I snapped and went and picked up a HD drive today. I couldn't be bothered waiting.
I'll get my bluray when sony gives us a price drop over here. All in good time, all in good time.
I chucked in King Kong as it comes with the player, wasn't overly impressed with the upgrade. Then I put in a standard DVD and the difference became apparent. It's not a massive leap, but it should make some films very damn watchable.

You do notice the difference going back to DVD after going to HD a lot.
Whenever I like to show the difference between HD and SD, I always put on Fast Times at Ridgement High. It may not be reference quality, but Phoebe Cates' High Definition teenage breasts seems to put the point across nicely- no idea why Actually, I'm being semi- serious- the greatest upgrade for me isn't with CGI, but skin tones and texture. Thats on the AWA @ 720p.
Mech- it's all about value you get from the movies. I got the HD-DVD add- on fairly early, and a big plus for me was the ability to attach the add- on to my PC. It meant that I would be able to use the addon after the 360 had died off, plus if region encoding came in I would be able to get around it. So in that case it was better value for me than the PS3, and it continues to be- I have 4 movies on preorder right now (300, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Heroes S1). However, Pixar is my 'killer app' for the PS3, and I'm getting tempted.

I dunno ... maybe he already had a 360 and only had to drop another $250 instead of $1000, to get a taste of the hi-def movie world?mech wrote:$850 for a noisy HD-DVD player = good deal, $1000 for a PS3 + 2 games + 2 controllers = rip off?

To be honest I am running it on my AWA, so the best image I am going to get is 720p.
I'll look at upgrading my tv in the future, but given that my current tv is only just over a year old I'm not going to go rushing out to buy another one.
I just watched Tokyo Drift, and thought some scenes were just hella impressive. I have to admit the clarity of skin and cloth is just amazing. Also it is enjoyable to watch a film without the screen blur of the cinema.
300 here I come!

here is a quote from a 300 hd dvd review:
blu ray review http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/300.html
CGI action porn.....grouse.
hd dvd review http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/300.htmlbut as far as CGI action-porn goes, it just doesn't get any better than this.
It also doesn't get much better than this HD DVD. The video is solid, the audio is simply kick ass, and there are so many extras (both standard and exclusive) that this one truly earns the label "cutting edge." If only to see what the HD DVD format is capable of, '300' is a must-buy.

Target will still be selling hd dvd movies, they even still sell the 360 addon!mech wrote:Yeah, if we had a price drop + 5 free HD-DVDs, dead format or not I'd grab one
Target in the US just dropped HD-DVD to focus exclusively on Blu-Ray. The tide really is turning.

Amazon. Currently $70US, and I get a further 10% off whatever it ends up to be. With the value of the dollar at the moment, it won't be too far off the RRP of the AUS SD version.GreyWizzard wrote:amba, where did you pre-order heroes season 1 from and how much?
