I drove from france through most of spain with my iphone gps, and it's pretty crap. Don't expect much from it. I went to a city called sans sebastion that has express ways on top of express ways, and it kept getting lost and not telling us the right turn off's. We went round and round in circles getting lost.

It works, but it usually takes a while to lock onto where you are if your around cliff's or cities, and even then can get lost for up to 5mins. With bad weather it also gets worse, so basically just be patient, and no it won't follow you and tell you where to turn cause apple know its so crap that if they tried, it would tell you go to go all over the shop as it keeps loosing its location.

Essentially don't expect much, don't expect it to work where your altitude is changing a lot and there is hillsides/cities. Best bet is to follow the Navigation instructions, and use the locator to get a rough idea of where you are, depend on the blue dot and you will get lost.

I finally gave Sygic a crack this morning on the way to work. Didn't have it mounted in any way shape or form - just sitting on the passenger seat. It was pretty accurate, though at times it did seem to lag a little behind where I was or took a while to figure out that I had gone a different way to their route. That was with the phone in landscape. When I switched to portrait it didn't lag, but sometimes still took a little while to pickup when I had gone a different way - like it was expecting me to go the way it was recommending, and then when I didn't it took a couple of seconds to readjust (not just readjust the route - but also where I actually was).

I think any GPS would struggle in that sort of situation.

In what might be good news for iphone data users, 3 and vodafone have finally merged their 3g networks, increasing coverage substantially (my morning train commute had virtually no 3g dead spots) and the great thing for 3 customers is now you fall back to vodafones/3s gsm network instead of telstra, so now you don't get punished on data transfer if you fall outside of 3g. Seems like telstra though is still available as a last resort roaming option if you fall outside a vodafone gsm area.

so where's best to go for the next iphone you reckon? it still looks like optus is the best value for your dollar, maybe not the best network though, really.

Anyone played it? I'm kind of interested in how good or bad it is.

Optus has terrible coverage and speed, my brother constantly has issues with his iPhone. Didn't Pepp have problems with Optus too?

If Voda could get close the quality and speed of the Next G network I'd switch in a heartbeat.

re: Chinatown Wars, a guy at work bought it and it looks pretty smooth. Not sure if it's worth $13 but it's nice to look at.

Optus is shit but so cheap. I get about 13+ hours of calls a month, unlimited sms + mms, and 1gb of data for $79. That's awesome value. Also if you've got reception it's usually pretty good, I easily get 300-400k/s on my iPhone when downloading from the iTunes store, and use Optus for my mobile broadband where it runs like a champ (so the iPhone is partially to blame).

Also I would happily pay 50% more for better coverage, but not the 400% that Telstra wants.

that's the problem, there's no inbetween. Telstra's data pricing is almost criminal.

I grabbed it, haven't played other versions so can't compare.
it's smooth, feels pretty good.
touch controls aren't the best like in most games, but it's still very playable.

Ahem...

May I present to you Firefox for Mameo RC3 with Flas...

We’ve decided to disable plugin (not to be confused with add-ons, which are supported) support for this release. The Adobe Flash plugin used on many sites degraded the performance of the browser to the point where it didn’t meet our standards. If you wish to enable our experimental plugin support, you will be able to manually via about:config, but do so at your own risk. We are working on an add-on that will allow the user to have control of which sites to enable plugins for, as some sites, like YouTube, do work quite well.

OH I SEE WHAT U DID THAR TALES!!!!

If history is any guide, June/July. I expect a repeat of last year where the phone was announced at WWDC and shipping "now" (which usually means 5 units today and the rest in 2 weeks).

I'll probably take the next day off work and stay up to watch the announcement and get my pre-order in. I'm not going to be recontracting. I'll buy the next one outright and sell my 3GS for $500 to the first sap that wants it like my 3G.

I wonder how much I could get for my 3G. So is it actually going to be worth it to upgrade? I'm not expecting anything but more grunt possibly.

Is any more grunt actually needed? I don't come up against anything that causes me any issues during my regular usage.

I'd be thinking along the lines of a front facing camera for video calls, higher resolution screen, and maybe a screen that's better in bright conditions. Better battery as well maybe, and possibly a slimmer design. I don't see any of these as reasons to upgrade, though if you're going to do it you might as well do it early as previous models hold their value well. Even still spending an extra $500 or so for a minor list of updates like that doesn't make sense to me.

Yeah I hear ya man. Unless the next IPhone is a amazing with something new, I'm not upgrading for the sake of it. I'll switch to android and enjoy more of an open OS.

Multitasking in 4.0 will need more grunt if only to keep the CPU idle for longer.

Yeah. I'm expecting an iPhone with front facing camera with an "iChat" style app. Apple do some amazing things with iChat AV and H.264. Hopefully they can bypass the 3G-324M standard and start up the H.264 based video calling revolution. It might actually be useful instead of a garbled mess.

What true benefit will unlocked multi-tasking bring?

I mean currently you can listen to music while browsing the web with mail being received in the background.

Am I being silly or would anything over than this not really add much to the functionality except that the extra processing power would likely have a greater power pull (certainly under a higher load) reducing the already low battery life?

With apps like WhatsApp already capable of easily sending video with no cost associated (other than data usage) the importance of video calls has decreased IMO. How often is it that you're making a call when you're not doing something else at the same time? Certainly it would be a handy feature to have but not for the cost of an upgrade for existing 3GS owners. Storage wise the likely increase to 64 GB may be handy for some, but I've not yet run into any issues with a lowly 16 GB model. Mind you I'm hardly a music aficionado so I don't have a great deal of it on there. Podcast wise I'm running at 120+. Video wise I've only chucked a couple of films on therem I guess I'll load it up with other content when travelling.
