Fuck that 5 lives achievement though.
I was on my last life on the very last jump. I'm a notorious choker so pretty stoked I made that achievement. My hands were pouring out the sweat.

Hunting the achievements in that game is fun, enjoy. One of the very few games I've 100%'d and I agree, it's a beautifully made game by a developer who's quickly become one of my favourites.

Witcher 3 (spoilers)

Finished the main campaign on the weekend. Deserves a post here despite the game being far from finished. Geralt is tucked away at Kaer Morhen, Roach is tied up outside and there's still expansions, treasure hunts, contracts and Gwent to be played. My ending contained a sad goodbye but I've since learned it's one of the good endings. I romanced Yen, stuck with Feline gear (that light armour buff too good to ignore), fast combat/alchemy build and this was plenty to make comfortable work of Blood and Bones difficulty. I'm interested to see how the ending I got plays out in the expansions. Will give Geralt a break for a while and finally knock over Wolfenstein TNO before starting on the expansions and other superior/grand master gear hunts.

10/10.

Bought myself a Acer Predator 27" IPS monitor for Christmas (to be opened Christmas day, d'oh). Probably the first thing I'll play on it will be Witcher 3. I stalled halfway through Hearts of Stone and apparently Blood and Wine is gorgeous and awesome, so I'm looking forward to the jump to Gsync, 1440, max settings and ridiculous framerate.

* Yes I didn't buy a 4k monitor because I'm cheap and got a good deal

1440p is perfect at 27inches and the Predator is an awesome monitor, you won't regret it.

Finished Wolfenstein 2.

So the gameplay is...well....it's ok. It's not shit, but it sure as hell isn't DOOM. The level design is VERY hit and miss as it's easier than it should be to get totally lost due to poor design.

Playing the game as a serious shooter ie take cover, look down the sights etc will get you killed quickly. Play it run and gun like DOOM and you're going to have a chance of winning.

Now for the real reason why this game is fucking amazing - the story! The story is completely bananas with so many memorable moments (particularly the Hitler scene) that I barely even know where to start.

All I can say is that I hope others on the Ranch have finished this? I want to talk about how fucking crazy the story is!

9/10 purely based on the story. Would watch again.

Wolfenstein TNO

Knew it was good before I started. Reasons why I personally found it good:

Fun stealth. I just couldn’t go wrong with this game. It was fun to sneak around and mouse 3 my way through the joint. Warm feelings of accomplishment if I managed to clear a level silently, equally fun if I was spotted and had to whip out the arsenal. That’s a good game.

Boss battles. The boss fights had equal measures of strategy and brute force. Boss battles that are all weak points and QTEs are tedious for mine. It’s nice to be able to just run around and shoot the shit out of them to take them down.

Story and plenty of slickly produced cut scenes. I’m the opposite of those gamers who whinge about cut scenes. I like story-driven games and if cut scenes are good I’ll love watching them regardless of length or frequency. Good gameplay and compelling plot via cut scenes are my perfect SP game.

The only downer for me is performance. This game is renowned for poor AMD performance. Didn’t matter what I did with settings, I would get fleeting stuttering and frame drops to mid 40s for no discernible reason. Glad The New Colossus runs much better on AMD cards.

9/10.

Q.U.B.E. Director's Cut

Q.U.B.E. is a first-person puzzle game made by a small team who clearly liked Portal quite a bit. Dial your expectations to "student project made in Unreal in 2011" and you'll find a clever and enjoyable little game that you'll knock over in a handful of hours. Problems are physics-based, and generally involve manipulating your environment to find your way forward. Some degree of dexterity is required with certain puzzle types, but it's a lot less demanding in that regard than the Portal games as I recall.

Visually the game has a very minimalist look, which admittedly I'm a sucker for. Puzzle elements are colour-coded, everything else is grayscale, mostly white. The relatively small pool of art assets becomes more apparent toward the end of the game when the environments get a little busier, but overall I quite liked the clean look of this game. The audio (including voice acting) was good but poorly balanced- the ambient soundtrack may have been great but I couldn't tell you because the dialogue was so loud that I had to turn the whole game down. Individual SFX/Voice/Music sliders were sadly absent from the bare bones options menu on the PS4 version, perhaps PC players will fare better in this regard.

Image
Tony Stark experiences a fever dream. The actual game has no jpeg artifacts.

Controls are exactly what you'd expect having seen the above screenshot. You can move, jump, and have two buttons to interact with the puzzle elements that more or less translate to "push" and "pull", with different coloured tiles responding in different ways. Only once did I waste time trying to solve a puzzle that had become unsolvable due to a physics glitch- rooms that can potentially reach an unsolvable state have prominent reset buttons, but this one didn't so I guess this bug wasn't accounted for. Spent about 15 minutes trying different things until I thought to reset it by quitting and loading my game, after which I solved it immediately. Not a major complaint, and there were no other hiccups throughout.

While I wouldn't say the game holds your hand, it also never demands too much of you. New tile types are introduced in isolation before being combined for more complex puzzles. Apart from that glitch there was only one room that I didn't solve quickly, and it served as a good breakpoint to make Q.U.B.E. two healthy sessions of gameplay rather than one slightly unhealthy one. For me it was a welcome change of pace to simply be left to my own devices rather than some condescending hint being thrown out after a few minutes of not progressing, but on the other hand the game is completely linear, so I can also see how it could be frustrating if you get stuck.

I've never played the original release, but apparently the Director's Cut added the narrative that is presented throughout the main game. It's not overbearing, and I understand that a lot of players lose interest in games if there isn't a story pulling them along, but I'm not sure it was really needed here. If you're playing this game it's for the puzzles, and if you don't enjoy that aspect the story isn't going to be enough in and of itself. The ending was nice in that it seemed to knowingly leverage the fact that anyone playing this game to completion will likely have played Portal. I'm actually interested to try the original for comparison if the opportunity presents itself.

At ~$3 in the current January sale it's a great way to spend those little bits of PSN credit that accumulate every time you buy something that's not quite a round figure. It's also available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, Wii U and Xbone, so odds are good you'll be able to play it. If you enjoy it, you'll be glad to hear there's a sequel slated for 2018.

7/10 regular hexahedrons.

Need for Speed - The Run PS3

I know, I know, it's an old game, well by NFS standards and I know it wasn't received well but a little part of me thought the media might've overreacted. They didn't, it was pretty bad. Part of me had high hopes, racing from coast to coast over 50 stages. I thought it might've been an updated version of the old C64 classic "The Great American Road Race" from Activision but instead we got a scripted racer that looked like arse with very few if any memorable moments and a shitty ending. I needed to scratch an arcade racing itch and I only paid $10 for it so it wasn't too bad in that regard, but still.

3 moments it tried to shine out of 10

I haven't played a game this buggy in YEARS

Unininstalled and re-installed GeForce drivers didn't fix it. I thought deleting the config file had fixed it, nope, back to freezing all the time, crash to desktop with a crash dump error

Started when I got to the old family farm, been shitting itself ever since.

Wolfenstein 2.

Seems to be working again after another delete of the config file. I suspect that optimising the game through GeForce Experience (when the most recent drivers came out) is the culprit, but because it's been running well I haven't tried optimising again to confirm.

Bloody good game when it's actually working for me. Which is why I've been persisting.

Just finished both....

Wolfenstein: The New Order
Wolfenstein: The Old blood.

Both games have been sitting in my backlog for yonks, had to finally get them out of the way to move on to Wolfenstein 2.

Both game delivered, played through both on Uber difficulty. The Old Blood boss was so damn good, really loved the direction the final few chapters went.

Wolfenstein: The New Order PS4

Finally finished this last night, picked it up back in June on sale and been chipping away at it since. Certainly one of the more enjoyable fps games I've played in recent years. Loved the alternate time line story, going to the moon, Nazi run UK etc and the shooting mechanics were highly satisfying. Not really much else to say that hasn't been said already and I'm also surprised how many people here have finished this lately especially for a 3+ year old game. Not sure when I'll start #2 as I'd like to get back to Yakuza 0 or The Witcher 3 which are both unfinished.

Horizon Zero Dawn

I want to avoid sitting here writing for 2 hours so I'm just going to bang out my general impression and chuck in whatever badly-fitting points come to mind on the way. And then probably lay down bullets of highs and lows. So this will be a bad read!

HDZ sets an amazing impression by pushing boundaries and excelling in several areas. Character facial modelling, character animation, a real non-sexualised female lead, combat play and variety, and (maybe above all) the enemies... are all places where Horizon makes you feel like you're playing the best of what there is.

The post-post-apocalyptic theme is really enjoyable, as the contrast of tech and tribal is done in a bright and entertaining way, be it outfits, locations, or battles. This immediately made the game compelling and interesting for me; likewise for a friend who bought Assassin's Creed: Origins at the same time, is a big AC fan, and later realised that HZD has completely spoilt AC:O for her.

The enemies in this game are awesome. They look, sound, move, and explode awesomely. Fighting them is very fun, and it's great how Horizon has robot dinosaurs without being a game about the cliche that is robot dinosaurs. I have to reiterate the cool-in-a-fun-way factor; that friend and I have both marvelled at these distinct things: how cool they sound, how cool they look, how cool they move. The explosions part is just me but that's also super cool. Yes I've said the word "cool" 5 times in 2 lines but that's the thing; that's where Horizon shines. Backed up by a solid and diverse battle system and all this cool translates to genuine enjoyment, in a game that comes with that "leading edge" feel. Nice.

However.

Horizon then drops the ball in a few of the bigger picture areas, to make the experience fail a little to live up to the expectations I wanted to have.

The quest system does perhaps every wrong thing it can think of. If, that is, you're hoping for quests that you actually get to play. The game provides so many options to turn off all the dumbing down HUD icons it throws at you, but it doesn't then have any effort put in to actually supporting those options. It is impossible to know quest locations from what the NPCs tell you. It is impossible to know where those locations are from what the quest log tells you. You have zero choice but to follow the yellow marker blindly and absolutely nothing else matters. I don't know why people have written walkthroughs for the game.

The story is disappointingly uninspired, delivered irritatingly poorly (probably because there isn't much to work with), and at times is simply annoying. Oh God the floods of text-only and audio-only exposition as well. Lore is one thing, but having pages of file icons to read and packing 40 minutes of clicking R3, walking, and reading near the end of the game is another. I definitely think they've used "lore" as an excuse to just shovel in lots of really boring delivery. Story is where Horizon gives the opposite of that "leading edge" impression. It works, but it's just too straight-forward and short. I would have preferred the game's entire story be the 5-minute premise of a better story, that develops new paths rather than directly dangle one question in front of you for 80% of the game, and that doesn't take forever to get to the obvious start of the plot.

What I'm really saying is that every story in a game should take lessons from Star Control 2.

Finally, the control requirements are just a bit too much for a single PS4 controller to squeeze in. This is actually not a huge downer, but just something that is often noticeable in how much it gets in the way. The controls get in the way enough to occasionally kill you, and this isn't staring at the controller fuming "I pressed it!". This is knowing 5 seconds ahead of time that you're going to die because the controls are going to step on your hands. There is simply too much one controller has to support, amplified further by the fact that battles are, more than most games, very demanding of manual camera control. Due to its positioning the camera is also not good for looking upwards; annoying when exploring, frustrating/killing when fighting birds as the grass near your knees blocks your view.

Random high points:
Spoiler!
  • Character facial modelling is next level for games, even if it's for controlled scenes. Several times I didn't notice there were choices waiting to be selected; too busy studying how well Aloy's face was done.
  • Character animation is also brilliant, and likely an unsung hero.
The way Aloy's feet handle terrain of any sort, the many cool little additions added in (like sometimes passing her spear behind her back), and just the variety in general all show a deliberate effort made so that even the animation lets you feel like you're playing a standout game. Aloy's hair alone also gives this impression.
  • Aloy herself is the next big thing in non-sexualised female leads. I hate to jump on the bandwagon here, so I'll say that I'd quite happily select any scantily-clad beat-em-up chick to play as without protest, but it is truly refreshing for a female lead in a game to not be trying to seduce the player. Aloy is a normal person, with resting frowning face, and I found this to be just another way the game felt next level, as in beyond Tomb Raider's reach. Really, it's refreshing. (There is however at least one armour set where they gave in and did sexy it up, which is kind of a shame.)
  • Combat is probably the funnest combat around in these 3rd person open world adventures. I generally avoid the genre but I still feel that can be claimed pretty confidently. Amid all the animated red hair and pretty landscapes, combat is actually Horizon's greatest strength and its selling point. Unless it's the machines. Another cool thing about the combat is that you don't actually get innately stronger over the game. You get better gear, but ultimately the first enemy you fight in the game is still an enemy you'll be fighting 40 levels later. A Stalker you take down at level 20 will still be a bit of work to deal with at level 50. So the game dodges the whole mindless 'just level up' vibe, which is a nice thing.

Combat-related cool moments, contains large spoilers:
Spoiler!
Battles are full of cool naturally playing sequences. Money shots. Some of the great ones I've seen:
  • Trampler charging for me as the sticky bomb times out and explodes, bring him down as he crashes and slides on his side right up to my feet.
  • Early fights against Watchers, running a lot. With the camera on Aloy's right there were these cool moments where I was watching/controlling Aloy running, while the Watcher is on her left, also in the camera's frame, chasing her, looking at her.
  • Similarly, running away from a Sawtooth, towards the camera this time. Watching it bound up on Aloy's left, running alongside her again, looking at her again. It's just a cool thing to watch.
  • Seeing a Shell-Walker put its shell back on. Then adjust its position.
  • Having an overridden Ravager that has beat the crap out of everything but also taken massive damage. You can tell it's taken massive damage because it is sparking. And limping. The way it was holding one paw off the ground was really cool, especially how it made you care a bit for this thing that typically kicks your arse.
  • More freakin' running away, this time I have a Charger overridden... somewhere. Running towards the camera away from whatever it was, I whistle for the Charger and he quickly comes running into view. The mounts in the game do this cool thing where they won't just run to where you whistled or even where you are; if you're still moving they'll keep moving with you. So in this occasion I'm running away, the Charger runs up beside me, continues to run, and Aloy mounts the Charger without slowing down. This was cool because I actually was trying to get away from danger as fast as possible, and this just looked sweet.
  • Fleeing a Ravager (running away is a common thing) by running along a stone balcony. Looking back, he's clearly too large a 3D model to fit inside this balcony, I'm good. Nope. It actually smashes its way into the space, stone is flying everywhere and it's briefly like some kind of wildlife horror movie. Looked really cool.
  • Thunderjaw, more running. This time I find a big rock, above Aloy's height, and I hide behind it. Whatever the Thunderjaw did, my intent was to keep this rock between me and it. Then the Thunderjaw's right foot stops right on top of the rock, so the whole machine is just looming above me. That was cool. Then it destroyed the whole rock, and with it my dreams. I feel like it crushed it with its foot (?) but I'm not 100% sure. The game has more destructible content than it gives away, and every time it catches you it's fun in a "Welp, time to go!" kind of way as you pack it. Even the smallest enemy can knock down trees and you always forget.
  • I definitely also had a brief Sarah Connor T2 moment (you know, where she has the shotgun and is facing down the T-1000). I had recently earnt the Tearblaster, and a particular fight against a Thunderjaw had just turned in my favour as I'm facing him blasting parts away, shot, reload, shot, reload, fun. I felt like King Bitch.
  • Watching a corrupted Shell-Walker knock a Watcher like 10 feet into the air.
  • Watching a Glinthawk fly away with a Lancehorn carcass I had recently killed. It literally stole my loot.
  • Literally any time I'd get to use a Ravager or Thunderjaw's gun against it. The way they did large guns in the game was a really good idea.
  • Any Strike From Above you pull off on the fly.
8.5 / 10

The core combat and presentation are 10/10s, but the story (and fairly small world on that note), spoon feeding, and control clutter drag it down.
However I'd put it above pretty much all other similar games, simply on account of not feeling so samey. It has big, fun robot fights in a pretty world, with a female lead who's actually normal, and character and enemy modelling and animation that are so good they're entertaining in their own right. If you're into the genre, get it. If you're not into the genre, still probably get it, just don't ask for a good story or quest mechanics.

Aliens vs Predator

I reinstalled this 2010 game because I’d searched for some material on Prometheus which led to some articles about Aliens which prompted Google to stick an Aliens vs Predator video in my YouTube feed from a channel called ‘Old Games in 4k’. When I bought and played the game I was running a 9600gt and the game looked and ran poorly. This video looked amazing. Installed.

I only played the marine campaign back then so I started there and had a lot of fun. This game is not critically acclaimed and while I appreciate why, there’s still a lot they did really well. It still looks fantastic. Sound is spot on. Where this game absolutely shines however is with the Predator campaign. Oh man is it fun to leap around picking marines, Aliens and androids off using thermal vision, plasma caster, smart disc, spear and/or melee. Again sound effects are perfect. The Predator campaign is where all the work went. I just wish it was longer and contained more open areas.

Alien campaign is blah. Best strategy I could come up with especially against predators was to speed in, nip at their heals, speed out. Rinse, repeat, yawn.

7 whispered ‘come over heres’ out of ten.

I agree with a lot of that Deef especially the walls of text which I stopped reading becuase it was batshit boring.

Wolfenstein II was great, kept me going for a while and a good story, the Hitler scene is fantastic. Not sure about adding on a extension thing to your character about midway like being able to shrink, go high etc didn't feel like it was necessary and the controls for my extendable legs were real touchy that frustrated me. Still a good game but no multi etc so get it cheap 8/10
