own right, I love its spaghetti-like design, and I'm hoping the general "scattered playthings" style of Sonic CD zones gets a decent representation in this one level. I appreciate Sonic CD's style of level design, but not everywhere. I'm expecting the Mania team to tighten up SSZ's focus a bit, so I hope they can get a nice balance between producing as much new terrain as possible, while keeping the actual design style of the original.

Chemical Plant

WTF NNNOOOOOO. Chemical Plant has ruined everything. I only saw a Youtube thumbnail so I don't know anything else about it. I've never been big on Chemical Plant. I don't enjoy grey metal levels, blocky platforming, and feel like I'm the only person who never really loved its music. Plus Generations already covered it so... why. More importantly, the role of metallic and speedy level with cool music has already been perfectly filled by Stardust Speedway. Flying Battery even is enough metal and funky music to make CPZ unnecessary. But no, now we have all three. Sigh. I'm just tired of Chemical Plant the way I was tired of everything in Sonic 4:1.

So pretty bitter about that. Just, wtf team. I wish I could actually see what the general reactions were to its reveal.

Mystic Cave was the legit ideal candidate. Heck since repeating tropes is a thing, Aquatic Ruin would've been fine also. But really, how was this not Mystic Cave? Sad.

Sonic CD jumping

CPZ is the 2nd of 2 disappointments for me. The biggest one being the decision to use Sonic CD roll-jumping (and ditching the insta-shield with it) instead of Sonic 1-K's. I know I'm going to miss the same sense of choosing your control that the Megadrive games had. I'd be all smiles about Chemical Plant if that (and the insta) were returned. It's the one place where Mania isn't a direct superset of Sonic 3&K.

Admittedly this didn't ruin Sonic Fan Remix for me, even with SFR allowing Sonic CD jumping to be exploited really badly, but still. Etc etc.

Bonus stages

So I'm guessing Blue Spheres is a bonus stage thing? Perhaps you already know more about this than I do. I'm not too phased about what is done with the bonus stages. Having all 3 Megadrive special stage types would be a neat and fitting upgrade from Sonic 3, and all 3 are good for procedural generation... so that could have been pretty cool. But new content would be good too.. whatever.

Sonic 3 level

I had been hoping it was Hydrocity; it's the ideal candidate. Super spacious, perfect for the Mania team to work with. Fast, a little too linear, again perfect for the Mania team to update. That was literally the only thing wrong with Hydrocity imo, and is the exact thing the Mania changes address. Like FBZ, its music has a really strong identity on its own and would be great to hear again. And so far, so no water trope to be seen in Mania. So it seriously must be Hydrocity that we're getting.

But since this Chemical Plant reveal, dammit, I want Icecap now. I wanted Hydrocity, Chemical Plant ruined everything, now I want Icecap. It's closer to home for me. I know its level design is not as remix-friendly as Hydrocity's. I know the Icecap music has been done to absolute death (it sounds good backwards too btw). And honestly I just can't picture how an Icecap remix in Mania would be a better stage than a Hydrocity remix. But I would take that chance now. I want my fun happy level because Chemical Plant has ruined everything.

Sorry for the GH rant. Rest easy knowing I won't be posting/reading here again until after I've played it. :D

If this game is a success, and it's quite likely it will be, I can't imagine there isn't going to be a follow up. There's plenty of time to revisit the classics. The Chemical Plant remake looks pretty cool. This whole game looks cool.

So far I am happy with everything I have seen.. though not as happy as the guy in this video at the 5:20 mark.

I love how everyone was so happy about only 3 characters :D

Chem plant is an awesome level and has awesome music. You are wrong.

But since we are hating on things that are accepted as iconic and awesome; green hill zone music (and the sonic 1 music in general) is shit. That repeating musical pedal is such vomit. The entire sonic 1 soundtrack is devoid of tension.

Oh yea and I will be on board with sonic mania. I'm trying to get some regular play of the originals in hype preparation.

Humble Bundle Store has it listed for $16.19 USD, might pull the trigger. Still yet to finish Sonic CD and Sonic 3 though, nearly 25 years after the fact.

It's games like this that are going to be awesome to play in handheld mode on the Nintendo Switch.

Frankly the Nintendo Switch version is literally the SUPERIOR version, as it's identical to all the other versions..except you can also play the game in the comfort of your living room on the big screen, as well as when you're away from home and out and about. :)

The game is also now available for download on the Nintendo Switch eShop!

What? You mean Sonic Mania now available for download on the Nintendo Switch eShop?...yep, it's true! :D

In fact I believe the Switch digital download version on the Australian eShop is the only version currently available anywhere in the world. :P
