I learnt this the hard way - manual is NOT how you should use your iPhone. It's like they threw it in there as an afterthought. It's how I used my iPod and it was mostly fine, but really, for iPhone, you need to have it automatically sync.

So my iphone is a work phone and is setup on my work lappy to do all the syncing etc except for music which I have set to manual.
I have then installed the app Shaneus mentioned (the name escapes me) on my home desktop PC which I use to manually manage my music library.
This seems to work well as I don't leave my music open to iphone rape and also don't need to have questionable and large amount of source files all over my work lappy. I also get the benefit of getting a full iphone backup for everything else when syncing the work lappy.
** I assume! Correct me if I'm heaps wrong though.

I have it sync to a playlist, so you just edit the playlist and then plug in your phone, almost the best of both worlds. almost.

iPhone rape on your music?
I just use "only sync checked songs" or whatever, and then do "sync all". works a treat, syncs all my playlists, etc, and whenever I have to do a restore it's not a hassle at all. If I want to remove or add a song I just click the tickbox next to it. I really recommend this for iPhones...

You want to make sure album art is in place otherwise Coverflow is going to look shit. It all just looks better with all the album art.

Yeah I'm using Mediamonkey (unless someone knows of a better app) to fix my tags and get cover art for all my broken shit.

Media Monkey any good? I need to sort out my music, it's getting a bit messy
and yeah I just have an iPhone playlist that I edit to my tastes. Anything I miss I can just stream with Orb.

Few questions:
When in sleep mode does it still use the wifi or should I switch it off? Can I download apps from other countries to my phone. Does Apple send you a bill of what you have bought or is it just the email only?

leave wifi on, but hae it set to check email once an hour (or whatever, not regularly or you'll eat battery)
other countries, no idea, but most things are available here anyway (or there might be a slight time delay?)
and email reciepts only, thank god

This sygic software is dodgy as.At times when you drive it shows you driving off the road and sometimes it lags a lot ie, the arrow wont even move.

So Media Monkey whipped my tags and covers into pretty damn good shape. Still quite a manual process eg import your whole library then select one album at a time and get info/cover but for my fucking disaster of a collection it worked well
Oh and running itunes on my Lappy and that other manual app on my PC can GGF!! I'm running itunes exclusively on my PC now and syncing any work shit over the air.

I've used my mrs's several times and it's never behaved as you say (no lag or random arrow action). Maybe a QC issue with your iPhone? I've used Sygic and the iPhone with the iphone sitting in the centre console (between the front seats) and it has been fine.

I have sync music checked along with entire music library and include music videos and voice memos are ticked. When I restored my phone it didn't include my music even though I have it backed up.wtf.My songs are still in itunes but when I click to play them it says music cannot be found etc.I thought it would have backed them all up. Hmm.

iTunes backups don't hold your music. Why would you have gigs of music in a library then have that same music sitting again in an iPhone backup? Not to mention a backup of an iPhone full to the brim with music. It would take hours to backup 32GB of info from an iPhone.
Just sync your music back to the phone from the original library.

Quick question - can the ipod touch play the same games as Iphone? Are they pretty much the same thing other than memory sizes and phone function? I ask because I might grab one for Nicole and I to play with but neither of us need the actual phone.
