Night Trap 25th Anniversary
I bought it out of pure curiosity and novelty value. I never had a Mega CD, and never got to play it back in the days when it was making headlines.
It is not a good game, but I knew this going in. I used a guide to play through it. There was no way I was pouring time into this through trail and error and memorizing it.
It was worth the experience purely to satisfy the curiosity, and I'm glad I did it. It's trashy and it's campy just as expected.

Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle
I enjoyed it a lot. It is very charming and looks excellent. Some parts were absolutely superb. Boss of world 3 - awesome.
But....
It is babys first TBS game, no question. Way, way too easy and moves too slow.
Very simple skill trees and weapon variety.
Switch says at least 30 hours played, and I did enjoy it a lot.

Certainly not up there with the masterpieces that are Xcom Enemy Unknown or any Advance Wars game, but more enjoyable than the glitchy unbalanced mess that is Xcom2.
The IGN Xcom guy was right.

Uncharted: Lost Legacy

It was ok, lacked the charm of a good lead character, felt like an expansion pack, too short. Just when it started to get going and I was enjoying it, it ended.

Was there supposed to be an implied romance between Chloe & Nadine? All the longing looks but it didn't go anywhere? Then Sam Drake comes along. Did they think this game needs a man? It only comes off as odd because he doesn't assist with anything and leaves all the heavy lifting to the women. I wasn't a fan of his character in UC4 anyway.

Is this was a fully realised UC4 level game it would be a 9 it's more like a 6 or 7 as is. For $40 it was good.

CupHead
Too hard, and offers nothing really new gameplay wise. But that art-style, graphics and sound/music are all absolutely superb and are strong enough to carry the game all the way through to the end.
As frustrating as it is, the levels are so short that it's very easy to keep pressing retry.
I really enjoyed the 2D SHMUP levels. I really wish this company made a full blown 2D SHMUP bullet hell game with this art style.
For me, the Dragon, the Bee and the Devil were the hardest levels. I actually cruised through the robot. I don't understand how people are struggling so hard on that one.
No loot crates.

SteamWorld Dig 2
Again, offers nothing really new, but next level polish for an indy game. I enjoyed it a lot.
No loot crates.

Yeah cuphead is an interesting one, while playing it, in my mind it was 10.

But after some reflection I'd give it 8/10. The core gameplay loop and challenge was addictive, with some amazing design in boss battles. But really there isn't much to the game, the boss fights once you master them are really 2 minute affairs, the run and gun sections are disappointing imo, there is no continuity between the bosses.

I also think its a shame a lot of people won't be able to enjoy this due to frustration, I really hope these guys use this to create a great more fleshed out adventure game which is more accessible to all skill levels.

Yakuza 0

The Japanese sure know how to tell a story. That's for damn sure. Both this and Persona5 are far above any other videogame stories. Only Horizon can come close from Western devs.
I see this game as the 2017 evolution of the scrolling beat 'em up executed poorly, spliced with a slow, drawn out, but awesome JRPG story. The beat 'em up sections really don't flow very smoothly. Getting stuck in animation sequences, it felt very Dead Rising like janky. And those escort missions were awful. This game has a very last gen feel to it.
Persona5 was far, far better in all regards, particularly combat and payoff in the story.

The story and characters were definitely the highlight to me. I particularly like Tachibana and Makotos characters and story arcs.
Three hours between entering the final sequence and the credits rolling, without any save points is unforgivable.

I liked it enough, but not enough to get into the series.

You didn't rate it out of 10 though! :D

Fire Emblem Warriors
I must admit, I'm partial to button mashers, and Warriors games are the best button mashers.
This game was mad fun from start to finish, and it's polished all to hell. So smooth and slick.
Problem is, there isn't much content here. And when it's all said and done, sure I can go back and grind character levels, but that's it. It just seems to have less content and variety than either One Piece or Hyrule. Maybe it was a bit rushed to fill out the release schedule?
Ryoma is an absolute beast. Just like he was in Fates.

Not as good as Hyrule or One Piece, but still a decent, fun Warriors experience.

Binary Domain.

Been meaning to play it for years. Loved it. Great production, fun plot twists, cheesy as hell. Very Sega.

Zelda Breath of the Wild

Yes, it took ages. I blame it on not enough time to spend on gaming, but the time I did spend I mostly spent on wandering around exploring and finding shrines rather than driving towards the end. Plus if my son was around he permanently wanted to find shrines and visit fairies, which led to even more time spent not finishing it. Now with Mario Odyssey due at the end of the week, I pushed my way through and finished it off.

Is this a brilliant game? Yes. As an open world game that encourages the original sense of wonder and exploration that Miyamoto envisaged at the start of the Zelda series, this absolutely nails it. Is it the best open world game ever? No. That's probably Witcher 3 IMO.

Is this the best Zelda ever? Almost. People complain about moving away from a strict Zelda formula, and I'd almost agree except my memory is long enough to remember the variations they've made over the years (Zelda 2's side on perspective, Links Awakening mixing in platforming sections, A Link Between Worlds removing strict ordering from dungeons, etc). This is the most "not Zelda" game they've made, but all the changes work within the original core intent of Zelda. It's like comparing Symphony of the Night to the original Castlevania platformers. They're different, but bred from the same stock.

In terms of the best Zelda ever, I'd say it sits slightly below A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. The lack of dungeon variety and complexity hurts it, but the sense of being "in world" is fantastic, and there are less blatantly kludgy sections than the next layer of Zeldas down (eg the triforce collection wank at the end of Wind Waker).

Slain: Back from the hell
8/10

Came across a game a few days called ago Slain: Back from the hell, has some nice pixel art, with great use of parallax layers and effects to give good atmosphere. The game is a rastan/castlevania type game with big emphasis on parries/deflects, you'll die a lot and need to master timing/patterns to get though sections. It has checkpoints in fair spots and I got hooked, several good boss fights.

I originally started playing this on my vita but I gave up and went to PC, the vita version is 30fps and I felt the controls just weren't tight enough for me to perform the tight parries. Play time on steam is telling me 6hrs. Overall I'd give it 8/10. Fun game with enough variety, good tough challenge if like that sorta thing. It's on sale at steam/psn right now.

Super Mario Odyssey

This has to be taken in context. We are talking about a mainline Mario game here. A new mainline Mario game is certainly expected to be in GOTY discussions, and likely to be debated in GOAT discussions. So what's gone wrong?
Spoiler!
Where's the Boo level(s)? Where's the slide level(s)? When Captain Toad shows up and they play his theme, why don't we get a mini Captain Toad level? The T-Rex is only in a tiny section of the game.
It's like they have never played a Mario game before. Or understand what defines a Mario game.
They just keep playing the nostalgia card over and over again.

Compared to most games it's amazing.
Compared to it's lineage it's soul-less.
It's too easy, and it feels rushed and unfinished. The reason I say this is because of the inconsistencies when collecting moons. Sometimes it gives you the whole song and dance with Mario and Cappy spinning around the Moon, other times, for the same reward, it just says on screen "Congrats on the moon!". It's almost as if the ones with less fanfare were originally meant to be part of level moon fragment find/collect-a-thons. Seriously, sometimes you get rewarded with moons for doing bugger all. So they've bumped up the bosses to give you 3 moons. It just feels very unpolished and very un-Mario-like.

This post definitely sounds too negative. The reality is that this is a fucking great game. And OMG, the music is fucking sensational.
64, Galaxy and 3D World are all better than this though.

8/10

Edit: FWIW, I'm told that I'm too spoiled with great games this year (P5, HZD and BotW), and that's why I can't see Mario Odysseys true greatness. Maybe they're right.

Yakuza Kiwami 9/10

Completely missed the Yakuza boat and misread what type of games they were and never bothered to look into them. Gave this one a go because of the packaging and the remake was getting great reviews and turns out I absolutely loved it, felt like Sega at it's best and it is just a damn great game. Sunk 60 hours into this one and still didn't finish everything and this map is tiny compared to modern games. A great replication of Japan and the feel is spot on too with the NPC's and the places to go, that authencity helped, eagerly awaiting Yakuza Kiwami 2 now.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I took a break from Zero and haven't played Kiwami before. If you enjoy Kiwami and it's sequel then you'll need a PS3 to play Yakuza 3, 4 & 5. Sadly 5 is only available digitally as it never got a physical release in English. If by some really slim chance you do make it up to #5 hit me up and I'll give you my login to download it on PS3.

Super Mario Odyssey

I'm torn on this one..

Going through things initially, I suspected this would be one of my GOAT games. The platforming feels just as good as normal, the levels are a breath of fresh air for a Mario game, and the possession capability adds some truly amazing gameplay mechanics. Running around New Donk City exploring and platforming has been one of my favourite video game experiences since forever. My only knock on it was the relative dearth of pure platforming (and certainly none of the brilliant setups that existed in the Galaxy games).

.. and then I completed the game (or the "main quest" if you will).

Completing the main storyline is almost embarrassingly easy. I blew through it in a few days of sporadic play, and I think I was only challenged a couple of times. There does appear to be a decent level of post-game stuff and from what I've seen the difficulty level is immediately ramped up. I have a couple of problems with this way of doing things:

- Lots of people (me especially) struggle to complete games unless there is a storyline pulling them along and new stuff to see. I never usually get drawn into "post game" stuff unless there's brand new levels to explore rather than augmentations of existing ones (I haven't spoiled things for myself with Odyssey yet by checking to see if that's the case, beyond the
Spoiler!
Mushroom Kingdom
). At the moment I've got random queries to
Spoiler!
find the Princess and likely places where Yoshi would be needed
, but no overwhelming objective. If I end up with just moon collection to keep me going, I'll likely just stop playing.

- Mario games, no matter their overall difficulty level, have always had perfectly gradiented difficulty levels, and as Elf said it reaches a peak with the final world and fighting Bowser. This game stayed the same difficulty all the way through, and then turns things up by 100% in the first post-game stuff. I can't think of another Mario game where they've done this.

So, this game could have been a GOAT in my eyes. However it'll have to settle for having the best gameplay mechanics (if nowhere near the best platforming) of any of the Mario games due to the cap and the gameplay changes you can experience through possession. The main storyline is too easy, and completing it was underwhelming.

Still, 9 sexy Goomba moons out of 10.

Thanks Tomby, will see how I go, hopefully Kiwami 2 gets the expected English release or I'm screwed before I get started. I might go Yakuza 0 next but I have a few other games to knock off before I get back into it.

Here's one of them I knocked off tonight - Gone Home

What an absolute piece of shit. Reading all of the reviews I was expecting something pretty good but finished it in 2 hours and the story was predictable from about the 2nd or 3rd journal entry. 2/10 mostly for the audio.

Fuck that site. It’s neogaf the 2nd.

Anyway, I also recently completed MARIO Odyssey. Loved it. So far my game of the year. Nothing will beat it now though as most major games have released. It’s so much fun. There’s so much to do. It constantly surprises. Seeing as it’s released so early in the Switch’s life, I’m hoping a sequel or some brilliant dlc is on the way. An easy 10/10.

By the way, I see so much love for Mario 3D world and some saying it’s better than Odyssey. I don’t see it to be honest. Thought it was one of the weaker and easiest Mario games I’ve played. Odyssey obliterates it. Odyssey ranks up there with Mario 64 and Super Mario World as my fav Mario games of all time.

LIMBO (mild spoiler alert)

I bought Inside recently and couldn't buy it without finally getting Limbo. I've only been saying I'd love to play it since 2010. I doubted whether it would still work for me 7 years later but it roped me in immediately. Beautiful game in every way. Played it with my 360 pad for the authentic experience. The ending is perfect because those anti gravity puzzles were elevating my four letter word vocabulary pretty handily when suddenly.... *flash*. Missed most of the achievements so will gladly replay. Fuck that 5 lives achievement though. Pleased I played it before Inside.

Recently picked up Wonderboy: The dragon's trap, somehow this slipped by the Radar and I saw it on special so picked it up.

I started playing and was immediately hooked, this is an amazing remake, the art has so much love put into it and the new animations/art works exceptionally well with the old 8bit sprite detection/physics code, I loved swiping back to the 8bit original to see how much of a drastic difference they made. I finished the game, got all the secret stones, full armor/weapon sets. So much fun, so challenging but fair. This has to be the best classic remake I've ever played. Wonderboy was such a great series.

I Bought it for PS4 and it simply is fantastic. The new music is great.. but I can't help but play the original music. They totally set the standard for all remakes in terms of attention to detail. Sega should take note when they look at doing new Sonic games too. USE THE OLD PHYSICS! :D

Monster Boy and the cursed kingdom.

A modern sequel to the wonderboy games with original creator Ryuichi Nishizawa involved, meant to be out next year, looks great. Definitely pick it up when it comes out.
