Elex (Piranha Bytes new RPG)

Post by GameHED »

New Piranha Bytes game that nobody knew about is here out now:

Reviews:
Walkthrough/impressions:
thread discussion/shillers/ads talking about it being good:

If you were disapointed by Zelda not having story then this game looks like it might interest you. Like Zelda a cataclysmic event happened and you got to figure out what to do as a generic guy in a world with outdated textures.
Noticed that nobody is hyping this game accept for gothic and risen fans. A game like this would have made a perfect title to be ported to the nintendo switch but too bad nobody had faith in it and you can't get it on there. I plan to get this soon to show support for these guys doing console ports of the games. But they got to patch out the bad stuf first.
Witcher 3 and this need to learn good combat from games like Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma if they ant to get noticed. Hitting things need to be fun and less like skyrim where the weapon merely clips through objects like you are a ghost. Once the battle animations is convincing and enemy reaction to being hit feels right for the energy the PC is putting into the move, then the game will appeal to wider audience who will buy the games and make you profits. (look at the improvements bethesda made to ranged combat in fallout 4 for example. European devs need to be aware of what is doing well in the market to stick out. This game went right under the radar for me.

Elex (Piranha Bytes new RPG)

Nobody knew about? I’ve seen it all over Steam and GOG. Art and setting look nice but gameplay looks clunky and dated vs Witcher 3.

Witcher3 still feels bad though.

There is a nice thread on resetera comparing the good points of witcher with the good points of Zelda BOTW

Generally Witcher 3 has the best story/sidequest and zelda destroys it for movement and world simulation/environmental interaction. In other words if your world feels dead and static, it is just cosmetic sceneary and not the same as a constantly evolving and changing sandbox with emergent gameplay which is what Zelda did right along with intuitive controls.

Yes Zelda looks ugly in terms of graphics compared to current gen tech platforms, but after hours of play your brain focuses on important things like how actions you do affect the status of the game which you use to determine what you should do. The more complex an environment which is dynamic, the more it stimulates your mind because you have to factor in the unknown and this is the secret of why games like GTA3 were so popular and why sandbox gaming became a whole genre. People want living and breathing active environments not just a strong narrative. Environmental storytelling is also more interesting to some people because you tell your story through clues the person must gather which is an active skill you perform rather than a passive job you soak in like watching tv or listening to a radio. Watch the movie Mad Max 2. The main character says very little but the visuals tell the story. And some people enjoy games that don't require chatting to people all the time. But doing fun activity that looks dangerous, needs skills, and is unpredictable enough that replaying it gets you varied result on repeat playthroughs. As kids we used to like mystery in games but we lost that when they went all 'cinematic' on us during the playstation 1 era when game devs were obsessed with recreating the hollywood movie experience rather than the active explorer's experience. Zelda feels like a real game. I miss the old games where you were told nothing and had to figure things out by doing it, and then learning as you do. Games these days want to tell me everything about themselves and you feel like you are in a cage guided along a strict path rather than reacting to a simulation of a world in realtime. The latter is what we want more of not the scripted shit. The scripted shit can be entertaining if writers are talented and make the story entertaining, but games at their core are not stories you hear about, but things that are created as you play. Big difference imo. Game environments that exist as 3D sculpture but nothing to do in them get boring because you don't feel immersed in it. This is why the future of open world games belongs to simulations of activity that interact with other simulations to create the state of the world which can give you the illusion that it is alive. Not merely scripted but the state of the people and world exist as a result of all these interactions happening in realtime which make your experience hard to predict.

It's the difference betwen walking on the set of a hollywood movie vs going to a planet and exploring it. In the former case, you can walk around and see it is fake thing when you notice the limited things you can do there and the limited angles you can view the set. (only things that the camera is meant to see is created to give the illusion of a place) In the latter case, you are truly experiencing being in the other place with no restrictions and the weather, people, animals, natural events (earthquakes, volcanoes, famines etc) are the result of things that got them to that state from complex interactions with each other to get the final result which you see in a given place and time. (the chaos that makes replay fun)

If they took out the clunky and dated gameplay from the next GTA, I'd be inconsolable.

Then this game looks extremely charming. ;) Apparently the story is great, voice acting good but the game in its current state is pretty broken. I foresee it being patched/fixed prompting updated reviews saying it's an underrated gem, followed by me buying it on sale in a year or so and eventually playing it sometime in 2025.

One day these guys could be the next CDProjekt Red after EA buys them and corrupts them and kills them by forcing Cyberpunk to be a third person action shooter with multiplayer online as the core focus of the game and not single player RPG.

Their world design is good because each area look unique and handcrafted and makes you feel like a stranger in an alien world. Bethesda should buy them and get them to make a Morrowind 2. Just tell them they are not allowed to have any voice over and instead replace it with text only for NPC to give it that old school feel of early bethesda titles. Let nintendo publish it on switch and do all the bug testing. Crappy textures on small screen would fit fine and save cartridge space. Being underpowered guy in this game who dies in two hits will also shut up all those people that say RPGs are becoming too easy and dumbed down for the casuals (ie Skyrim) and give them something to sink their teeth into.

Switch sales are doing good enough for a port of this. Since there are not many third parties right now on the switch, the advantage of them doing this = they will get noticed more on the platform since there is less competition for buyer's attention due to the library being smaller.(just like morrowind when it appeared on the original XBOX as the first western open world rpg for the console which stood out for being set in such a weird world.Things that are weird tend to stick out in your mind longer than ones that are conforming to a common look)
