Chemical Plant Zone 2 boss comes to mind, as does the Hydrocity 2 boss. In both cases, I was blown away by the thoughtfulness of them, and super glad nobody told me about them.GeneraL CyberFunK wrote:What exactly are spoilers for a Sonic game? Do you mean the zones??

Re: Sonic Mania
I've gone back and forth with both versions on the same TV - PS4 Pro version is a sharper, crisper image at 4k compared to 1080p.Deef wrote:Been wondering about this and please correct me if I'm wrong. I can't figure out how Sonic Mania would look better in 4K than it would at 1080p. There's nothing sub-pixel happening anywhere, right?Candy Arse wrote:The superior PS4 Pro version looks mint in 4k
So I imagine that the smallest movement on a 2K screen and the smallest movement on a 4K screen in Sonic Mania would look mathematexactly the same.
Now if the game really does support higher refresh rates (unlikely but maybe in the 3D parts?) that's another story.
1080p looks fine but everything is more sharp and clear at 4k, it renders natively at 4k for PS4 Pro.

Unboxing of the Sonic Mania collectors edition. It includes a 12" Sonic statue as well as a Mega Drive replica with a power switch that turns on the "SEEGAA" startup audio!

If I was in aus I would've snapped that bad boy up.
Re: Sonic Mania
GHZ2 is great for time attacking. I don't know the best path yet but one route has 2 power sneakers and a fire shield.
As large as the zone feels, I'm thinking it can probably be done in around ... 37 seconds. (I could google this but it would kinda spoil the fun).
Finally a classic Sonic with a good time attack mode. I love how the music doesn't even restart when you use the quick restart; such an improved experience for time attacking now.
Speaking of music, man the music bug happens like 1 in 3 days. There's definitely a QA issue here. They have to patch for some leaderboards-breaking glitch Knuckles has so hopefully the music issue would be fixed too.
My favourite zone is a contest between Green Hill and Studiopolis. As I mentioned earlier, GHZ is kind of perfect to me. Blue sky, green grass, and my preferred style of level where it feels like layers, not just paths. I've always liked GHZ but it was just too small. Mania pretty much delivers dead on the GHZ I would have asked for and, with that, my favourite version of my favourite level style.
However Studiopolis Act 1 is really good level design. When I first saw it in trailers I felt a bit surprised, because it looked better design-wise than I would have raised my hopes for. Paths, options, size, gimmicks, more paths, speed, actual space. Having played it a bunch now, honestly I am only surprised further. It's like there's a big test of DOs and DON'Ts out there, and Studiopolis Act 1 got 100% on that test. Someone actually made a level with so much space, yet gimmicks, yet speed, yet paths. Paths everywhere. Much speed but not finding the cheap parts. There are many things that validate Sonic Mania of course, but if there were only 1 thing, it's that it has maybe the best design of an act of all the classics.
I'm not in love with its colour scheme and that left me a bit cold, but the actual level design itself is definitely winning me over. Studiopolis Act 2 is I believe the best looking act in the game, and also a strong level design that's fast and fun and filled with gimmicks, but I've noticed I'm definitely moving to Act 1 more for replays. So you go from (in my opinion) probably the best playing, to the best looking, act in the game inside Studiopolis.
If it came down to the bosses, GHZ would win.

Zones, bosses, easter eggs. The game has a lot of fan service, progression and seeing the old levels is half the fun.GeneraL CyberFunK wrote:What exactly are spoilers for a Sonic game? Do you mean the zones??
Re: Sonic Mania
Almost there guys!
More random things:
I always (like for 3 days) wondered what that red bit was on the title screen.... the small, slightly curved bit that starts the whole animation but is then completely concealed. What's the point of it?
It's the bit that houses the Megadrive's power led. And then all that electricity.... Sonic Mania's title screen is literally a Megadrive powering up. How friggin' cool is that?
Being so symbolic it's my new favourite Easter egg. The circle around Sonic is also the Megadrive's d-pad bay... notice the circles and triangles.

Super Sonic 2nd button activation... and bug fixes for PC release.
Likely at least the music bug and Knuckles climbing glitch. Wish, but doubt, they'd fix Knuckles' landing too.
Fingers crossed for 144Hz support. Apparently about 1 hour from Steam release (so 10pm-ish WA time? Edit -- Or not).

Oh. My. God.
The only thing that could make this better would be if I could play it with my MegaDrive controller.

GET!
Took AGES.... to get my SEGA pad working. It seems to only support xbox & ps controllers out of the box. Easily configured in Steam though, I just hadn't had to do it before and it was a bit of a pain at first.

Played a little of the first stage before jumping on Destiny 2 but damn, this game feels like an actual Sonic - just like original Megadrive games. These guys should be the only guys to develop Sonic from now on.

Re: Sonic Mania
There was a bit of a stink it turned out with online-only being a thing. But it's been fixed it seems.
I can say the PC version is indeed identical to the console, I can't pick a difference. A couple of suspicions but really, pixel for pixel the same.
Unfortunately that includes no fixes to some obvious bugs. Very first music change in the game, bugs out. I guess it simply didn't get high enough priority... dunno, it's hard to believe they didn't address it. It's so visible.
But 144Hz support, woot! Admittedly I couldn't feel a difference... might try some back & forth. I can only think that either it's not 'really' implemented, or the low-res nature of the game pretty much hides it. The 3D stages should betray it though right?. You can use the bonus stages to get an idea of the frames being displayed (via afterimages of the turning checkerboard), but it looked about the same as the console version to me. And really, when any game jumps to 144fps it should be very noticeable.
Having said all that, it runs water tight. I was expecting some kind of PC shenanigans, but it is rock solid.
Unrelated to the PC version, I've noticed that split-screen mode is really much more fun than full-screen mode .... in GHZ Act 2. Because that act is a blast, you can just scream around everywhere, and the squished horizontal view only makes it feel crazy faster. Either way, it's definitely the act I'm having the most fun in. I think the open/layered style of level just wins it for me.

I hated Blue Spheres in Sonic 3, and I hate it even more now that I'm old and don't have the reflexes I used to!

Re: Sonic Mania
Wow how good is Studiopolis? I've always felt like I'm playing Sonic wrong, but here I finally felt like the world was my playground. Loving the early 90's motif, and abit of Casinopolis (but much better) music. And it's a brand new original stage yeh?
Though FBZ soon put me back in my place
Deef to you have Steam? I'd be interested to try out the "View game" functionality, and really see how it can be played.

Yeah, Studiopolis is like without fault. It literally does everything at once, well.
Except it's the worst mini boss imo. The zone boss isn't great either.
But the zone amazes me in how well some guy nailed level design.

100% agree. I love all the fan service in the level, too - the popcorn machine, the hornet branded cars... I even found a "Welcome To The Next Level" sign hidden in there.

Re: Sonic Mania
It makes you cringe, how slowly I do those spin dashes. I still can't use a Dual Shock 4 as well as the old Megadrive controllers. Several times I've missed a PB purely because I'm only mashing 2 buttons instead of 3.
Anyway, that run was one massive mistake that just copped a sequence of lucky bounces. Completely missed the main jump, yet it's nearly 2 seconds better than my next best.
I had to cut the end so short because I discovered that the mic on the god damn Vive, hanging off to the side, had been recording the whole time!
