Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Just ordered me a Ryzen 5 1600. Couldn't quite afford to spring for a full fat rig, but I'm still looking forward to it.

RX Vega 56 smokes 1070 in some benches. It's one third faster in BF1 at 1440p. Be interesting to see how that $US399 ends up here.

I'm stuck with Nvidia until at least the Predator burns out - would struggle to give up Gsync.

I've just realised though, that I have a couple of spanned partitions in my computer. Hopefully they make the transfer OK... :S

Well. You get what you pay for with ASRock boards, I guess. I haven't seen such a flimsily put together piece of kit since I was a poor uni student.
On the other hand, my old FX8350 wasn't exactly slow, but this Ryzen 5 1600 is eye-wateringly fast in comparison. Plus it uses less power, which is awesome.

Yeah anything under 200 is going to be on the cheap and flimsy side with motherboards. It just depends on your use case I guess.

Vega reviewing well. I'll keep a Freesync monitor on the list after all.

It's interesting, but those power consumption figures are concerning.

GR ~ PC Hardware thread
I'd have a Vega 56 for now which is substantially less heat and power. My primary display will remain 24" for a while and it's the sweet spot for 1080p 144hz gaming.

Ryzen+ 2700X and X470 reviews are out. Some good improvements to clocks, cache and memory improvements, looks to be great for gaming now that clocks are up a bit and you can utilise faster ram. Go AMD!

Might be time to retire the old 2500k in the HTPC, pity there are no micro atx X470 boards available right now.

Anandtech's gaming benchmarks seem a bit suspect. A few commenters have called them out on it.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
What's interesting in that video is overall CPU utilisation is lower than the 8700k, meaning the extra cores/threads are sitting there idle. Most game engines are tuned for 4 threads, so plenty of untapped resources there in future. 2700k looks good if you don't plan to overclock, the 8700k has more overclock potential although that brings with it a lot of thermal issues.

Got some new keycaps for the keyboard. Just waiting now for the Mito Laser caps to arrive.

Bought Audioengine 5+ speakers yesterday. Very good sound for the money. They’re big though and won’t fit on my desk with my monitor, so I’ve placed them somewhere else.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
I don't use my logitech thx desktop speakers anymore, I find I use my headphones a lot and the built in ones in the Sony I'm using are fine for casual listening. Surround setups on PC have always been a struggle, that's why a good set of cans with headphone surround is the best option.
Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Audioengine speakers look cool but I tick along with my z623s. I managed to get a set from Officeworks for $88. These days I find myself using my Astros A50s a lot more, especially at night - didn't like them initially because they didn't play nice with Windows 8.1 but since Windows 10 rolled around they just work.

Yep. Headphones are always the preferred method for gaming, but these were bought to replace my JBL Charge 3 Bluetooth speaker to play music.
The problem with Bluetooth speakers are that the speakers are so close to each other, and you can’t get proper stereo.
These were a HUGE upgrade as you can imagine.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
So I'm shopping for a new monitor. Pros and cons with the three panel types. I'm leaning toward curved VA for the viewing angles, picture quality and contrast benefits. My only real concern is ghosting. Input lag is a thing but I don't think I'll notice a few milliseconds here or there. Are there any GR people who game on a high hz VA display?

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
VA panels even the high refresh ones still suffer with really bad black to white transitions, this creates smearing in dark areas. The degree of this depends on the model you're looking at, some are better/worse than others.
https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/lg-32gk850g/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This LG is pretty highly regarded as a high refresh VA panel.
Black smearing is very minimal at 120hz.
Here is a pic of a weaker VA panel.
https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-q3279vwf/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Personally I like using IPS panels more as a monitor, just because I sit so close those little smearing artefacts become noticeable, but in my living room or a distance away I prefer VA for the richer blacks and the smearing effects are much harder to notice sitting back a little bit.
Also factor in that a VA panel gamma shift will occur around 20 degrees, so if the screen size you're choosing is quite large you will notice colour shift on the edges, for IPS panels the colour shifts start occurring around 40-50 degrees.

Re: GR ~ PC Hardware thread
Ta mate. Samsung VA panels have been top of my list thus far. That said, despite some indifferent reviews for cheaper MSI monitors I'm finding it hard to go past this 27" VA QHD 1ms job on special for $499.
